Being a yoga teacher is not only about teaching yoga but equally about understanding how to run a small scale business. So often yoga teachers forget to think of the business side of yoga. During the pandemic, many yoga teachers have had to start running their own businesses.

I was interviewed by Cora Geroux of the teaching yoga podcast last month. We had a great conversation about the backend side of running studios, what it takes to keep things going, what failure looks like, and most importantly, how to live your yoga in your business.

Dropping the interview this week! I hope you enjoy it...

Please rate and review us if you enjoy this episode. It would mean so much to me.

    5. Cultural appropriation of yoga - a starting point with Madhura Bhagawat Aug 18, 2020
    Show notes

In this episode, we chat about a topic dear to my heart - Cultural appropriation of yoga with my guest, Madhura Bhagawat.

Being born & raised in India, this topic is close to my heart. (I bet you've seen my campaigns on Instagram) & a couple of months ago, I met Madhura online. She's a force of nature, working tirelessly to shed light on what yoga is truly about. I knew with her deep understanding of yoga, politics & law she would shed so much light on this topic. She's honest & tells it like it is!

This episode is the start of many such conversations to come about yoga in the western world. But think of this as a starting point for yoga teachers & studio owners.

    HIGHLIGHTS>>>

    • What is cultural appropriation? How is it different from appreciation?
    • Why Indian yoga teachers are often left out of mainstream western yoga?
    • The yoga scene in Scotland (where Madhura is currently based)
    • What does decolonizing yoga mean?
    • Appropriation we see in modern yoga studios...including use of the word yogi, namaste, using music in class, mala beads as a fashion statement, use of deities and sacred symbols as decor and so much more...
    • We talk about tokenism for Indian yoga teachers & hiring more Indian and South Asian teachers in studios and teacher trainings
    • Is yoga a religion?
    • Lastly, we talk about how some yoga teachers are sensationalizing and using the BLM movement & other social causes to create controversy and connect Indian politics to the BLM and taking things out of context. How yoga teachers need to be cautious of what they understand from social media?
    • How Instagram is not the place for yoga education and more...

    1. Yoga in India versus Yoga in the US Jul 31, 2020
    Show notes

In our pilot episode, we highlight the differences of yoga in India versus yoga in the US or western world at large. A must listen if you’re an ardent yoga student, a yoga teacher or yoga studio business owner.

Arundhati Baitmangalkar, the show’s host, shares her insight as an Indian immigrant yoga teacher who moved from India and started to teach yoga in the US a few years ago. She highlights the top 5 differences that are immediately noticeable when you walk into an American yoga studio. Highlighting crucial aspects of cultural appropriation but keeping it basic to get the conversation started.

Based on her first article that went viral in 2014, Arundhati draws the parallels of where yoga originated (India) to what has been made of this practice in the western society – this episode is important for modern-day yoga practitioners and yoga teachers alike to start taking notice of the roots of yoga & how far we’ve moved from what yoga really is.

    0. Let's Talk Yoga Podcast - Trailer Jul 20, 2020
    Show notes

Arundhati Baitmangalkar, is an immigrant, Indian yoga teacher living in the US. Having grown a 6 figure yoga career from the ground with no business background, no handstands, and the free information found on google, she created the LTY podcast to inspire other yoga teachers of color. This podcast highlights important conversations often left out of the mainstream yoga-like cultural appropriation of yoga, applying yoga in business, and raising the bar for yoga teachers & studios.

Each week, Arundhati drops a new episode to help yoga teachers and enthusiasts take action with tangible steps in living their yoga. Tune in if you're a yoga teacher, business owner, or a yoga enthusiast if you care deeply about retaining its authenticity, or looking to be a better yoga teacher.

We're redefining what it means to be a modern, successful yoga teacher - moving away from the cliche of an all-white, thin, blonde yoga industry to one where diversity is the norm.

We go where no other yoga podcast has gone before - why there aren't any mainstream Indian yoga teachers, what to do about it and so much more. Voted as one of the top 20 POC yoga teachers to watch out for by Yogawalla, Arundhati has been teaching for a over a decade. She runs a full-service yoga studio in Seattle, is an ex-Bollywood dancer, blogger, and a huge believer that the world doesn't need more yoga teachers it needs better ones.
