Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Ron Rivera Washington Commanders Coach | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 11, 2022
    Show notes

Whether you call him “Riverboat Ron” or “Chico” Ron Rivera is proud to be head coach of one of the NFL’s most controversial teams. From issues surrounding owner Daniel Synder to a name change given to one of the league’s most prominent franchises, Rivera has tried to navigate the Commanders to respectability. When they come to Soldier Field Thursday night to face the Chicago Bears, it will be like old home week for Rivera who was a member of the Bears only Super Bowl championship team in 1985 and their defensive coordinator from 2004-2006.
Rivera’s Commanders have struggled since he took over in 2020 but before that had a great run with the Carolina Panthers taking them to the Super Bowl and twice being named coach of the year!
An army brat ( his father was a Puerto Rican commissioned officer in the US Army) Rivera spent time in Germany, Panama and Washington DC.
Now he’s back in the nation’s capitol and hoping his Commanders can upend the Bears this Thursday Night.

    Show notes

On the latest edition of our show, we've got everything from health concerns for two of football's most known and popular studio analysts to how college football and the NFL are faring in recent ratings and then, to some debate about NBA theme music past and soon to be, present, too.
It's all on the "SportsMediaWatch.com Podcast" where host T.J. Rives and Dr. Jon Lewis (aka "Paulsen") from the site are ready to discuss those topics.
Jon gives his thoughts on the mainstay Corso not being on the "College Gameday" set this past week due to a health issue at Clemson, S.C. And, he and T.J. discuss his and Kirk Herbstreit's longevity for that Saturday pre game show? The guys also talk about NFL hall of famer Terry Bradshaw's admission that he's battling cancer while still staying in his role on Fox NFL Sunday's pregame and halftime shows, too.
The guys also discuss ratings in both college football from the Alabama influence in primetime vs. others. And, they talk Thursday night NFL Football early ratings on Amazon Prime and how that compares to what network TV has for the games previously. Jon also has some ratings predictions for this weekend.
We have more on Showtime Sports hiring longtime NBA reporter/host Rachel Nichols who was fired in a controversy over comments she made about colleague Maria Taylor being given consideration to take her NBA studio hosting job without merit.
And, finally, in the "Love it or Leave it?' the guys go over the NBA on ESPN theme and compare it to other NBA television themed music over the years/decades, too.

Will Perdue Former Chicago Bulls Player- Now Broadcaster | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 04, 2022
    Show notes

He’s chronicling a Chicago Bulls renaissance while once being part of their dynasty! Will Perdue appears much more comfortable analyzing these Bulls as he was being part of their for first three-peat. He faced plenty of derision and a fist from Michael Jordan during his playing days. Commonplace he claimed. It happened during many practices though all that volatility made the Bulls what they were. 30 years later, the 7 footer fits in nicely as part of a three man crew that analyzes the present day Bulls. Perdue likes the team but not having Lonzo Ball available (he missed the last three months of last season and underwent another knee surgery last week) will stymie this talented group.
It’s interesting to note Perdue was interested in the media field while attending Vanderbilt where he was the SEC player and athlete of the year. He actually did some broadcast work in Chicago while still playing for the San Antonio Spurs, a team he was traded to for the irascible Dennis Rodman.
Meanwhile, Perdue enjoys watching his son compete in college lacrosse and he might be the tallest player going. He stands 6 feet 7!
