The Cleveland Browns find another way to come up short again Oct 10, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of The Locked On Browns Podcast gives the Browns vs. Chargers Recap | Instant Reaction. A late pick by Jacoby Brissett and 2 Cade York missed field goals result in Browns’ 30-28 to Chargers as they fall to 2-3. Cade York wasn’t able to come through with the miracle, game-saving field goal this time like he did in Carolina.

York pushed a 54-yard field goal wide right with 11 seconds left to seal the Chargers’ 30-28 victory over the Browns on Sunday at FirstEnergy Stadium. Earlier, York pushed a 45-yarder wide right, also at the closed end of the stadium. He made a 58-yarder in Carolina to win the opener. Fans booed as the Browns left the field. It dropped the Browns to 2-3 and marked their second straight loss. The Chargers are 3-2.

The game marked the return of Browns defensive end Myles Garrett after he missed last week’s 23-20 loss to the Falcons after his car accident. Garrett, needing one sack to break Clay Matthews’ official club record of 62, was shut out on sacks but pressured Chargers quarterback Justin Gilbert all afternoon. It also marked the return of Jadeveon Clowney, who missed the past two games with an ankle injury.

The Chargers came into the game last in the NFL in yards per carry at 2.7. But against the Browns, they ran 34 times for 238 yards and two touchdowns, an average of 7.0 per carry. The total included a 71-yarder in the first quarter by Austin Ekeler, who finished with 16 carries for 173 yards.

The Cleveland Browns Will Need To Play More Aggressive On Defense To Beat Chargers Oct 07, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of The Locked On Browns Podcast Preview The NFL Week 5 matchup between the Cleveland Browns vs. The L.A. Chargers. They give are preview the Browns vs Chargers. In NFL Week 5 the Browns Face A Huge Challenge From Herbert And The Chargers. Garrett Bush and John Kosko believe The Cleveland Browns Will Need To Play Aggressive Defensively To Beat The Chargers

The LA Chargers are on the road for the second consecutive week as they take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 5. This is a rematch from last season's instant classic, which also took place in Week 5. Things are very different this year, though, with Jacoby Brissett at quarterback for Cleveland and a new-look defense for the Chargers. The Bolts are looking to pick up any sort of momentum that will move them to 3-2 on the season. LA is in the "easy" part of the schedule and despite all of the struggles that the team has dealt with, it is important that they rack up the wins now. Cleveland, meanwhile, is a talented team without a quarterback that has dropped two ugly games to the New York Jets and Atlanta Falcons. Despite those results, Browns fans might feel confident against the Chargers, who have looked sluggish this season. Browns fans should not be confident in this matchup, though. In fact, there is one thing that should be terrifying Browns fans in this matchup. It is a very simple answer, but when you really break it down, it becomes clear that Cleveland has not had to test itself in the way that it will test itself in Week 5.

Obviously, Justin Herbert is going to be on the top of the list of things to worry about for opposing teams every single week. He is one of the best quarterbacks in the entire sport and that is a cause for concern in any matchup. However, this is particularly concerning for the Browns considering who they have played thus far this season. Cleveland is 2-2 on the year and has played a collection of fairly bad quarterbacks that are still scoring points against them. As it stands right now, Cleveland has allowed 23.8 points per game, which is 19th in the league. That might not be horrible but look at who the team has played. In four weeks the Browns have played Baker Mayfield and the Carolina Panthers, Joe Flacco and the New York Jets, Mitch Trubisky and the Pittsburgh Steelers and Marcus Mariota and the Atlanta Falcons.

Two of those guys are not even starting for their respective teams anymore and we are only in Week 5! The other two are two of the five worst quarterbacks in the league. If those quarterbacks can have moderate success against this Browns defense then what is Justin Herbert going to be able to do? We have seen how smooth this offense operates when it is right as the team dropped 34 points on the Houston Texans last week. Despite being winless, the Houston defense was actually playing well up until that point, allowing 19.7 points per game in the first three weeks. With these matchups in mind and the results of those matchups, it feels like a sure-fire thing that Justin Herbert and the Chargers offense will score 30 or more points in this game. And if so, the Browns simply won't be able to keep like last year.

