[022]: Defender of the Universe! Jul 23, 2014
    Show notes

Marc Morrell and Special Guest Host Dan Jolley review 4 more episodes from the Original Lion Force Voltron Series, where they provide comparisons with the GoLion episodes from which these Voltron episodes were made. Dan provides a unique perspective, since he has watched these episodes as a fan when he was a kid, then watched these episodes as an adult writer, and had to research these episodes again as a writer of Voltron Comics for Devil's Due Publishing.

If you recall, we haven't reviewed the Original Series Voltron Episodes since Podcast #15. We finished reviewing Episode 8 The Stolen Lion (Stolen Blue Lion) during that podcast. So, this podcast episode covers the following Original Series Voltron episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis):

9 – A Pretty Spy (Girl of the Land of Evil)

10 – Secret of the White Lion (Curse of the White Lion)

11 - Surrender (Red Rain of Hell)

12 - Bad Birthday Party (Evil Doings of the Emperor)

Listen as Marc brings back Dan Jolley, our special guest from Podcast #7, to discuss the differences between the Voltron and GoLion versions of these 4 episodes. This story arc shows that Princess Allura is still unsure of herself in her role on the team. It also shows that Voltron is not always the one who saves the day.

Marc closes out the episode with a preview of upcoming episodes, including a surprise episode from San Diego Comic-Con, a Vehicle Voltron episode, and possibly, an interview with one of the voice actors from the original Voltron Series.

    Thanks for listening!

Moira has been a Voltron fan since she was a kid back in the 80s. Through the years the memory of the show never faded. When a wave of nostalgia hit in the early 2000s she went looking on the internet to find any information on that old show she loved and was surprised to find a whole community of people who also never forget that show from their childhood. The discovery of the world of fanfiction opened a whole new world where the original show continued to live on in the imaginations of its fans. She maintains a Voltron fansite resource site just for those fanfiction authors on where to find the source materials and to feed their imaginations to keep on writing.

She remembers walking over a mile back in her hometown (back in the day..uphill both ways in the Oklahoma snow of course..) to buy her very own Allura action figure at Western Auto store because she couldn't wait anymore. She’s been a die-hard fangirl ever since. One of her first computer programs she wrote in 6th grade was a Voltron Choose-your-own-adventure game! But, Voltron and her other giant robot and Mecha loves had to be her little secret because all of her friends were into lame 'girl' things like Sweet Valley High and Little House on the Prairie books. It's only in the past few years that she finally met other females who love Voltron as much as she does.

[019]: WEP President Ted Koplar Jun 18, 2014
    Show notes

10,000 Listens! Let’s Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast has been heard 10,000 times, in over 66 countries around the world, and in many different formats.

A huge shout-out goes to all of you for helping us achieve this milestone in podcasting.

    10,000 Listens

As a reward, we started a contest a few weeks ago, and we asked fans to pretend that Ted Koplar, the President of World Events Productions, was standing in front of them. What would you say to the creator of Voltron: Defender of the Universe?

The fans responded, and as a result, we are giving away 10 Voltron Prize Packs to 10 lucky winners. Those winners are identified during this episode, and will be contacted by email so we can ship those to your homes right away!

    Ted Koplar

And, as an added “Thank You” to the fans, we have an interview with Ted Koplar during this episode!

Mr. Koplar tells us all the details about how World Events Productions began, and how Voltron was developed 30 years ago. He also reflects on what makes Voltron special, and gives us an extremely good feeling about “the next generation of Voltron”, which Bob Koplar, all of WEP, and DreamWorks are working on as we speak.

We can’t tell you how thrilling it is to be able to bring Ted Koplar to the fans of this podcast. The goosebumps are never going to go away. Thank you, Ted Koplar, for giving Voltron to the world!

    Thanks for listening!

[018]: Original Series Associate Producer John Teichmann Jun 11, 2014
    Show notes

Welcome Back, Jeremy Corray! You will find Jeremy and John Teichmann have a lot in common in this episode, as we go back in time to when the first tapes were delivered to WEP, and an innocent mistake in shipping led to Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

Original Series Associate Producer John Teichmann gives Marc and Jeremy a first-hand account of what it was like to be involved with the Voltron phenomenon from the beginning, and what keeps people talking about it to this very day.

