Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Full Ep: College Football Playoff Heisman Trophy NBA Flex Scheduling and "Die Hard" 12 8 21 Dec 08, 2021
    Show notes

It's another edition of our podcast and host T.J.Rives is back with Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") of SportsMediaWatch.com to go over several subjects and have a little fun about "Christmas Movies" too.
First, the guys discuss "Championship Saturday" in college football, including Alabama's upset of Georgia and Michigan trouncing of Iowa and what those outcomes meant (or not) for CBS and Fox's TV ratings. Also, what about the College Football Playoff committee subjectively, allowing Cincinnati in, and keeping Alabama and Georgia from playing each other in the semis?
Then, the topic turns to the NFL and the ratings successes continuing for the late Sunday window of games. This week it was the dramatic finish to Pittsburgh and Baltimore that just missed going to OT. Also, what about the wild Monday night game in high winds at Buffalo? That's where the "Sky Cam" couldn't be used for replays and it was a factor late in the game on a controversial play.
Finally, we always play "Love it or Leave it" with Jon and he answers on NBA "flex scheduling," the Heisman presentation and whether Bruce Willis' "Die Hard" is truly a "Christmas Movie" or not/

Full Ep: Cowboys-Raiders Scores for CBS, CFB Dominates Saturday TV, etc.! 11 30 21 Nov 30, 2021
    Show notes

On the latest edition of the show, Host T.J. Rives is back with Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") of SportsMediaWatch.com to discuss the latest happenings with games, ratings and news about it all.
First, the guys discuss the massive audience for the Dallas Cowboys-Las Vegas Raiders Thanksgiving Day game that CBS claimed was the most watched regular season game in 30 years. Jon throws some water on that and explains why it isn't quite what they claimed, but still HUGE success.
Further, what else did well in terms of sports viewership, etc. last Thursday, too?
Then, the guys turn to the two mega-college football rivalry games of Ohio State vs. Michigan (Fox) and Alabama-Auburn (CBS) from last Saturday. Those traditional matchups are always a ratings gold mine. How big does Jon think the final audiences will end up.
Also, the slate and schedule of Championship Saturday is out for this weekend and Jon wants to know why one game in particular is being left out of a prime time slot?
Finally, the guys play some "Love it or Leave it?" on College Hoops, the "Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade" and online shopping, too.

There have been some unique sports analysts over time. John Madden, Al McGuire, John McEnroe, Walt Frazier, etc. But few have offered the enthusiasm and catch phrases like Chicago Bulls TV analyst Stacey King. “Gimme the hot sauce” and “sriracha” come to mind along with “Too big, too strong, too fast, too good” to describe the exploits of Derrick Rose.
King was the Bulls’ 6th pick in the first round in the 1989 draft. He was part of three Bulls championship teams. He also played in the 1988 NCAA championship game as part of a very good Oklahoma team that lost to Kansas. He even coached the Rockford Lightening of the then Continental Basketball Association to the title game.
But since 2006 King has carved a career as one of the most enjoyable analysts incorporating as many as 100 catch phrases. And he has plenty of stories in a two part series filled with laughs.
