Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Jim Nantz Departing CBS Hoops Soon + World Series, NFL, LIV Golf Finale' And Halloween! | Sports Media Watch Podcast Oct 25, 2022
    Show notes

It's the latest edition of the show, where everything from a surprise announcement from legendary CBS play by play man Jim Nantz about retiring from the NCAA tourney coverage after '23, to the start of the Astros-Phillies World Series and more is on the docket.
Host T.J. Rives returns with Jon Lewis, the founder, writer and operator of SportsMediaWatch.com, to discuss all the top storylines.
Why is Nantz stepping away from hoops but not completely from CBS NFL and Golf roles? What about Ian Eagle replacing him for hoops and perhaps eventually for other sports? And how does it compare to other broadcasters backing off work vs. continuing to press on into their 70s and 80s?
Next, the Houston Astros meet the Philadelphia Phillies in the 2022 World Series. What are Jon's thoughts on the schedule of games and ratings predictions? It's also intriguing that if the series goes longer into next week that the backdrop of the Eagles playing at the Houston Texas on Thursday Night Football next week will be part of the discussion with the baseball teams from the same cities still battling.
The show finishes with "Love it or Leave it?" on subjects like Formula One racing getting a new deal with ESPN for next year + Brittany Griner appeal denied in Russia for her jail sentence + the LIV Golf Series about to finish it's first year with ridiculous money on the line for their final two man team tourney in Miami?

    Show notes

It's a brand new edition of the show with plenty to discuss on the football and baseball fronts. Plus, a special guest joins the newest edition of the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast."
Host T.J.Rives and Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com return with their insight and analysis of the latest in sports media and ratings.
The guys discuss the latest soaring success for CBS Sports and their SEC coverage that featured Tennessee's dramatic 52-49 win over Alabama last Saturday. It was the highest rated college football game to date this season. Jon has thoughts on Alabama's brand and how it helps generate more interest.
Next, the guys discuss the recent NFL weekend that started with a poor matchup of the Washington Commanders and Chicago Bears on Thursday night's Amazon Prime but then excelled with the Buffalo Bills against the Kansas City Chiefs on CBS followed by the Dallas Cowboys and the Philadelphia Eagles in prime time on NBC. Jon has perspective on it all.
Then, it's a conversation with Big Ten Network's Mike Hall. Mike has been with the conference's #1 TV outlet since it's inception in 2007. But, Mike is most known for having won the ESPN reality show "Big Break" which gave him his first big job with the network. Mike talks about the pressures of being hired under those circumstances, how people like Scott Van Pelt mentored him and how he later helped launch ESPNU, the college news and game broadcasting channel before leaving for his current roles at BTN.
Mike also discusses how his current job has evolved, including a fun weekly segment this year of him going to different Big Ten cities to find the best burger to eat in them!
Finally, Jon and T.J. play some weekly "Love it or Leave it?" about the baseball postseason format, the month of October being a great sports month and more!

    ESPN Baseball's Jesse Rogers | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 18, 2022
    Show notes

He started his career as a producer for the “Monsters of the Midday”, one of the original shows on a Chicago all sports radio startup in 1992. But Jesse Rogers climbed the ladder from WSCR the Score to eventually becoming a premier baseball writer and on-air reporter for ESPN where he’s currently covering the playoffs. For a guy who originally wanting to be an umpire, Rogers has to judge what to write and how to fit his stories into a TV package.
A native of suburban Chicago, Rogers latched on to ESPN when it was seeking someone to cover the Blackhawks who, at the time, were just rising to prominence and would eventually win three Stanley cups in 6 seasons. But during that run, Rogers was switched to the Cubs who ironically were also on their rise and would win the World Series in 2016.
But in 2021 his career took a different path as a result of the shocking death of Pedro Gomez, then ESPN’s leading baseball reporter. Rogers would eventually inherit the position.
During this wonderful podcast Rogers discusses, among other things, the book he co-authored on former Cubs manager Joe Maddon and his tricky relationship with then team president Theo Epstein.

Karl Ravech ESPN MLB And College Hoops P x P Convo | Announcer Schedules Podcast Oct 14, 2022
    Show notes

