We've all heard a story about an MLM funneling someone into a course scam, but what happens when the course scam funnels you into an MLM? For Andrea, all she wanted to do was help people, so why not supplement her college degree with some self guided, self-help courses and become a certified life coach? But from day one, everything seemed strange, and instead of trusting her gut, she trusted handsome young men in fancy suits. It wasn't until she ended up in the ER that she "woke up" and saw the scam for what it really was.
*Next Wednesday's episode starts a strange 2-part Rabbit Hole into Thomas Willhite. Stay Tuned!*

To the outside world Ellery and Lisa Bennett seemed like the picture perfect couple of happiness and success. A follower of The Law of Attraction, Ellery eventually found himself deeply entranced by the " Fake it til you make it" lifestyle, going all in on several MLMs and bad business deals while maintaining the guise of a "6-Figure Income", until it all became too much.

When I got an email from Mike Rothschild, asking me if I would be open to making a QAnon + MLM episode, I jumped at the chance. After interviewing and chatting with several people who slid down that pipeline, I knew we had to dedicate an episode to the terrifying cult movement creeping out of the darkest corners of the web and into your social feeds with little difficulty. And surprisingly, not all conspiracy theorists come with tinfoil hats, some are hawking wellness supplements and fad diets at the PTA meeting.

Back in 1999, a supplement was created that claimed to be the cure for mental illness called EMPower Plus. It had rave reviews by devotees, and even became the star in an MLM product lineup. But when the Ramsay family decided to wean their son off his medication, in favor of a megadose of this miracle "cure all" vitamin, they never expected the tragic outcome.

Ella Kruczynska just wanted to document her health and weight loss journey on Instagram and maybe help a few people along the way. At first she was happy to find a community where she felt valued and welcomed, but when she was inundated with the same messages from different women proclaiming how amazing she was, how great she looked and how their miracle products could help her even more, she got suspicious. Ella didn't know what an MLM was, or why she needed these expensive shakes, but it wasn't until she couldn't take the harassment any longer that she looked deeper and started connecting the dots.

Have you ever heard the name Brownie Wise? If it seems vaguely familiar that makes sense. She was a pioneer in direct sales at a time when "upper management was no place for a woman", and defied all odds in a male dominated industry. She was revered for her charm, confidence and savvy business skills, until she got too much attention and was wiped from Tupperware history.

As a GenX content creator, Julie Anderson tells it like it is. Yet somehow she spent the better part of 5 years neck deep in 2 different commercial cults, the shampoo we love to hate and a business coaching scam that turned her into a person she didn't even recognize. Julie missed almost all of the red flags, until some honest conversations lead to her watching the golden shine of her flashy business mentor flake away to reveal his true deceptive intentions.

Jeannette was a Diamond Coach during her 5 year stint in Beachbody, running the MLM rat race with undiagnosed ADHD, chasing the dopamine fueled high of being a top BossBabe. I also struggled with undiagnosed ADHD while in MLM, chasing the same fix and so I wondered, Is there a connection between MLM and Neurodivergency? Jeannette and I talk about the similarities between our journeys with ADHD, how MLMs and social media played a part, and what healthy boundaries and personal privacy in a digital space looks like.

To add more education and content to our MLMs Abroad episodes, I asked my friend Nic to come and chat about her time in MLM, share with us some companies we may not know and share what she's learned as someone on the outside now looking in. We've chatted about how politics play a large role in MLMs in the US, but did you realize they are just as well connected across the pond? This chat with Nic is just a dip into a deeper topic and problem within MLMS, and we've only just begun.

Have you ever wanted to live a "cleaner" or "healthier" life? One day you're living free of toxic chemicals, the next you're being fear mongered into a wildly antithetical existence under the guise of "business". For Atalie, being pregnant and terrified of harming her unborn child lead her down a path darker than she had imagined from a health and wellness company. It's a slippery slope from "toxin free" to conspiracy theorist and Atalie walked the line for over 3 years before sharing her truth.
