Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Chicago Sports Talk Legend Dan Bernstein Part 1 | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Jun 27, 2023
    Show notes

There are some very talented, popular and controversial sports talk show hosts scattered across the country.
Dan Bernstein is one of them and for the last 28 has entertained, infuriated, challenged, ridiculed but maintained a very sizable and loyal audience. You don’t exactly do that by accident. Then again, Bernstein was a different breed. A brainy yet brash grad from Duke university, ‘Bernsy,' as he’s best known, can talk about anything from sports to fishing, TV and eating! One his favorite subjects is food.
“I started enjoying food before it became its own industry.” Bernstein is an unabashed foodie but there are limits. “Restaurants are too expensive!” That doesn’t stop him from discussing it on the air and particularly one of his favorite places, The Waffle House.
He’s mellowed over the years from a guy who blistered certain callers to one who simply has matured over time. But he still offers impressions of other famous sports figures and he’s pretty darn good at it. Matter of fact while at Duke, he won a Dick Vitale impersonation contest.
And it was at Duke where Bernstein was part of the schools drama department where he concentrated on American comedy and humor. It’s very evident in just about every show he does. He also discovered a campus cable station. It was then he began his venture into the sports business. He worked professionally in Rockford, Illinois for 3 years before landing his big break at WSCR which back then was Sportsradio 820. It’s been 670 The Score for over 20 years.
This is the first of a two part episode and in part two, Bernstein delves into his spectacular successful relationship with Terry Boers, one of the station’s originals. Their partnership lasted a then record 17 years. Part two drops on July 3rd.

    NBC Sports Chicago's Chuck Garfien | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Jun 13, 2023
    Show notes

Chuck Garfien grew up a Chicago White Sox fan. Now he’s hosting a pre and post game show with the manager who guided them to a World Series title in 2005. Garfien could never imagine working with the very popular Ozzie Guillen and their chemistry was magic from the very beginning Their shows can at times be better than the team on the field which started the season a woeful 7 and 21. No matter. Garfien is having the time of his life, this after working in 7 TV markets in 7 years! One of them was Bristol Connecticut where he was an original member of ESPN News in 1996. “I was so not ready for that job” Garfien said emphatically. “I was a 'single A' player called up to the big leagues. I went from doing 3 to 4 minute sportscasts to solo anchoring 3 to 4 hour shows!"In this wildly entertaining podcast Garfien also recalls how he was fired from a job because the wife of the station’s general manager didn’t like him or when he got hired in another market thanks to a story about uphill skiing ( yes, uphill skiing) and a guy doing so dressed as Elvis Presley.
There’s plenty more great stories to hear on this edition.
