Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Former Major Leaguer/Now TBS TV Analyst Curtis Granderson | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Aug 01, 2023
    Show notes

Curtis Granderson has his hands full these days. He juggles a schedule including his pre and post assignment for TBS’s Tuesday night baseball along with the post season, his role as president of the Players Alliance, his responsibilities with the baseball and educational academy and the GrandKids Foundation. All of this fashioned during and after an excellent 16 year career playing for 7 teams while hitting 344 homers and driving in almost a thousand runs!
Granderson began his career with the Detroit Tigers but he also made stops in New York with both the Yankees and Mets yet never played for his home town teams, The Cubs or White Sox. He said he would have loved that yet he’s not disappointed because it might have been difficult. Every time he came to town there were friends, tickets and so many things to do he would wind up exhausted after a series.
“The reason I say no is part of it is after that two, three or four game series in town playing one of the two teams I would be so exhausted because I was seeing everyone and doing so many things," he says on the show.
Granderson lives very close to the University of Illinois at Chicago baseball field, named in his honor him after he donated five million dollars to build it. It was a way to also help kids in the area have the experiment of playing on a college field.
"I wanted the kids in the area an opportunity to play, practice and train on a college campus.”
To say the least, Granderson is not only a citizen of Chicago but to many communities and the game of baseball.
His story is part of the long list of great guests on "Tell Me A Story I Don't Know" and make sure to get more great episodes on the Last Word on Sports Media Podcast feed through Apple Podcasts, Google, Spotify, etc.!

    Show notes

It's the latest edition of the show that takes a close, insightful and humorous look at sports media. And, we're ready to "tackle" Aaron Rodgers and Jets headed to NFL Films' "Hard Knocks" soon. Plus, what about the sensational story of media leaks about disgraced Raiders coach Jon Gruden and how it intertwines with Daniel Snyder being forced to sell the Washington Commanders? That and more on the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast"Host T.J. Rives is back to go over the topics above with Ken Fang of Awful Announcing and Jonathan Grella, former Tampa Bay Buccaneers and LIV Golf Series media executive.Grella in specific is a diehard Jets fan and has his thoughts on them being on the Max show for the next few weeks. While Fang wonders if this will be a more sanitized and therefore boring edition? There's talk of the ratings success of the U.S. women's national soccer team and their bid to "3 peat" in the Women's World Cup? It's certainly scoring for Fox Sports in the ratings, but will time displacement hurt them also? And, switching to college football and TV rights, etc. what about the Pac12 and are they doomed behind the SEC, Big Ten, ACC, etc., no matter what they do?It's all part of the "Last Word on Sports Media" podcast and make sure to follow and subscribe on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!And stay engaged with all the content at www.lastwordonsports.com/podcasts

    Jonathan Hood Of ESPN 1000 Chicago | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Jul 25, 2023
    Show notes

He’s the funny man of Chicago sports radio. But Jonathan Hood, aka:J Hood, is more than just laughs. He’s a student of the media and actually taught it at one of Chicago’s media schools. A 30 year veteran who began his career as an intern, Hood’s career has mushroomed into one as a co-host on ESPN 1000 in Chicago where he partners with another long time veteran, David Kaplan.
“I was able to get an internship there and then being able to be part of it, it’s a little bit interesting.” Much more than a little bit interesting. Hood has morphed into one of most likable and funniest hosts on the air.
Hood’s knowledge of the sports scene along with some of outrageously funny impressions adds some spice to any show he’s been part and he’s been part of several.
Hood grew up weened on television and not only comedy shows but the evening news. It gave him a template of what it’s like to be well rounded. Hood also does a podcast entitled “Under the Hood” along with being the voice of UIC (the university of Illinois at Chicago) basketball and baseball.
He also spent five years teaming up with the late Jeff Dickerson doing a national show for ESPN Radio and were on the air the day Kobe Bryant died. It was a very trying time for Hood but he’s managed to carve out a very successful career and would love one day to become a program director.
