EPISODE 240 - Jane Rosen - From Screenplays, Bill Murray and Rod Stewart Interactions to Becoming an Author in New York
    About Jane
Jane L. Rosen is an author and Huffington Post contributor. She lives in New York City and Fire Island with her husband and three daughters. Her first novel Nine Women, One Dress was translated into ten languages. Her second novel Eliza Starts a Rumor has been optioned by NBC. Her latest novel, On Fire Island, is out now!
Book: On Fire Island - "Dazzling...as funny as it is poignant, nostalgic as it is sharp." —Carley Fortune, New York Times bestselling author of Every Summer After
A book editor spends one last summer on Fire Island in this sparkling and surprising new novel from the author of A Shoe Story.
As a book editor, Julia Morse lived and breathed stories. Whether with her pen to a manuscript or curled up with a book while at her beloved Fire Island cottage, her imagination alight with a good tale, she could anticipate practically any ending. The ending she’d never imagined was her own.
To be fair, no one expects to die at thirty-seven. So when the unthinkable happens to Julia, rather than following the light at the end of the proverbial tunnel, she chooses to spend one last summer near those she loves most.
As she follows her adoring, novelist husband Ben to their—unexpectedly full—home on Fire Island, she discovers the ripple affect her life has had on the trajectory of so many: her baseball loving, young-at-heart neighbor who believes it’s best not to go it alone, two bright-eyed teenagers eager to become adults, and her best friend who must shake off heartbreak for a new chance at love.
With poignant comedy and insight, On Fire Island is an ode to the stories all around us and to the brightest types of loves…for the people closest to you and the places that shape you.

    E236 - Susan Salenger - SIDELINED - How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health Aug 29, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 236 - Susan Salenger - SIDELINED - How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health
DON'T MAKE ANOTHER HEALTHCARE DECISION WITHOUT READING THIS BOOK
"If men had cramps, they'd have cured this by now..."
"I told my doctors about my pain for years, but they told me it was all in my head..."
"My doctor removed my IUD without anesthesia because 'there aren't any nerve endings in there.' Boy, was he wrong!"
These and countless other comments from women who've suffered at the hands of the healthcare industry are frighteningly common... but they don't have to be.
Sidelined: How Women Manage & Mismanage Their Health discloses how women have been marginalized and hesitate to take control over their own healthcare. But what's behind this nationwide medical crisis? Too often, women downplay or ignore their symptoms to avoid being "difficult," often blaming themselves for serious illness.
The end result could be inferior care, which can lead to serious consequences.
In Sidelined, writer and researcher Susan Salenger explains why women are misdiagnosed more often than men, and why their symptoms often go unrecognized or even disputed. This book teaches readers how to take charge of their health, make informed decisions, and leave their appointments with answers instead of just questions.
Knowing how to advocate for your own healthcare can mean the difference between healthy outcomes and years of needless agony, or even death.
This important women's health book equips readers with the knowledge, language, and skill sets they need to overcome the gender bias that is present in the medical industry and get the best healthcare possible.
    About the Author
Susan Salenger was born and raised in Los Angeles, and for more than twenty-five years owned Salenger Films, which produced corporate training and development films and distributed them around the world, with her husband. Sue wrote the scripts and the workbooks that accompanied the films. Once her children had grown up and she had some time for herself, Sue took some anthropology classes at UCLA. Her final project for one of those classes was a study of women who had undergone hysterectomies; that study was the catalyst for this book.
Sue’s wonderful husband has passed away, but she has two fabulous daughters and four incredible grandchildren. They all live in Petaluma, California, and see each other often.

    Show notes

E233 - Janie Paul - Finding Humanity in Art - Making Art in Prison - Survival and Resistance

Making Art In Prison: Survival And Resistance
The United States is the most incarcerating nation in the world. Over two million people are locked behind bars, where they endure the degradation and violence of a dehumanizing system. But in prisons around the country, incarcerated people have regained their dignity by creating objects of beauty, meaning, and value.
In Making Art in Prison: Survival and Resistance, Janie Paul introduces readers to the culture and aesthetics of prison art communities, and shares heart wrenching, poignant, and often surprisingly humorous artists’ narratives. These powerful stories and images upend the manufactured stereotypes of those living in prison, imparting a real human dimension—a critical step in the movement to end mass incarceration.
For 27 years, Paul has traveled throughout Michigan to meet artists and select work for the project she co-founded: The Annual Exhibitions of Artists in Michigan Prisons, an initiative of the Prison Creative Arts Project at the University of Michigan. Pedagogical as well as curatorial, the project has provided crucial validation for the artists. Making Art in Prison features over 200 images of their extraordinary work.
Delving deeply into the ways in which incarcerated artists create meaning through their artistic practice, Paul explains how the making, sharing, and formation of artistic friendships within prisons can constitute acts of resistance against the violence and banality of prison life. Most of the artists did not make art before coming to prison. Their accomplishments show that art making need not be a privilege of the few, but is rather a basic human need, and in these circumstances, a necessary means of survival.
Making Art in Prison reveals—through the eyes of the artists who have lived through it—what mass incarceration looks and feels like in the United States. It reveals the ways in which they keep their humanity intact; it invites us to reflect on our own humanity and the problem of living in a country that incarcerates more of its population than any other nation in the world. It also invites us to look closely at the images and appreciate the richness of life and luminosity emerging from the darkest corner of our country.

E231 - Janet Hurley - Glove Shy, the story of Brian and his Fighting Career Inside and Outside the Ring

    Glove Shy: A Sister's Reckoning

The heartbeat of family life is the thump of fists on a heavy bag.
In the 1970s, Janet Hurley’s older brother, Brian, was the teenage protégé of a World Heavyweight Champion who lived in their hometown. Brian was a young man of brilliance and wit. His talents were broad, yet boxing was the path he chose. And, soon enough, family life revolved around his training, his bouts, his future: Olympic medals? A pro career?
Glove Shy is a tender-tough memoir, a loving look at how a sport as elemental as boxing can obscure the powerful forces this family never saw coming. But, when one of your own is in the ring, slugging, being slugged, what else can matter?
Glove Shy is a well-told story of what happens when the blows hit far beyond the ropes. Hurley is a talented writer, with strong and vivid prose. She is also brave, willing to get in the ring with her own past.
    About the Author

Janet Hurley was born and raised in the Hudson Valley of upstate New York before heading south to Carolina (the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill) for its undergraduate creative writing program. She has lived in the south ever since, most recently in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Western NC, where she and her husband David raised their daughter, Maren, and son, Liam.

After receiving an MFA in Creative Non-fiction from Lesley University in Cambridge, MA, in 2008, Janet published feature stories and profiles for North Carolina-based magazines, Our State and VERVE. She also ran a small business, True Ink, which provided creative opportunities for young writers. In 2011, she co-founded Asheville Writers in the Schools and Community (AWITSC), a non-profit committed to racial equity and social change through the power of arts, culture and restorative self-expression. And, from 2013-2016, she taught creative non-fiction and writing for the media as an adjunct in the undergraduate writing program at Warren Wilson College. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic forced many transitions, including, fortunately, a re-focus on her own writing.

Glove Shy: A Sister’s Reckoning is Janet’s first book-length publication. She lives in Asheville, NC with her husband David and their dog, Wilson.

Dave Bahr is an author, speaker, and comedian focused on demystifying the public’s perception of how to interact with people with disabilities. As the founder of In-Sightful Living, Dave works as an accessibility consultant, aiding organizations to enhance their systems, environments, events, and cultures to be supportive of people with disabilities.