NFL Week 5 | Browns Face A Huge Challenge From Herbert And The Chargers Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of The Locked On Browns Podcast are preview the Browns vs Chargers. NFL Week 5 | Browns Face A Huge Challenge From Herbert And The Chargers. After a tough loss on the road, the Cleveland Browns head home to take on the Los Angeles Chargers, who are led by Justin Herbert Everyone is ready to put Week 4 behind us and move on to the Los Angeles Chargers. That’s who will be heading to Northeast Ohio to take on the Cleveland Browns in Week 4. It’s a battle of 2-2 teams but they come in with different stories.

After losing by three to the Chiefs in Week 2, the Chargers seemed uninterested in Week 3 and lost 38-10 to the Jaguars. They came back out ready to remind everyone how strong their offense is as they beat Houston 34-24 to improve to 2-2. Cleveland has gone back and forth with their wins and losses, taking out the Panthers and Steelers in Weeks 1 and 3 and losing to the Jets and Falcons in Weeks 2 and 4. They’ll try and keep that routine going, but it won’t be easy as they take on a great passing attack led by Justin Herbert.

Browns vs. Chargers Odds Week 5

Cleveland is an underdog in this one but it says a lot about the talent on this team that it’s just a three-point spread as of Monday. The Chargers are a potent passing attack and given the Browns issues in the secondary, L.A. seems as though they should be favored more. The moneyline stands at +16 for Cleveland while Los Angeles is sitting at -184. As of now, the over/under is at 47.5.

Browns vs. Chargers Prediction Week 5

Cleveland lost in Week 4 despite Marcus Mariota completing just seven passes. Herbert can complete seven passes in one drive. He’s already thrown for 1,250 yards and nine touchdowns and with the Browns penchant for leaving people open, he’s going to add to those numbers in a big way. Last season, he led them to 26 points in the final quarter against Cleveland and that was with Baker Mayfield throwing for 305 yards and two touchdowns. It’s not likely Jacoby Brissett has a day and Herbert could repeat his 398-yard, four-touchdown performance — especially if the defensive line is still hurting. If so, he will have all day to throw and this could get ugly.

    Prediction: Chargers 34, Browns 20

Shocking PFF Grades: Cleveland Browns Lose To Atlanta Falcons Oct 03, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of the Locked on Browns Podcast were joined by John Kosko of Pro Football Focus. Kosko gave his grades for the Cleveland Browns vs. Atlanta Falcons Week 4 matchup. Find Out The Week 4 Pro Football Focus Grades For The Cleveland Browns.

After their week of adversity and losing their star defensive player in Myles Garrett after his accident, the Browns lost 23-20 to the Falcons on Sunday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium to drop to 2-2. The outcome was decided on Jacoby Brissett’s interception with 55 seconds left when the Browns were trying to get Cade York in position for the game-tying field goal.

The Browns had another blown coverage late in the game when receiver Olamide Zaccheaus caught a 43-yard pass from Marcus Mariota. Denzel Ward grabbed Zaccheaus’ facemask making the tackle to tack on another 15 yards to the Browns’ 33. Younghoe Koo kicked a 45-yard field goal with 2:28 left to put Atlanta up 23-20. Brissett took over at his 25 with no timeouts left and the drive was a disaster. It began with a short pass into the turf and then back-to-back completions of 20 to David Bell and 6 to Donovan Peoples-Jones.

Guard Joel Bitonio was flagged for ineligible man downfield to take the Browns out of field goal range. Brissett was sacked by Grady Jarrett on third down and then threw the interception on a pass to Bell. The Browns had plenty of adversity to overcome during the week with star defensive end Myles Garrett flipping his Porsche 911 Turbo S multiple times on Monday and suffering multiple minor injuries, including a sprained shoulder, strained biceps and cut wrist. Garrett didn’t practice all week and his status was uncertain. Ultimately, he was ruled out on Saturday and stayed home to rest his wounds.

