Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Full: Laura Okmin Fox Sports NFL Coverage 10 5 21 Oct 05, 2021
    Show notes

You can see her every Sunday at some NFL stadium. Laura Okmin’s job as sideline reporter for FOX Sports has gained her a national reputation for solid journalism and a professional demeanor second to none. And she ranks as the third longest tenured sideline reporter behind Lisa Salters and Michele Tafoya. But her climb to success included lessons learned from some of the very best athletes such as Michael Jordan, Charles Barkley and Brian Urlacher and she’s quick to credit famed broadcasters like Dock Stockton and Kevin Harlan.
But perhaps her biggest success is the development of her company, Galvanize, aimed at helping women break through on all levels of the sports broadcasting and management business. “It started with some 20 women. Now there are over 2,500” said an elated Okmin who wants to give back as much as she’s gotten.
Her entertaining interview takes you behind the scenes of a self made woman who loves her jobs but more importantly wants young women to say see how women are again on camera the way men have.

Full Ep: ESPN "Manning-cast" Soars, Notre Dame Football, WNBA, etc.! 9 28 21 Sep 29, 2021
    Show notes

On the latest edition of the show, host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") of SportsMediaWatch.com fame are back to discuss the latest topics in U.S. Sports media.
This includes the quickly rising phenomenon of the Manning brothers on ESPN2's "Manning-cast" alternate broadcast of Monday Night Football. However, the increased audience is all about to cease, as the Mannings won't be on the next few Monday nights. So, Steve Levy, Brian Griese and Lewis Riddick will have the audience to themselves starting with the Raiders at the Chargers for next week.
Then, the guys talk some College Football and specifically, the draw of Notre Dame Football, which pulled in a really solid 5 million viewers for a noon Eastern time broadcast on Fox Sports. Why do the Irish draw so well, whenever they are on?
Jon also has thoughts on the WNBA and it's rising ratings at the lower level, as their playoffs continue this week.
And of course, we play some "Love it or Leave it?" with Jon on subjects like the Ryder Cup and Halloween decorations in September.

    Show notes

On the latest edition of the show, host T.J. Rives is back with Jon Lewis, a.k.a. Paulsen, from SprotsMediaWatch.com to recap a wild and hugely watched weekend of the NFL on TV, etc.
To what do we attribute the NFL's significant ratings bounce back from this past weekend? What did John think of the decision to both CBS and Fox sharing the first Sunday doubleheader of the year?
Jon also has some strong feelings again on the debut of the alternate ESPN Monday Night Football broadcast hosted by Peyton and Eli Manning. The Mannings and their guests seemed to entertain. However, it's not even a permanent broadcast on the weekly Monday night slate this season.
Jon also has opinions on everything from the MLB Wildcard to the Showtme hit drama "Billions" to whether or not "flip phones" will make a comeback in the cell phone industry?