John identifies some of the key features that made broadcasters buy into the Voltron promise, including excellent stereo sound by Paul Vitello and his team, superior music by John Petersen and Dale Schacker, and great writing by Jameson Brewer, Marc Handler, and the rest of the writing team.

John gives insight into a side of the Voltron story we had not ever heard before, and details what he has been doing since Voltron finished its original television run in 1986.

All we can say is, when do we get to see Albegas?

    Thanks for listening!

[017]: Original Series Director Franklin Cofod (Part 2) May 22, 2014

Franklin also tells the story of where the name, Voltron, came from. Franklin also answers questions from Voltron fans submitted from all the corners of the globe.

Marc and Mike want to thank all the Voltron fans for participating in this podcast by submitting questions to Franklin Cofod. Your contributions and your fandom are what makes this podcast possible. Thank you!

Speaking of the fans, we want you to pay close attention to LetsVoltron.com within the next week. We are coming very close to 10,000 listens of this podcast since we started last December. To celebrate this milestone, we are having a contest, where we will pick 10 random entries to receive Voltron Prize Packs! The names will be announced in a podcast episode in June, once we reach 10,000 listens. In that episode, we will also be providing an interview with another special guest that the Voltron fans will love!

Also coming in June will be our exclusive interview with Original Series Associate Producer, John Teichmann.

    Thanks for listening!

[016]: Original Series Director Franklin Cofod (Part 1) May 16, 2014
    Show notes

In the first of two episodes covering a terrific interview with Original Voltron Series Director Franklin Cofod, Marc and Mike go deep to find out how the creative production team, based in the Los Angeles area, made the original episodes of Voltron: Defender of the Universe.

Franklin hits it from all angles:

    • How they made the pilot that they sold to the broadcasters
    • The members of the production team
    • The writing
    • The voice acting
    • The animation
    • The music
    • The sound effects
    • The mixing and editing
    • The daily grind

No stone is left unturned because Franklin talked to us for 2 hours! This is the longest interview you will ever find with Franklin Cofod. And this episode only covers the first half.

Next week, we'll conclude this interview with questions from fans all over the world.

    Thanks for listening!

    [015]: Ready to Assemble! May 08, 2014
    Show notes

The Original Voltron: Defender of the Universe TV Episodes are reviewed once more in this episode of Let’s Voltron: The Official Voltron Podcast. In this episode, Marc and Mike finish reviewing V:DotU, Episode 4: The Missing Key, where Voltron forms for the 1st time. Then, we continue reviewing episodes up to and including Episode 8: The Stolen Lion.

Before Marc and Mike talk about the episodes, Mike lets us know that the first wave of Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron Pre-Orders have shipped, and Marc gives an account of receiving it and opening it with his son, Lucas. This really is a great Collectors Set to own, and whether you preserve it as a collectible or take it out of the box and play with it (which we recommend!), you will marvel at the quality of the craftsmanship that George Sohn and everyone at Toynami have put into this 30th Anniversary Die-Cast Voltron.

If you still haven’t ordered one yet, here is a link to it at the Voltron Store.

Mike also reports that Issue #3 of the Robotech/Voltron Crossover Comic Series has been released, and WEP is offering a 3-issue bundle.

If you recall, Marc and Mike stopped reviewing Episode 4: The Missing Key in Podcast Episode #6 (We’re Space Explorers) just before the Voltron Force formed Voltron for the 1st time. So, this podcast episode covers the following episodes (Beast King GoLion episode titles in parenthesis):

    • 4 -- The Missing Key (Resurrection of the Legendary Giant)

    • 5 -- The Princess Joins Up (Fortress for the New Struggle)

    • 6 -- The Right Arm of Voltron (Death of Shirogane the Hero)

    • 7 -- The Lion Has New Claws (The Beautiful Princess' Battle)

    • 8 -- The Stolen Lion (Stolen Blue Lion)

Listen as we discuss the precarious situation of the Voltron Force’s struggle to defend Arus with Voltron, only to lose one of their own, and have the Princess step up to join the team. This story arc has many key elements that carry the series forward and establishes precedents for future episodes.

