Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Porter Moser Oklahoma Basketball Coach | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

Oklahoma begins its second season under head coach Porter Moser tonight against Sam Houston State University. Moser is eager to improve on his maiden campaign, one in which the Sooners went 7 and 11 in conference play and wasn’t invited to a tournament.
Moser attributed that to signing 10 new players on Zoom, not meeting them until mid June and then having to play the second toughest schedule in college basketball. Welcome to a step up from the Missouri Valley Conference where Moser’s Loyola Ramblers flourished over his last 5 seasons there winning 20 or more games and of course, making the NCAA final four in 2018.
Moser could have left the campus on Chicago’s lake front after that improbable run four years ago but he waited until the time was right and that time was 2021.
In this wonderfully entertaining podcast the always effervescent Moser recalls that magic carpet ride to the final four, the ageless "Sister Jean" and the task ahead at Oklahoma, a place he says he loves just as much as Loyola.

    Show notes

Sean Grande, play-by-play voice of the Boston Celtics joins Mike Gill and Phil de Montmollin on The Announcer Schedules Podcast. Grande checks in following his recent odyssey from Boston to Milan, Italy and back to Boston to call Bellator action and the NBA in rapid succession.
In addition to detailing his recent trip to Italy, Grande touches on a variety of topics describing his life as an NBA and MMA announcer including:
Previous experiences calling MMA and traveling in Europe
How Preparation for MMA differs from other sports
    Backup/contingency plans for broadcasts
Working with longtime partner Cedric Maxwell
Favorite locales on the NBA circuit
    Broadcast locations at NBA arenas
    A 2010 encounter at a Heat-Celtics game
How the NBA schedule has evolved with back-to-back’s and road swings
In his 25th season in the NBA and now 22nd as the voice of the Boston Celtics, Sean Grande has long since cemented his status as one of the nation’s elite play-callers. Sean will be joined by Brian Scalabrine and Abby Chin on NBC Sports Boston's Celtic road games, and of course by analyst Cedric Maxwell for radio games on 98.5 The Sports Hub. Since 2001, “Grande and Max” have become one of Boston’s most popular and iconic on-air combinations, and the soundtrack of the Celtics “New Big Three Era”.
On May 20, 2013, Grande made his Major League Baseball debut, as the alternate play-by-play voice of the World Champion Boston Red Sox. It completed his cycle of broadcasting major pro sports (NBA, NFL, NHL, WNBA and MLS). A frequent national guest on ESPN’s SportsCenter, SportsNation, First Take and the the Bill Simmons Podcast, Sean will again join Marc D'Amico and Abby Chin on the Celtics original podcast From The Rafters.

He expanded even further into combat sports and back to broadcast network TV in 2017, calling world title fights as the play-by-play voice of PBConFOX, and in 2018 of Top Rank Boxing on ESPN. In 2021, he returned to Bellator and their new home, Showtime Sports.
Grande’s milestones continue to pile up. Only the legendary Johnny Most and longtime cable voice Mike Gorman have called more Celtics games. On December 3rd, 2009 in San Antonio, he called his 1000th NBA Game, joining Marv Albert and Ian Eagle as the only three to reach that plateau before the age of 40. On February 3, 2012, Grande and Max were honored pre-game at TD Garden for their 1000th game together, on December 23rd, 2022 at the Garden, they're scheduled to call #2000. After signing a multi-year Celtics extension in 2018, Grande called his 2000th NBA game in the August 2020 NBA Playoff Bubble.
His college hockey work for Fox and the NCAA Tournament garnered him three New England Emmy nominations including the 1999 Emmy for best Play-by-Play. He spent a combined 9 years calling Boston University and Boston College games, served six years as the television voice of the NCAA East Regional. But he left an indelible image on the sport with a fourteen-year run as “Voice of the Frozen Four” on CBS Radio. His 16 NCAA Championship Games stands as a play-by-play record.
He made his national play-by-play debut at age 28, calling college football on ABC Sports.
Grande lives in Cambridge, MA with his son Jackson, and his wife, Dana Jacobson of CBS News.

Paul Sullivan Chicago Tribune Legend | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Nov 01, 2022
    Show notes

Paul Sullivan has a way with words, some that have angered players and management during his 40 years at the Chicago Tribune. Now the caretaker of the prestigious and historic “In the Wake of the News column” Sullivan is still writing mostly about baseball, a beat he covered for some 30 years. He’s seen a lot of bad baseball in Chicago but also chronicled the The White Sox first World Series championship in 88 years and the Cubs in 108! “Sully” as he’s best known has had his run-ins with such renowned players as Sammy Sosa and Frank Thomas and once had the Cubs temperamental pitcher Carlos Zambrano offer a Milwaukee baseball security person $100,000 to kill him!
All in a days work or in this case, a sterling career, one that has seen Sullivan cop the Illinois sportswriter of the year award 3 times and the prestigious Ring Lardner award for excellence in sports journalism.
During this very entertaining podcast, Sullivan reveals how he was once a bellboy at the famous Drake Hotel in Chicago where he carried bags for Bull Cosby and was an extra in the movie, Continental Divide with John Belushi, parts of which were shot at the Drake. He also discusses his relationship with Sammy Sosa whom he won’t vote for the hall of fame but believes the Cubs should honor him, something current management has thus far refused to do.

    Lisa Byington Milwaukee Bucks TV P X P Announcer | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 26, 2022
    Show notes

From a two sports athlete to a multi sport announcer. Lisa Byington doesn’t prefer to be called a trailblazer but understands why she’s been given that designation. Being the first female to call an NCAA tournament basketball game to becoming the first to be the lead voice of an NBA team, Byington, in fact, has blazed a trail for others.
She starred in basketball and soccer at Northwestern but her true passion was broadcasting. And after beginning her career in the second smallest TV market in the country Byington eventually landed at the Big ten Network but also worked for such other networks as Fox Sports, CBS, Turner and ESPN. She also called soccer in the Olympics and the World Cup.
Byington identifies her role models as her parents who are teachers and who advised her to chase whatever dream she wanted to chase. That advise has certainly paid off for Byington who is also the voice of the 2021 WNBA champion Chicago Sky.