In fact, the Browns headed into the game minus three of their four starting defensive linemen in Garrett (shoulder, biceps), Jadeveon Clowney (ankle) and Taven Bryan (hamstring). They were replaced by rookie Alex Wright, recent practice-squader Isaac Rochell and second-year pro Tommy Togiai. The Browns were also without middle linebacker Anthony Walker Jr., who’s out for the season with a torn quadriceps tendon. He was replaced by Jacob Phillips, who wore the green helmet sticker and called the defense signals.

The pick followed two straight three-and-outs by the Browns offense. But the Falcons gave the Browns a taste of their own medicine on their next drive. The ran 10 straight times — all with lead back Cordarelle Patterson on the sidelines presumably nursing his sore knee — to take a 17-13 left with 12:51 left on Caleb Huntley’s 5-yard TD run. Huntley ran eight times on the drive. But the Browns’ running game came alive too, with Kareem Hunt rumbling for 20 yards and then Nick Chubb blasting up the left side for a 28-yard TD to make it 20-17 with 9:51 left. “... I’m always trying to do what’s best for the team. There’s always opportunities to get better as a player and a coach. ... Browns vs. Falcons Preview | Browns Legend D'Qwell Jackson Gives Keys To Victory Sep 30, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of The Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of The Locked On Browns Podcast are joined by Browns Legend D'Qwell Jackson. The Browns former captain Gives Keys To Victory in the Browns vs. Falcons preview. Falcons coach Arthur Smith knows what to expect from a Cleveland Browns offense that revolves around Nick Chubb's powerful runs. ''They're coming to mash you,'' Smith said. Smith wants Atlanta's rushing attack led by Cordarrelle Patterson to mash back. Chubb, the NFL's leading rusher, and Patterson, who ranks third, will be in the spotlight in what Smith expects to be a ''heavyweight fight'' of running games on Sunday. This will be Chubb's first NFL game played in his home state. The Cedartown native previously played at Mercedes-Benz Stadium during his college career at Georgia. Chubb says Cleveland's run-first offense wears down defenses. ''Things start to open up,'' Chubb said. ''I can't really see them getting tired, but at the end of the game things do start opening up a lot easier.''

Browns quarterback Jacoby Brissett says the Browns' running game is no secret. 'I mean, yeah, teams know we're going to run the ball and we still run the ball,'' Brissett said. The Browns (2-1) and Falcons (1-2) are the league's only teams to score at least 26 points in every game. 'Everybody sees the tape; it's going to be a really physical game on Sunday,'' Smith said. ''They're going to try to run Nick Chubb 500 times and we got to stop him, and we're going to try to run the ball and play our game, too.'' Brissett has disproved doubters who believed the Browns couldn't win until quarterback Deshaun Watson returns in December from his 11-game suspension for alleged sexual misconduct. Brissett threw two touchdown passes in Cleveland's 29-17 win over Pittsburgh on Sept. 22. Patterson, formerly a wide receiver and return specialist, has set career rushing highs in two of Atlanta's first three games, including his 141 yards in last week's 27-23 win at Seattle. The Browns may be without All-Pro defensive end Myles Garrett, who suffered a sprained shoulder, strained biceps, cuts and bruises when he flipped his Porsche in a one-car crash on Monday.

    MORE THAN A RECEIVER

Second-year Atlanta tight end Kyle Pitts made fantasy players happy when he had five catches for 87 yards last week. Pitts had only four catches for 38 yards in the first two games. Smith said the tight end's value is based on more than his catches, pointing to his contributions in the running game. 'He's really becoming a complete player,'' Smith said.

    OFFENSIVE ROLL

Watson will claim the starting job when he returns in December. Brissett is making a case he should be starting for some team, if not Cleveland. The 29-year-old Brissett has exceeded expectations, leading the Browns to a pair of wins while completing 74% (43 of 58) of his passes in the past two games. Brissett has developed chemistry with wide receiver Amari Cooper and he's spreading the ball around to make all of Cleveland's playmakers happy. Brissett believes the Browns' offense can be even better. ''The reasons why we haven't scored on every drive has been us,'' he said. ''It's been things that we haven't (done) and we're still trying to correct.''

