Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

Former Bears Great Now Chicago Sports Radio Star Tom Waddle Part II | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Sep 05, 2023
    Show notes

Tom Waddle figured he might be headed to Wall Street after graduating from Boston College despite being one of its all time leading receivers. But he managed to hook on with the Chicago Bears, became one of its most popular players which led to his second career in radio and TV and he remains one of Chicago’s most popular players albeit, behind a microphone. He’s spent the last 16 years partnering with Marc Silverman on ESPN 1000 where the “Waddle and Silvy” show is the longest running sports radio show in the city.
In part two of this wonderfully entertaining and informative podcast, Waddle remembers the trials and tribulations of his broadcast career while also discussing the present day Chicago Bears. They’re coming off a 3 and 14 season so one figures there’s only one place to go and that’s up. But Waddle cautions thirsty Bears fans it’s not a playoff team just yet. “I’m optimistic but I’m not one who believes hey, with a couple of breaks here or there we can be playing in the NFC Championship game. To win five games would show something went drastically wrong.”
He also says Justin Fields must make the next step to become a better passing quarterback.

    Show notes

On the newest edition of the show, host T.J. Rives is back to discuss the latest in Sports Media coverage, including the conclusion of something he doesn't watch- the Little League World Series and he explains why. Plus, why Turner and their NHL coverage got a good free agent acquisition and a special guest is also aboard on the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast!"
First up, George Ofman, host of the "Tell me a story I don't know" podcast on this feed, is back on this show. George has his brand new season 9 beginning this week with former Chicago Bear wide receiver turned Chicago sports radio huge personality Tom Waddle. George also has more on the situation in Chicago with ailing former Bears defensive lineman Steve McMichael, who is just recently named finalist for the Pro Football Hall of Fame. McMichael is bravely battling ALS, but is in the last stages and there's an outpouring of love and sympathy in the market. George also has more on his upcoming guests for this season on his shows.
Next there's also more on the controversial new way in which Amazon Prime wants to calculate their ratings for Thursday Night Football for greater viewership and why their competitors like Fox, CBS, NBC and ESPN are angered that their audience measurement by Nielsen won't be the same?
And, the college football season is beginning in earnest this weekend with some large interest for several important early games, including one that T.J. will be broadcasting on Saturday night, as well.

Former Bears Great Now Chicago Sports Radio Star Tom Waddle Part I | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Aug 29, 2023
    Show notes

Tom Waddle says he never takes for granted who he was as a player with the Chicago Bears. He wasn’t their best wide receiver but he overcame size and speed to become one their most effective and popular players. Now 56, Waddle has turned that popularity into a very successful career in the media culminating with his longtime partnership with Marc Silverman on ESPN 1000 in Chicago.
But getting here took plenty of grit and determination. Waddle attended Boston College where he finished first on the schools all time reception list. You would think that got him drafted in the NFL but it didn’t. His agent though, convinced the Bears to sign him and he became a fan favorite making big time catches under head coaches Mike Ditka and Dave Wanndstedt.
“I can’t begin to tell you how appreciative I am to the Chicago Bears for the opportunity they gave me, to Mike Ditka for the opportunity he gave me," Waddle tells the show.
Waddle grew up in Cincinnati where he watched his Reds win back to back World Series in the mid 70s. He remains a big fan of the team despite his 35 years living and thriving in Chicago.
Part one of this enthralling episode goes further in examine how Waddle made it in both College and the pros. Part two will examine his rise to fame in the Chicago and what he thinks of Justin Fields and the current Bears team.

Best of Season Eight Part Two | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Aug 22, 2023
    Show notes

The best of season eight part two offered a deli style menu. A taste of some talk show hosts, a slice of former major league players, a few ounces of a big league team market guru and a heaping portion of a college football coach. Our guests include, among others, Bret Bielema, the head man at Illinois who remembered his time with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Brooks Boyer, a former captain of the Notre Dame basketball team and currently the senior VP of sales and marketing for the Chicago White Sox, recalled when he was a promotions guy with the Chicago Bulls and a unique encounter with Michael Jordan that involves championship champagne.
Curtis Granderson hit 344 homers with 7 teams but he’s been giving back to the game as the president of the Players Alliance along with working with his foundations, GrandKids, as he tries to help them enjoy the game he excelled at.
Doug Glanville also had a solid big league career and he’s giving back in the classroom where he teaches a course on Sports and Society at the University of Connecticut. “It started out in how we interact and engage society through the media but wound up being the history of sports activism as you move to current events,” Glanville told the show.
Dan Bernstein has been working at WSCR the Score for 28 years, most as a show host where he remembered how he and the legendary Terry Boers teamed up for 17 years.Jonathan Hood teamed up the late Jeff Dickerson on many occasions but for 5 years they worked a Saturday show on ESPN network radio and they happen to be on the day Kobe Bryant died.
Tell me a story I don’t know is partnered with Last Word on Sports Media Podcast and is proudly presented by Mr. Duct. Mr duct cleaning.com. New episodes debut every Tuesday and come August 29th, the start of season nine!
