Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

A taste of some talk show hosts, a slice of former major league players, a few ounces of a big league team market guru and a heaping portion of a college football coach. Our guests include, among others, Bret Bielema, the head man at Illinois who remembered his time with Bill Belichick and the New England Patriots. Brooks Boyer, a former captain of the Notre Dame basketball team and currently the senior VP of sales and marketing for the Chicago White Sox, recalled when he was a promotions guy with the Chicago Bulls and a unique encounter with Michael Jordan.

Doug Glanville also had a solid big league career and he’s giving back in the classroom where he teaches a course on Sports and Society at the University of Connecticut.
Dan Bernstein has been working at WSCR the Score for 28 years, most as a show host where he remembered how he and the legendary Terry Boers teamed up for 17 years.Jonathan Hood teamed up the late Jeff Dickerson on many occasions but for 5 years they worked a Saturday show on ESPN network radio and they happen to be on the day Kobe Bryant died.

Louisville/ACC Status With Mark Ennis + ESPN Announcer Moves & Kevin Brown Re-instated With Andrew Bucholtz of Awful Announcing | Last Word Aug 16, 2023
    Show notes

It's our latest edition of the show covering several interesting topics. Those include the shaky status in conference re-alignment of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), what about personnel moves by ESPN particularly with their NBA announcer lineups and also, the Orioles announcer Kevin Brown is re-instated too. We're ready to talk it all on the "Last Word on Sports Media Podcast" with host T.J. Rives. He first welcomes Mark Ennis of ESPN Radio Louisville, who has insight on the ACC mess with Florida State and Clemson wanting out and what about the Cardinals situation, as well? Mark and T.J. also kid around about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers QB battle with Baker Mayfield in the mix, as well. Then, hear from Andrew Bucholtz of Awful Announcing, who has thoughts on the ESPN announcer moves and whether the new team of Mike Breen, Doc Rivers and Doris Burke will be a good fit or not? And, Andrew has tremendous insight on his/his colleagues at Awful Announcing reporting on Baltimore announcer Kevin Brown being indefinitely suspended, but then, being reinstated to call their games after their story and the outcry that followed. Plus, was Brown forced to help the team with his statement to get back on the air and how good were his calls on Sunday in the Orioles dramatic win in Seattle after all of this?Hear it all on the 'Last Word on Sports Media" podcast and make sure to follow/subscribe to this feed on Apple Podcasts, Spotify, Google, etc.!!And, stay engaged with all the content at www.lastwordonsports.com/podcasts

Illinois Football Coach Bret Bielema | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Aug 08, 2023
    Show notes

Remember the killer Bs? Bagwell and Biggio of the Houston Astros? Bret Biliema takes that to another level. The head football coach at the University of Illinois has two brothers whose first names start with B. Same with his sisters and two daughters. But first names, he claims, matters if you build value to it.
And clearly, Bielema has built plenty of value. Now in his third season at Champaign, Bielema wants to build off an 8 and 4 season. His track record indicates he likely will. “What we have to do is strive to get ourselves better. My first year when we went 5 and 7 I said I didn’t come here to go 5 and 7 and to be quite honest I didn’t come here to go 8 and 5 (they lost the bowl game). But a big step in our program is not necessarily what it takes to win, it’s just the desire to not have failure," Bielema tells the show.
This is a man who took over Barry Alvarez’s program at Wisconsin and became the first coach in school to win at least 8 games in his first season. After 7 years of success in Madison Bielema left for Arkansas and managed three bowl trips in 5 seasons. He then spent two seasons as an assistant with the New England Patriots whose head coach happened to be Bill Belichick. Here we go with the Bs again.
Bielema carefully sidestepped the scandal at Northwestern offering to make sure he always on top of everything that touches his players lives.
This energetic and popular coach says he doesn’t want to leave Illinois and with good reason: he paid some six million annually.
    We’ll see.
