Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

NFL And NBA On Christmas Weekend CFB Playoff Looming And Jon's End Of Year Recognitions | Sports Media Watch Podcast Dec 28, 2022
    Show notes

It's our final episode of 2022 and host T.J. Rives and Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com are here to finish up strong. First, the guys go over this past Christmas weekend and the NFL obviously dominating Christmas Eve and then having their first ever triple header on Christmas Day. How much did the marquee games like the Eagles at the Cowboys, and the primetime Raiders at Steelers for the 50th anniversary of the "Immaculate Reception" game. A game that had a sad twist with the unexpected death of Franco Harris just days before. And while the NFL had an awful Broncos at Rams game in the middle of the day, it certainly had close/dramatic games involving Aaron Rodgers and the Packers win at the Dolphins first and Tom Brady and the Buccaneers dramatic OT win against Arizona in primetime on NBC. Jon also has thoughts on the NBA's quintuple header of games on ESPN/ABC Sunday and especially, the impact of Bucks-Celtics matchup late Christmas afternoon. Next, the guys talk the upcoming College Football Playoff games on Saturday for Michigan-TCU and Georgia-Ohio State. What about the matchups being on New Year's Eve but still they are on a Saturday. And, what about the potential championship game scenarios. Finally in "Love it or Leave it?" Jon goes over his end of the year stories and personalities in Sports Media that struck him the most for 2022. Argentina Wins World Cup, NFL/NBA On Christmas Day & More! | Sports Media Watch Podcast Dec 21, 2022
    Show notes

It's a festive edition of our show with Christmas coming up and we're ready to discuss the conclusion of the World Cup and the coverage of it on Fox Sports. Plus, the NFL winds down with dramatic weekends and outcomes headed into a showcase weekend for Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. And, we're ready to go over it all on the "SportsMediaWatch.com" Podcast. Host T.J. Rives and Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com return to go over Argentina's thrilling World Cup Final win over France and how the coverage and ratings did for Fox? Also, the game ran so long that it almost put Fox in the crazy/dangerous position of having to start airing their NFL coverage on another outlet like FS1 cable channel. Jon gives his thoughts and insight on it all. The guys morph that into talking this weekend's upcoming NFL coverage with should have massive audience for Cowboys/Eagles on Fox for Saturday afternoon/evening, but what about the Saturday night Raiders or Steelers game on the NFL Network? And, will the NFL score with a tripleheader on Sunday? This is especially when the Miami Dolphins are the only one of the six teams playing on Christmas that will have a wining record? Will it impact how much audience watches or not? Finally, some "Love it or Leave it?" includes the NBA playing 5 Christmas games on ESPN/NBC. Will they be completely dwarfed by the NFL? Jon gives his takes on that and more, including Christmas traditions for him. Patrick Crakes Television Ratings Expert/Consultant Conversation | Sports Media Watch Podcast Dec 16, 2022
    Show notes

It's a special edition of the show as we welcome Patrick Crakes, a former Fox Sports executive, and one of the foremost experts on how T.V. ratings are measured by Neilsen Media, etc. Patrick joins Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com and host T.J. Rives to give tremendous insight into how it all works with people meters, even the new portable ones, to measure audience for advertisers.
The guys also discuss the "out of home factor" in bumping up the audience numbers that we've seen over the years, but even that measurement may not be taking into account the full amount of people that are actually watching things like the NFL, college football, the NBA and even an occasional event like the World Cup soccer.
Patrick also give some assessment on how the World Cup Final with Argentina against defending champ France will do in the morning on Fox Sports as part of a December NFL Sunday weekend.
He also has more on the displaced schedules of the NFL on Christmas Eve and the College Football Playoff for New Year's Eve, too.

    Show notes

If you though picking the best of a season was touch, how about these of a year which included some 40 guests. Every interview I did boasted great stories but these 6 stood out: There was Mike North, a pioneer in all sports radio in Chicago and a current voice, Mark Silverman from ESPN 1000 who shared his bout with cancer.. Thom Brennaman shared his difficult road back to broadcasting after a gay slur cost him his broadcasting career. Will Perdue, a four time NBA champion (three with the Bulls) discussed the various NBA coaches he played under. Hub Arkush, who recently suffered a severe brain and heart condition but is making a great recovery, remembered how Pro Football Weekly got started and how he had to run the ship at the age of 26.
And the guy with perhaps the story of the year was Dave Revsine, host of the Big Ten Network who once sought a golf game and wound up being paired with one of the most talked about people of the last 50 years!
