Last Word On Sports Media Podcast

The Last Word On Sports Media Podcast is a sports media analysis and commentary show hosted by veteran broadcaster T.J. Rives. It explores the business, television production, legal affairs, personalities, and behind-the-scenes decision-making that shape the American sports media ecosystem.
Broadcasters, public relations executives, and network producers who want to keep up with industry trends, ratings, and network movements along with fans who enjoy analyzing game calls, officiating decisions, camera coverage, broadcast rights, and network programming will enjoy this podcast featuring content beyond just the scores on the field.

    • Coverage of major TV networks (ESPN, NBC, CBS, FOX, ABC) and streaming platforms (Amazon Prime, Netflix), including broadcast booth reviews, ratings breakdowns, and production quality.
    • Off-Field & Media Controversies: Discussions on newsroom conflicts of interest, journalist ethics, legal injunctions, and off-field scandals affecting teams and media figures.
    • Officiating & Rules Analysis: Expert breakdowns of replay decisions, stadium clock discrepancies, and officiating transparency.
    • League & Business Affairs: Coverage of college football realignment, conference politics, player NIL/roster disputes, and financial crises like team or league bankruptcy filings.

T.J. Rives regularly brings on high-profile guests—such as former team executives, public relations strategists, sports media critics, and veteran broadcasters—who provide firsthand insider perspective. Rather than focusing purely on standard game recaps, the show evaluates how stories are reported, who is telling them, and the media dynamics at play. The podcast quickly reacts to emerging, real-time storylines—ranging from viral officiating audio leaks and network power outages to legal disputes—offering sharp analysis while news is actively unfolding.

    Boston Bruins Radio P x P Judd Sirott Tease | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 09, 2023
    Show notes

How many of us wind up doing what we want in life. Judd sirott is. The Chicago native is about to begin his 8th season as the radio voice of the Boston Bruins and while his goal was to do the same for his hometown Blackhawks, doing by play of hockey is something Sirott wanted to do as a youngster. He called 12 seasons of the Chicago Wolves of the AHL and was also the pre and post game host for the Blackhawks while also holding a similar role with the Cubs where he also did some play by play.
Sirott took a more philosophical view of last seasons monumental collapse of the Bruins who fashioned the NHL’s best ever regular season record only to lose in the first round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs to the Florida Panthers after holding a 3-1 series lead. He said you have to be prepared for things like this since it’s not often a team that wins the President’s Trophy for best regular season record completes the mission.
But Sirott appears to have completed the mission of landing an NHL job and with an original 6 team, no less. His audition for the job came against the Blackhawks so it makes sense the Bruins will open their season October 11th against, the Blackhawks!

Carmen Vitali Of FoxSports.com Talks NFC North And Media Messes + CFB And NFL Remain Ratings Kings, etc | Last Word On Sports Media Podcast Oct 04, 2023
    Show notes

It's a new month and a new edition of the "Last Word On Sports Media Podcast," as host T.J. Rives returns to go over the latest in coverage, TV ratings, and more.
This week T.J. also welcomes Carmen Vitali of FoxSports.com's coverage of the NFL and specifially the NFC North. How and why are the Bears so bad on the field and just as dysfunctionally bad off it? Carmen has more on that, on Jordan Love replacing Aaron Rodgers, and are we looking at numerous Sunday night and Monday night games with bad North teams being flexed out? Carmen brings vast knowledge and insight into it all.
Then, T.J. plays some "Love it or Leave it?" about the massive NFL ratings continuing and why blowouts don't seem to really affect things that much on Sunday afternoon? But, what about the college TV numbers for Colorado and Deion Sanders vs. Georgia on CBS' numbers and Notre Dame in Primetime too?
That and why some of the Ryder Cup Golf coverage on NBC Sports was good, as alwwys, but some of what they did was "underhanded" to the viewer too.

