    Show notes

E219 - Jo-Ann Oosterman - The Story of Tom - The Homeless Man of Many Pockets and His Art
The Book: Tom’s Story: My 16 Year Friendship with a Homeless
Tom’s Story is about the author’s friendship with Tom Hogan, a First Nations man who was perpetually homeless, a self-described chronic alcoholic, and a person who had episodes of psychosis. He was also a great storyteller and a gifted Woodland style artist.
Jo-Ann first met Tom in 1998 when she volunteered to co-ordinate an art group for people who were homeless. She was an outreach worker and an HIV counsellor at the time. During the sixteen years of their friendship, she spent countless weekend and evening hours sitting on sidewalks beside Tom, listening and observing, then heading home to write it all down.
With Tom’s permission, she wrote about the hard realities of his life – a traumatic childhood, sleeping in bug-infested shelters, or panhandling in the sub-zero weather for just one more bottle. She became Tom’s ally when he entered and left recovery programs, or simply searched for a safe place to live. Sometimes she helped; sometimes she got in the way. Other times, she tried to walk away, but she was always compelled to seek him out again to follow his story.
Tom’s Story is a unique and raw window into the lives of people who are homeless and marginalized because of addictions, mental illness, and generational trauma. This book is a testament to the power of hope, friendship, the generosity of people who own nothing, and using art to promote healing. It is also a strong argument for the harm-reduction model of managed-alcohol programs.

E218 - James Francis - Writing Your Story While Running The Race, Men's Mental Health and Battling Being Alone
The Book: here's Coffee in the Fridge: One Man's Journey Through Anxiety and Depression
Does our past define us? Or does it merely serve to inform our future?
At its heart, this book is a story of overcoming anxiety and depression, as well as suicidal tendencies and attempts. With a remarkably candid approach, peppered with dry humor and keen observation, author James Francis takes us on a journey that is all at once deep, dark, twisting, and ultimately so very redemptive.
One part gripping memoir, and one part how-to guide, you will come away with tools such as:
A better understanding of anxiety and depression
Ideas for a roadmap to personal mental health
Exploration of personal and romantic relationship dynamics in regard to mental health
Notable authors to read on the journey to healing
Music suggestions to stir your soul and learn from
A reality check on the uniqueness of each person’s journey
    And so much more…
This is a book of triumph, a victory over mental health struggles earned through the hardest of trials. You can use your past to create a healthier future too - it starts here, it starts now.
    About James Francis
James Francis is an entrepreneur and professional speaker. He has been a successful executive starting and running several businesses in the well-being and insurance markets.
He grew up on Long Island and he and his family have lived on the shoreline of Connecticut for over 28 years.

E217 - Nick Stitle and his first book in a four-part series called Stormless
Nick Stitle is a young, rising author with several projects in development.
Nick is seventeen years old, and while Stormless is his first “real” book, it is far from the first story that he has ever told.
After spending nearly all of my middle school years and the first half of my high school career writing novels and building worlds of myth, I am finally ready to share my works with the world.
I live in Indiana, with my mom and dad, my older brother, and my two dogs.
Stormless, the first installment of a massive high fantasy series, is in the final editing stages. Stormless welcomes readers into the world of Auris, a continent ripe with epic histories, unique magic systems, and complex characters. The second of four installments is in the final editing stages as well.

    Show notes

E216 - Dominique Krystal Dawn - From Law Enforcement to Authorship with Stormey Knights
    About the Author
Dominique Krystal Dawn is a sage that uses creative storytelling to dive deeper into the personal motivations and pain point perspectives masked as ordinary life decisions. She was born and raised in Cleveland, Ohio, where she learned the tough spiritual lessons that each soul must grow through. Dominique desires to reignite hope and facilitate healing and self-realization in each reader so that despite their beginning, they can get back on purpose and live a fulfilling life.
    Why is life so hard?
That’s the question that Stormey Knights can’t stop asking herself. She doesn’t know her father, and her mother, Amber, has been prostituting to support her drug habit ever since Stormey can remember.
Up until recently, Stormey and her sister, Skye, were best friends but now, Stormey doesn’t know where their relationship lies. Skye started running the streets with her boyfriend, a drug dealer only concerned with fast money and expensive items and it’s only a matter of time before Skye gets caught up.
Worrying about everyone else is making it hard for Stormey to live out her dream and become an artist, a dream that her friend, Ace, supports heavily. But when tragedy strikes his family, she's nervous that he might take the wrong path, too.
The only consistently good thing in her life is her aunt, Jewel, but even Stormey knows that Aunt Jewel won’t be around forever. What will it take for Stormey and her family to come together and turn their lives around?

E215 - Alex Holland - Carving Out Time to Write a Colourful Six Novel Series Jul 17, 2023
    Show notes

EPISODE 215 - Alex Holland - Carving Out Time to Write a Colourful Six Novel Series
My name is Alex - I have been a lover of sci-fi and fantasy all my life. I was raised on Tolkien, Final Fantasy 7, Monty Python and mountains of movies, books & video games. I've always loved stories and the telling of them, how they can move and shape us. As I got older I fell in love with psychology and the writing of stories, like the heroes journey framework from Joseph Campbell. After many, many years of consuming, I finally managed to pull myself away from the shiny internet and make something that combined everything into The Prism Hexology
In this episode, author Alex Holland shares how he is intentionally carving out time to bring an ambitious six-book fantasy series to life while balancing family, creativity, and discipline. Writing at 4 a.m. before his young children wake up, Alex highlights a core idea that drives his progress: if the desire is strong enough, the hour does not matter. He reframes productivity through the lens of purpose, encouraging creators to identify their “one thing” and prioritize it daily.
A major focus of the conversation is the difference between lag and lead metrics. Alex explains that outcomes like a finished book are lag measures, while daily actions such as word count are lead measures. By breaking a 100,000-word novel into a manageable daily target, he removes overwhelm and builds consistency. This approach, combined with the concept of “tiny habits,” allows large creative goals to become achievable through small, repeatable actions.
Alex also reflects on the mindset shift required to move from consumer to creator. After years of sitting on an idea that began when he was fifteen, he realized he needed to let go of old habits, ego, and limiting beliefs. Embracing a beginner’s mindset opened the door to learning structure, storytelling, and craft. He emphasizes that creativity often flows when you act as a conduit, showing up consistently and allowing ideas to develop rather than forcing perfection.
The episode dives into the rich world of his series, built around color-based realms, philosophical themes, and human behavior. From a “prism” structure spanning six books to deeper explorations of identity, conflict, and balance, Alex blends imagination with intentional design. He also discusses modern tools like AI art, audiobooks, and multi-platform storytelling to expand how audiences experience his work.
Underlying everything is a strong belief in personal responsibility and internal narrative. Alex challenges the stories people tell themselves about why they cannot succeed, urging listeners to question those beliefs and replace them with empowering ones. Visualization, daily focus, and emotional connection to a goal all play a role in sustaining long-term creative momentum.
Key takeaway: Big creative goals are achieved through small, consistent daily actions driven by a clear vision and a strong “why.” Focus on what you can do today, and let the results take care of themselves.
