Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

The team included Walter Payton, Jim McMahon and William “The Refrigerator” Perry. It was a gregarious if not at times, controversial group that included Fencik, the ferocious hitting safety who teamed with Doug Plank to be known as “The Hit Men.”

    Full Ep: Lou Canellis Fox 32 TV Chicago 11 10 21 Nov 10, 2021
    Show notes

He’s not just a popular sportscaster, he’s an entrepreneur. Lou Canellis has been part of Chicago’s media scene for over 35 years gaining national recognition for his coverage of Michael Jordan and the Bulls. He was the very first voice on ESPN radio (yes the very first voice with sports updates back in the early 90s.) Canellis has sampled just about everything from 190 North which was a lifestyle and entertainment program to being a restauranteur. He’s had success and failures along the way but his current involvement with Avli, a modern Greek restaurant, has been a huge success.
But more than anything, Canellis is tied to his job as a TV sportscaster for Fox 32 in Chicago adding he’s led a dream life.
Now add to that becoming a father at age 55 and you have a complete package.

Full Ep: World Series Ratings/History Perspective, NFL on FOX, etc.! 11 2 21 Nov 02, 2021
    Show notes

It's the first show of November and host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis are back to go over the latest in Sports TV and media.
First up, the World Series continues, as Houston stayed alive with a game 5 win Sunday night. Jon gives insight and a great comparison to the famed '86 World Series with the Mets/Red Sox and what other network TV ratings looked like 35 years ago during that week.
The guys also discuss the broadcast shift by Fox Sports of having up and coming broadcaster Joe Davis work the Bucs-Saints national game with Troy Aikman. This as Joe Buck is still working the World Series on Fox with John Smoltz. Is Davis a potential "heir apparent" to one of those roles in place of Buck or is it Buck's "gig for life" until he doesn't want to do them?
The guys also conclude with some "Love it or Leave it" that includes. the topics of analytics, marching bands at college football games and also basketball shot clocks, too!

Full Ep: John Paxson Chicago Bulls Great 11 1 21 Nov 02, 2021
    Show notes

Nearly 37 years and counting. That’s how long John Paxson has been with the Chicago Bulls in a variety of roles. He was part of three championship teams as a player and also hit a game winning shot to secure the third title. He also served as an assistant coach, radio analyst, general manager and team vice president. He helped rebuild a Bulls franchise with players such as Derrick Rose, Joachim Noah, Luol Deng and Kirk Heinrich but the first of three knee injuries to Rose crippled the Bulls chances of another title.
After several more years as of trying to reshape the Bulls after Rose’s injury, Paxson stepped down, accepting a role as an advisor to new team president Arturas Karnisovas.
Paxson is one of the most open and honest people individuals on the Chicago sports landscape and he has planets of stories about his days with the Bulls, Notre Dame and growing up in basketball mad Dayton Ohio.
