Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

World Cup Begins, College Football Winds Down + NFL Ratings Dominance And More! | Sports Media Watch Podcast Nov 23, 2022
    Show notes

It's a special Thanksgiving Day edition of the show, as host T.J. Rives and Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com return to go over everything from the "World Sport" showcasing in Qatar, to college football reaching rivalry weekend and the NFL remaining supreme in the audience and getting set for a Turkey Day triple-header.
As for the World Cup, how were the ratings for the Monday return for the U.S. Men against Wales and in comparison to other years? Plus, what are the projections for the Friday numbers for the U.S. against England highly anticipated opening round matchup?
Next, the attention turns to the gridiron and getting ready for Ohio St and Michigan and an epic battle between unbeatens for a spot in the conference title game and an almost assured spot in the College Football Playoff. Plus, what about the likes of TCU, USC and others lurking to try to get into the playoff, as well?
Then, the guys talk the NFL and how powerful television is now for the league as the Jets at New England was delayed because CBS could not get on the air due to power outage and technical difficulties and the league delayed the game for some 10 minutes from starting. Jon has thoughts and insight on it all.
Plus, what about the tremendous audience that's always there even in a blowout, for the Cowboys on a Sunday late afternoon? And what kind of numbers will the matchup with the Giants get for meeting Dallas on Thursday?
Then, we wrap with "Love it or Leave it?" on subjects like Disney replacing their CEO and what does it mean for ESPN? Plus, rivalries in college football and Thanksgiving food also are up for discussion.

    ESPN 1000 Host Marc Silverman | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Nov 22, 2022
    Show notes

Sports talk show hosts can be a dime a dozen. But ESPN 1000’s Marc Silverman is worth his weight in gold. This long time voice in Chicago has clearly made an impact on the Sports radio seen. Paired with former Bears’ wide receiver Tom Waddle, the duo has been together over 15 years, each with his own inimitable style “Silvy” as he’s best known, wears his emotions on his sleeve and considering he’s a life long Chicago sports fan (strong allegiances to the Bears and Cubs) it’s no surprise he’s helped capture a healthy audience to “The Waddle and Silvy Show.”
In part one of this two part episode Silvy takes us back to how he defied the odds, and a unique voice, to become one of this city’s most respected and enjoyable hosts.
Imagine being a young reporter and asking Michael Jordan for a one on one interview. Silvy did it and it paved to way to bigger and better things. While he remembers that moment he also gives a synopsis of Bears quarterback Justin Fields and whether his beloved Cubs can take the next step to respectability.
And part two will also be a must listen as Silvy discusses his celebrated and public bout with cancer.

NFL In Germany, UVA Football Homicides Lack Of Sports Outlets Coverage, NBA Off Turner? Etc. | Sports Media Watch Podcast Nov 16, 2022
    Show notes

It's another edition of the show that goes over all facets of sports media and coverage from the always tremendous ratings of the NFL to the NBA and whether Turner Sports would ever be forced out of paying for/airing pro basketball? We're talking about it on the "Sports Media Watch.com" Podcast.
Host T.J. Rives returns with Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com to give you their latest takes. T.J. is back in the USA from the historic first ever NFL regular season game in Germany as the Buccaneers defeated the Seahawks Sunday morning U.S. time. How did that game rate comparatively? Also, how did the rest of the day fare with Minnesota's wild OT win over the Bills followed by Green Bay's thrilling OT comeback win the Cowboys and even, the Eagles perfect record ending at the hands of the Commanders Monday night, too?
Next, the discussion turns to the coverage, or lack thereof, of the breaking news involving the shooting deaths of three University of Virginia football players by another former player late Sunday night. Jon is still dumbfounded by the lack of coverage by ESPN especially on Sunday night late into all day on Monday. The guys discuss other examples and scenarios that have gotten more thorough coverage.
Jon also has takes on whether Turner Sports might not always hang on to the NBA or not, in light of their parent company looking to slash and save money. T.J. has a thought on what else might be dumped first by Time Warner/Turner.
Finally, there's some "Love it or Leave it?" covering everything the the '72 Munich Summer Olympics to the death of iconic CNN Sports Tonight anchor from the 80s-2001, Fred Hickman and more!
It's all on the "Sports Media Watch.com Podcast and make sure to follow/subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!

    John Wiedeman Blackhawks Radio P X P Announcer | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Nov 15, 2022
    Show notes

John Wiedeman didn’t begin his sports broadcasting career until age 31 but he had a vision: becoming the voice of the Chicago Blackhawks. Fast forward from the early 90’s to 2006 when suddenly, the Blackhawks fired long time popular play by play announcer Pat Foley. Wiedeman, then working the radio for the New York Islanders was stunned by the news. He decided to apply for the radio opening, was offered the job and has been a fixture ever since. (Foley was rehired on the TV side in 2008 and retired after last season).
Wiedeman has seen it all from an emerging franchise to one that copped three Stanley Cup titles in 6 seasons to one that has crashed and burned. But he’s all aboard for the rebuild which included a new GM and coach and the departures of Foley and his analyst Eddie Olczyk who is now doing the same job in Seattle. As for the Hawks possibly dealing their two surefire hall of fame stars Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews before the trading deadline Wiedeman said I don’t know adding they’ve earned the right to direct their own careers. Both players are in the final year of 8 years contracts and have no movement clauses.
But will Wiedeman be in the move soon. He hopes not and would like to keep his role as the radio voice of the Hawks indefinitely. Time will tell.
In this wonderful podcast Wiedeman also recalls how he was a bartender at a famous Chicago comedy club where he met and discussed cars with…..Jay Leno!
