Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

    Show notes

It's the latest edition of the show covering all things NFL off their "Super Wildcard Weekend" with results and some of the TV ratings. And, host T.J. Rives and Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com return to go over that and news of the week, too. The guys also have more on the "low key" and less than enthused call of Al Michaels on the NBC Saturday night winning FG by the Jaguars to cap their comeback with the L.A. Chargers. How does it compare with other famous announcers and whether they downplay calls or not? The guys also have more on the breakaway LIV Golf Series competing with the PGA Tour and them apparently landing a domestic U.S. TV deal with the CW television stations that could be announced this week. What are Jon's thoughts on that network being the right "fit" demographically and more. Finally, some "Love it or Leave it?" on Allison Williams and another female suing ESPN for losing their jobs over the Covid 19 vaccine mandate. Also, Big Ten commish Kevin Warren has left to run the Chicago Bears as their president and more. NHL Hall Of Famer Chris Chelios Part I | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Jan 17, 2023
    Show notes

Chris Chelios is living the life. He would have it no other way. Whether he’s seen at Chicago sporting events, sometimes with even more famous people like Eddie Veddar, Chelios is galavanting through life as if he’s walking on air, no skates this time. The three time Stanley Cup champ, two with Detroit and one with Montreal, is currently an analyst on NHL a games for ESPN while also serving a similar revolving role with the Chicago Blackhawks, whom he starred for in the 90s. Chelios is one of sports’ anomalies. He played for 28 years and retired at the age of 48. It’s reminiscent of Gordie Howe who played until he was 52, George Blanda, who also played until he was 48 in the NFL and current Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB Tom Brady who is 45. In part one of this two part Episode, Chelios explains why he played so long, his success with three original 6 NHL teams and how he was traded for another future hall of fame player, Denis Savard, in what was then one of the biggest trades in league history. Georgia Blowout Hurts ESPN + NFL Regular Season Concludes/"Wildcard Weekend" Set And More | Sports Media Watch Podcast Jan 11, 2023
    Show notes

It's another edition of the show, as host T.J. Rives and Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com are ready to go over the Georgia Bulldogs romp over TCU in the College Football Playoff title game Monday night and how much it hurt ESPN that the game was so lopsided. Plus, the NFL week 18 concluded the regular season with some dramatic playoff implication games. And, Jon has the numbers and the historical reference on how the audience did or didn't do, especially in primetime compared to previous years? Jon also has thoughts on the Wildcard Weekend matchups, including what he thinks will be a monstrous audience number for the Monday night football game with Dallas traveling to play Tom Brady's Buccaneers. The guys also discuss Don Van Natta's of ESPN's great reporting on how the collapse and cardiac arrest of Bills player Damar Hamlin a week ago Monday in Cincinnati devolved into confusion and chaos on whether the NFL wanted the game to eventually resume or not? How motivated is ESPN to have an investigative piece on the indecision and potentially insensitivity of the powerful NFL that they are partnered with to televise games? The guys also finish with some "Love it or Leave it?" that includes the end of the DirectTV version of "NFL RedZone" Channel and host Andrew Siciliano, plus ESPN's soccer rights/broadcasters are all but gone and does Jon have interest in Tennis' first major, the U.S. Open? Monday Night Football Horror, College Football Playoff And More! | Sports Media Watch Podcast Jan 04, 2023
    Show notes

It's our first show of the new year and 2023 has already had a harrowing start. The Monday Night Football shock of Buffalo Bills player Damar Hamlin dropping to the ground in Cincinnati in cardiac arrest is the biggest topic. And, host T.J. Rives and Dr. Jon Lewis of SportsMediaWatch.com are ready to discuss it all. How well did ESPN and their Monday night crews do (or not do) with the coverage? Jon has particular high praise for Scott Van Pelt and has handling of the coverage on SportsCenter. Meanwhile, T.J. wonders why we didn't get more in the first half hour after the collapse of Hamlin from Joe Buck and Troy Aikman? Also, the guys rightfully discuss the total lack of acknowledgement in ESPN's coverage of previous famous incidents happening on a court, field, ice, etc. involving cardiac arrest in North American and even, European sports. And, hosts continuing to utter "this has never happened before" without anyone on or off camera bothering to look it up quickly and give context. The guys then talk the thrilling College Football Playoff semifinals of New Year's Eve. Those saw TCU's crazy, high scoring upset of Michigan followed by defending champion Georgia surviving another offensive bonanza of scoring and crazy plays to beat Ohio State. How do the ratings compare to previous New Year's Eve playoff games. And, what does Jon project for the Monday night Georgia-TCU title game in L.A.? Finally, some "Love it or Leave it?" covers the heroic trainers, doctors and paramedics in Cincy on the field that saved Hamlin's life Monday. And, more with the emotional day for Mississippi State Monday as they won their bowl game in Tampa, FL against Illinois in honor of fallen head coach Mike Leach.