    BUSTED-UP BROWNS

In addition to Garrett, the Browns had four other defensive starters miss practice this week. End Jadeveon Clowney (ankle), cornerback Denzel Ward (ribs, back), linebacker Jeremiah Owusu-Koramoah (groin) and tackle Taven Bryan (hamstring) were also sidelined. Browns linebacker and captain Anthony Walker Jr. suffered a season-ending quadriceps injury against Pittsburgh. With Garrett and Clowney hurting, the Browns may need to rely on some rookies, including end Alex Wright.

Browns vs. Falcons Preview | Can The Browns Win Without Myles Garrett On The Road? Sep 29, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of the Locked On Browns Podcast joined Locked On Falcons Podcast Host Aaron Freeman for the discuss the Browns vs. Falcons Preview | Can The Browns Win Without Myles Garrett On The Road? This NFL Week 4 cross-conference matchup has plenty of sports betting potential as the AFC North ruling Cleveland Browns face off against the NFC South’s Atlanta Falcons, two teams with impressive rushing attacks led by quarterbacks looking to find their next football franchise. The 2-1 Cleveland Browns should be undefeated were it not for a serious miscommunication in their Week 2 defense against the NY Jets, but still they sit atop the AFC North as their temporary QB Jacoby Brissett rocks and their two star RBs Nick, Chubb and Kareem Hunt, roll. Last week, the Atlanta Falcons won their first game of the season thanks to great production from dual threat RB Cordarrelle Patterson (18 touches, 153 total yds, TD) helping his QB Marcus Mariota during his NFL rebirth along with TE Kyle Pitts and rookie WR Drake London.

Cleveland Browns vs Atlanta Falcons Predictions

Can the Falcons Defense Handle the Browns’ Offensive Weapons?

Atlanta Falcons DC Dean Pees will have his hands full game planning against this multi-talented Cleveland Browns offense that can hurt you with deep threat receiver Cooper, field slashing TE Njoku, or the two-headed backfield rushing monster nicknamed CHUNT, RBs Chubb and Hunt. Collectively, they are all a problem for the Falcons to consider, their defensive front line also about to get hammered by one of the top NFL lines featuring All-Pro guard Joel Bitonio, so DE Ta’Quon Graham and his D-line have to hope that their secondary can hold their coverage. The Falcons defense is ranked 20th in the league, allowing teams to score 27 points and gain over 380 total yards per game, a squad that will have to multi-task on Sunday as they defend against the Browns’ top-5 multi-functional offensive attack that hits hard from everywhere.

Browns Key Player: (DE) Myles Garrett

All eyes are on Browns star DE Myles Garrett who was in an automobile accident earlier this week that totaled his Porsche but left him with no life-threatening injuries after he swerved to avoid hitting an animal, so right now he is listed as questionable to play on Sunday. Assuming Garrett does suit up in Atlanta, what he brings to the defense is a bone-crushing attack at the line where he runs circles around offensive tackles and guards as his body stays horizontal to the turf and his long arms take QBs down, so far with 3 sacks on the season.Garrett only needs one more sack to become the Browns franchise sack leader and, with Falcons QB Mariota having already been sacked 6 times this season (three times in each of the last two games), it’s highly likely that Myles will earn that all-time Browns distinction on Sunday.

Falcons Key Player: (QB) Marcus Mariota

After the Atlanta Falcons moved on from longtime franchise QB Matt Ryan (Indy Colts) in the offseason, backup Marcus Mariota was named starter under center, a veteran team leader who started in league as a Tennessee Titan who is no doubt thrilled to have another shot at a team. This is Mariota’s 8th NFL season and the former Oregon star and Heisman Trophy winner will turn 29 right before Halloween this year, a 6’ 4” 222-pound scrambler from Hawaii already with impressive career stats – 80 TDs for 14,077 yards and 48 INTs completing 63% of his passes. Mariota can also hurt you with his legs having posted 1,666 rushing yards and 15 TDs over his eight pro seasons, so watch for him to run when he is not handing or throwing the ball to dual-threat RB Cordarrelle Patterson or hitting TE Kyle Pitts for the checkdown YAC opportunity.