Former Dodgers GM Ned Colletti | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 03, 2023
    Show notes

Most people might remember Ned Colletti as the General Manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers. But this most accomplished veteran was also a PR director and contract negotiator for the Chicago Cubs, Assistant General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, analyst on Dodgers’ TV, New Times best selling author, instructor at Pepperdine university and oh, did I mention a scout for the San Jose Sharks? Yes, Colletti is one of a handful of people who have worked professionally in two sports. “First time in my life to think about ok, do I change a course, do I change a path?”
Thanks to the consistent pestering from then GM Doug Wilson, a player he used to cheer for when Wilson was a stellar defenseman for the chicago Blackhawks in the 80s did Colletti finally said yes to.
Ned Colletti remembers when Andre Dawson came to Cubs camp as a free agent in 1987 and he and his agent gave GM Dallas Green a chance to sign the great star to a blank check. “Dallas wasn’t happy about it. He was being put on the spot.” But they signed Dawson to a $500,000 deal plus incentives and all he did was win the National League’s most valuable player award for a last place team!
Colletti also dealt with the notorious Barry Bonds. “ I found him to be one of the most interesting people I’ve ver been around. Very engaging when he wanted to be. There was a side of him the media never saw and he didn’t care.”
Colletti spends his time traveling, and a lot up and down the west coast and Las Vegas. Plus, there are his myriad classes he teaches at Pepperdine.”I wasn’t a very good student in high school.” Years later….”I’m giving the commencement speech at Pepperdine!”
Nearing 70, Colletti still loves what he does.”I’m on the back nine. I might be on 18, I might be on 17, I might be on 15 but I’m definitely on the back nine of life.”
Considering what Colletti continues to accomplish, I’ll select hole 15 and eventually meet him on the 19th!

Former Dodgers GM Ned Colletti Tease | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Oct 02, 2023
    Show notes

When interviewing Ned Colletti for my podcast I asked him what he hasn’t done. The man has been part of management of three Major League teams, an NHL franchise, been a TV analyst, wrote a best selling book and teaches classes at Pepperdine University. All of this while Colletti tries to balance a a family including grandchildren while traveling from San Jose to Los Angeles and Phoenix. But what Colletti has proven during his remarkable career is he’s a tireless but incredibly enthusiastic professional.
The Chicago native began his career with the Cubs and ascended to PR director and contract negotiator. From there he became assistant General Manager of the San Francisco Giants, GM of the Los Angels Dodgers and eventually their TV analyst and currently his role with San Jose Sharks and Pepperdine. He’s been involved with such luminaries as Andre Dawson, Ryne Sandberg, Harry Caray, Brian Sabean, Barry Bonds and Doug Wilson just to mention a few.
Colletti might be most proud of giving the commencement speech at Pepperdine admitting he wasn’t much of a student in high school. But he learned what it took be one of the tops at everything he did….and still does!

Mike Mulligan Of WSCR "The Score" Radio | Tell Me A Story I Don't Know Sep 26, 2023
    Show notes

For over a decade now Mike Mulligan has been co-hosting a popular sports talk morning show on WSCR 670 The Score, first with fellow writer Brian Hanley and then another fellow scribe, David Haugh. The shows overcame the ratings lead of Mike and Mike, then the highly successful show on ESPN pitting Mike Greenberg with Mike Golic.
But “Mully,” as he’s best known, had been doing radio since the late 80s while also covering the Bulls and their first three-peat, then the Bears. He laughed when it was noted the coaches he covered were the studious Phil Jackson and the enthusiastic and gifted story teller, Dave Wannstedt. But balancing both writing and doing morning radio became too much so he gave up the writing job.
Mulligan is up every weekday morning at 3. “It’s just a discipline. You just have to make sure you’re monitoring everything that happens but you’re also making sure getting five, six hours of sleep.”
The Bears are the number one team in Chicago and recently went through a stunning day that included the mysterious resignation of defensive coordinator Alan Williams and quarterback Justin Fields blaming part of his difficulties on coaching. It was fuel for fire for Mully and Haugh and everyone else in town. But Mully is also and avowed White Sox fan who has seen the team have arguably its worst season ever both on and off the field. But, as Mully has said often, “I’m living the dream.” Not bad for a native Chicagoan who gets to talk about the exploits of the city’s teams on a daily basis.
"Tell me a story I don’t know" is partnered with Last Word on Sports Media Podcast and sponsored by Mr. Duct. (mrductcleaning.com). And “Tell Me a Story I Don’t Know: Conversations With Chicago Sports Legends” is now available for pre-sale on Amazon books.