Marc closes out the episode with a special announcement for next week’s episode of the podcast:

Franklin Cofod, the Director, Producer, and Showrunner for the Original Voltron Series run from 1984-1986, will be our special guest for an extended interview that will cover a wealth of Voltron information that you will hear NOWHERE else. This will cover the next 2 episodes of the podcast.

So, what have you always wanted to know about the original series that is still unknown? What questions do you have for Franklin Cofod? You have until Monday, May 12, at 6 PM EDT to get your questions in. Respond in the comments on this notes page, or call 860-4MULLET and leave a voicemail question, or send us an email at letsvoltronpodcast@gmail.com.

Be a part of one of the most comprehensive interviews you will ever hear about Voltron! Send us your questions NOW!

    Thanks for listening!

[014]: Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con Recap Apr 18, 2014
    Show notes

Marc gets the lowdown from Mike about everything VOLTRON that happened at the Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con, including two panels and a booth, hosted by World Events Productions.

WEP Booth at St. Louis Comic Con

Mike goes into great detail about the process of setting up the booth on the convention floor, and what products were available to Voltron fans, including the opening of the Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron for the first time! Mike also let us know what types of questions fans had when they came by the WEP booth.

Marc asks Mike to take us through both of the panels. Saturday's panel was the 30th Anniversary Celebration panel which was kicked off with a special new 30th Anniversary Voltron Compilation video, edited by our own Michael French. That really got the fans going! Watch the video here.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/6DRQkzuC2oc?wmode=opaque&enablejsapi=1

As fans lined up to ask questions at the panel, the first question was about the live-action movie, which was also a common question at the Voltron booth. Mike and Marc talk about this at length during the podcast.

There were many products that were mentioned during the panel, including the Toynami 30th Anniversary Voltron, T-Shirts, Hoodies, Hockey Jerseys, and more, and even products that didn't make the cut, like the Voltron Form Blazing Sword Boxer Shorts.

Also debuting for the first time ever was the Let's Voltron Podcast trailer, made by our own Marc Morrell. Fan response was great, and people were given postcards at the WEP booth, similar to the cards that were sent to some of the people that have participated in the podcast. Watch the Let's Voltron trailer.

    https://www.youtube.com/embed/ENm5JIo0CQM?wmode=opaque&enablejsapi=1

We had talked during the podcast about making the Pop Culture Video available as a link on this notes page, but that video is something that will only be shown as an exclusive for Voltron Panels at the conventions. So, if you want to see that, you should try to make your way to either San Diego Comic Con in July or New York Comic Con in October.

Voltron Panel at St. Louis Comic Con

Michael also talked about the Kids Panel that was geared to the younger Voltron fans on Sunday.

    Once again, thanks for listening!

[013]: WEP VP Bob Koplar (Part 2) Apr 03, 2014
    Show notes

This episode of Let’s Voltron continues our conversation with Bob Koplar, the Vice President of World Events Productions. In Part 2, Bob answers all the fan questions and thanks the fans for their support for the last 30 years.

If you were ever curious if there will ever be Voltron Force toys, based on the Nicktoons cartoon, Bob gives us the FINAL word on that subject.

If you wondered what DreamWorks’ acquisition of Classic Media will mean for the Voltron franchise, Bob gives us some insight into what WEP knows at this point.

If you wanted to know what conventions WEP will be attending to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Voltron, Bob lets us know where they will be this year.

If you want to know more about Beast King GoLion, the original Japanese cartoon that Voltron was derived from, then you will hear Bob talk about that in this episode.

If you had submitted a question that was not asked during this episode, we apologize if we could not include it this time around. There will be many more guests coming on the podcast this year, and there are many more opportunities to submit questions. So, keep trying, and we’ll make sure to include your questions.

We want to thank Bob Koplar for being our special guest, and for everything that WEP has done over the last 30 years since Voltron entered our lives and became such a lasting memory. We are looking forward to seeing more Voltron in the future.

Don’t forget, Wizard World St. Louis Comic Con is this weekend, April 4-6, in St. Louis. We are looking forward to talking about the convention and the response from Voltron fans that are attending from all over.

    Thanks for listening!