Cleveland Browns Defense Will Be Without Key Players vs. Falcons Sep 28, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of the Locked On Browns Podcast discuss the number of injuries the team has sustained during the first 3 weeks of the season. The Browns Defense Will Be Without Key Players vs. Falcons. The Cleveland Browns brought back Curtis Weaver to the practice squad in reaction to Myles Garrett possibly not playing Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons. Garrett is still recovering from a scary care crash that left his with minor injuries to his should and bicep. After a week where the Cleveland Browns signed two players off of their practice squad in Jordan Kunaszyk and Isaac Rochell, a few positions opened up. Today, they welcomed in a familiar face in bringing back pass rusher Curtis Weaver. The Browns signed him to the practice squad. Additionally, they added Jermaine Carter to the practice squad as well.

Despite having 10 days off between games, the Cleveland Browns are the walking wounded going into Wednesday’s practice. DE Myles Garrett’s car accident didn’t lead to any serious injuries for the team’s star but his status for Sunday is still up in the air. Unfortunately for the team, Garrett’s injury isn’t the only one of concern with a majority coming on the defensive side of the ball that has struggled. Garrett is not with the team Wednesday but is expected to return to the team Thursday according to HC Kevin Stefanski. Going into Wednesday’s practice, six starters, including Garrett, will not participate.

Bitonio has been resting his bicep injury in practices throughout the early part of the season but still has played at a high level on game days.

The Atlanta Falcons have some young weapons in WR Drake London and TE Kyle Pitts while versatile RB/WR/KR Cordarrelle Patterson is third in the league in rushing through three weeks With LB Anthony Walker Jr. out for the season, Owusu-Koramoah is expected to shoulder even more of the load in the middle of the defense. With three of the four starting defensive linemen also missing practice, DC Joe Woods could have a lot of adjustments to make. The first official injury report for Week 4 will come out later on Wednesday. We will share that with you here. As of today, Stefanski is not ruling any of the players out for the game against the Falcons.

Myles Garrett Update | Will The Browns Star Defensive End Be Available Against Falcons? Sep 27, 2022
    Show notes

Garrett Bush of the Ultimate Cleveland Sports Show and Jeff Lloyd of the Locked On Browns Podcast give the latest update on Browns Defensive End Myles Garrett. Will The Browns Star Defensive End Be Available Against Falcons?

Cleveland Browns star defensive end Myles Garrett was involved in a single-car crash after leaving practice on Monday. Garrett suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital, the Browns confirmed to Fox News Digital. The team said it was in the process of gathering more information.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol told Fox News Digital that it’s currently investigating the single vehicle, rollover, injury crash in Sharon Township. Troopers were sent to the scene near State Road and Ridgewood Road where they found Garrett's gray 2021 Porsche Turbo S off the right side of the road with rollover damage. A female passenger was also in the car and taken with Garrett to the hospital with non-life-threatening injuries as well. Both passengers had seatbelts on at the time of the crash.

There was no impairment from drugs or alcohol suspected in the crash, police said. The status of Garrett for next week’s game against the Atlanta Falcons is uncertain at this time, but his agent, Nicole Lynn, released a statement saying that he is "alert and responsive." He is also expected to be released from the hospital Monday night, per ESPN. Garrett, 27, is a key piece on the Browns’ defensive line as the team captain already has three sacks on the season. He collected two against the Carolina Panthers in Week 1 and another in the loss to the New York Jets in Week 2.

In Week 3, Garrett had two combined tackles and one quarterback hit in the win over the Pittsburgh Steelers, 29-17. The three-time Pro Bowler and two-time All-Pro edge rusher is in his sixth season with Cleveland, who took him with the first overall pick of the 2017 NFL Draft. Garrett has 61. 5 career sacks dating back to his seven in 11 games during his rookie campaign. Since then, he’s totaled at least 10 sacks in each of the last four seasons. Garrett is currently playing on his five-year extension he received in July 2020, with $100 million of the $125 million fully guaranteed.