On the latest interview from the Announcer Schedules Podcast, Karl Ravech of ESPN joins Mike Gill and Phil de Montmollin for a wide-ranging conversation that includes...
    * Working with Tim Kurkjian, his current partner on ESPN Radio's coverage of the MLB Playoffs
    * Working with Craig Kilborn, early SportsCenter Days
    * Working on Baseball Tonight and that show's prominence in the 1990s.
    * His life-changing heart attack at age 33
    * Reflections back on this year's Sunday Night Baseball package with Eduardo Perex, David Cone and Buster Olney
    * Play-by-play vs. Studio work
    * Little League World Series
    * Following Tiger Woods in the chase for Golf's Grand Slam in 2000
    * What he felt were his big breaks in his path to Bristol which included synchronicities with Bill Pidto
    * Ravech then asked Mike and Phil's thoughts on the Sunday Night Baseball package
Veteran ESPN commentator Karl Ravech is the voice of Sunday Night Baseball, ESPN’s exclusive, national Major League Baseball game of the week, calling games alongside analysts Eduardo Perez and David Cone and multi-platform contributor Buster Olney.
Ravech joined ESPN in May 1993. His three decades of covering MLB for the network have included hosting ESPN’s studio coverage of the MLB playoffs and World Series since 1995, hosting ESPN’s MLB studio and pre-game show, Baseball Tonight, and serving as play-by-play commentator for Monday Night Baseball and for ESPN’s 2020 KBO League season coverage. He has also been the voice of ESPN’s Home Run Derby telecast since 2017.
Since 2006, Ravech has provided commentary for ESPN and ABC coverage of the Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa. In 2011, he added the Little League World Series Championship games and the College World Series to his yearly schedule. During the winter, Ravech is a play-by-play commentator on ESPN’s college basketball telecasts and has called the SEC basketball tournament since 2017.
Ravech has also anchored ESPN’s college basketball studio wraps operation. Additionally, in the fall of 2000, Ravech followed Tiger Woods’ quest for the Grand Slam while hosting ESPN’s golf coverage at Pebble Beach, St. Andrews and Valhalla.
In November of 1998, Ravech was playing a pickup game of basketball with friends from ESPN when he noticed a sharp pain in his chest. After receiving medical attention, the doctor informed Karl he had experienced a heart attack at the age of 33.
“That experience was a wake-up call,” said Ravech. “Now, through exercise and proper diet, my heart is as strong as a professional athlete. I run every day. Who knows why these things happen, but it changed me for the better.”
Prior to joining the network, Ravech served as the weekend sports anchor/reporter at WHTM-TV in Harrisburg, Pa. (1990-93). His assignments included the 1992 Senior U.S. Open golf tournament, Harrisburg Senators (Washington Nationals’ Double-A affiliate), and MLB spring training. He was nominated for a local Sports Emmy in 1990 and 1991.
From 1987 to 1990, Ravech was employed by WBNG-TV, in Binghamton, N.Y., as a sports anchor/reporter with assignments including the 1988 U.S. Open golf tournament.
Ravech served as the sports director at NewsCenter 7 in Ithaca, N.Y., and as a freelance sports producer for WCVB-TV in Boston (1986-87), while attending college.
Ravech received his Bachelor of Science degree in communications from Ithaca College in 1987. He received his master’s degree in management and leadership in 1990, from SUNY at Binghamton.

MLB Playoffs, College Football, NFL + NBA/NHL Crank Up | Sports Media Watch Podcast Oct 12, 2022
    Show notes

On the latest edition of the show, it's time for the "magic of October" and the MLB postseason, but how impacted will it be back the massive interest and audience for College Football and the NFL? We are ready to discuss that and more on the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast."
Host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com are back with their takes on the likes of the Yankees, Dodgers and Astros now getting involved in post-season play off their early byes. Plus, familiar face and voice Bob Costas returns calling the Guardians/Yankees series on TBS. Meanwhile, the new team on Fox of Joe Davis with John Smoltz has the upstart Phillies battling the defending champ Braves. And, it'l be the Padres-Dodgers and Mariners-Astros in the other best of 5 series.
The guys also discuss the past weekend of college football that saw several blowouts but also great battles and finishes for Alabama-Texas A & M and also Notre Dame and BYU in Las Vegas. Will the numbers continue to hold firm?
As for the NFL, the Thursday night Amazon Prime games don't have stellar matchups and Monday Night Football may suffer from some bad teams scheduled for it, as well. Jon has his thoughts. Still, the Cowboys win over the Rams scored big for Fox and still shows the tremendous influence of pro football TV audience for the networks that have it.
Then, T.J. talks with colleague George Ofman of the "Tell Me A Story I Don't Know" Podcast from this feed. George has Washington Commanders coach Ron Rivera on this week. They discuss Rivera's career as a player and assistant with the Bears first. Then, he became a Super Bowl coach with the Carolina Panthers and now, is trying to help the struggling Commanders get back on their feet. Rivera also talks stories of playing with Walter Payton, growing up an "Military brat" and overcoming cancer a couple of years ago.
Finally, it's "Love it or Leave it?" And, the guys talk Draymond Green, the start of the NHL season and even, whether Jon likes his horror movies or not?
It's all part of the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast" and make sure to follow/subscribe to this feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Goolge, etc. for more great content!!
