    It’s Not About the Alcohol

Would you like to reduce your alcohol consumption by about 80 percent? Become the version of you who can just “take it or leave it” so that you can enjoy drinking socially without relying on alcohol to manage your stress, anxiety, loneliness and boredom when you’re by yourself?

Most high achieving women assume over-drinking is caused by a lack of willpower–or worse, the incurable disease of “alcoholism.” So they beat themselves up and avoid asking for help because they feel ashamed and out of control.

Whether you’re a daily drinker who can’t break the habit, or you’re still going to sobriety meetings even though you don’t drink anymore, the real problem is that you don’t trust yourself.

Which means it’s not about the alcohol. It’s about your relationship with yourself.

Colleen Freeland is a a mindful drinking coach helping professional women learn how drinking less (or not at all) is actually a superpower, even when the idea of giving up the only thing that helps them quiet their mind feels impossible.

The solution to alcohol use disorder is a FEELING. If you felt comfortable in your own skin and at ease in your life, you would drink like someone who is comfortable and at ease!

Join me each week for holistic, evidence-based strategies to fix your dopamine deficit, regulate your nervous system, cure imposter syndrome, manage sugar cravings, improve your sleep and reclaim your mental health so you no longer have the urge to escape your own body.

Get happy, not sober. Because happy people don’t drink themselves into a stupor.

Break your night-time eating habits for good--with hypnotherapist Rita Black Sep 14, 2023
    Show notes

Hypnotherapist Rita Black is returning to the show to address the difficult issue many of us encounter when we take a break from drinking--Night Time Eating!

Night-time eating is more than an urge…it's a pattern. Which is why trying to use discipline to "not eat" or "eat less" doesn't work. Your subconscious mind has an agenda that overrides willpower.

Rita explains the patterns of "three" and how our brain will agitate us until we complete the cycle. And the only way to regain control is to create a new pattern that aligns with a stronger and more powerful self image.

Instead of seeing yourself as someone who "struggles with overeating," you must become a person who "prefers to fast from after dinner until breakfast." Because the easiest way to break an unwanted habit is to replace it with a desired IDENTITY.

Register here to learn how to break through the weight struggle cycle so you can lose weight consistently and permanently with Rita's Shift Weight Mastery Process on September 19th @ 9am or 5 pm PST. It's COMPLETELY FREE.

If you're ready to take a break from alcohol OR you're feeling trapped in lifelong sobriety because you identify as a recovering alcoholic, get the exact steps you'll need to take to reclaim control over your life. Because you don't have to live by other people's rules. Pursing happiness instead of sobriety is the only way to feel passionate, purposeful and powerful again.

Recovering from anger--with Kim Roy Sep 11, 2023
    Show notes

Kim Roy has never had a drinking problem. And yet, she identifies as a woman in recovery–from anger.

Friends referred to her as "spicy Kim" because she had a short fuse. Righteous anger was hard-wired into her personality--motivating her to right the wrongs in life. In many ways, she liked her bold aggressiveness. The ability to "cut the crap" and "tell it like it is" served her well.

But the collision of two major stress events in her life sent her into a tailspin. And when her husband gave her an ultimatum, she finally had the courage to ask for help.

There's a saying that if you're not managing your emotions, they're managing you. Kim decided to stop suppressing the anger and rage that were eating her alive and figure out how to heal.

Kim shares her journey of transformation from being a victim of her emotions to an emotionally sober badass.

The bridge between deprivation and liberation--with. Mary Wagstaff Aug 28, 2023
    Show notes

Many of us quit drinking because it's not working for us anymore. We feel depleted and deprived.

Which is why periods of sobriety can feel like such a relief. When you finally break the cycle of indulgence and deprivation, your eyes are opened to how much more there is to life, to yourself and to your relationships.

Once you realize that alcohol blocks the source of your own wisdom and intuition, your focus shifts to the bigger picture. Your bandwidth for greatness begins to expand. Saying "no" to a drink feels like saying "yes" to yourself.

Sobriety is a personal revolution. It gives you the freedom to choose--who you are, what you want and how to move forward. After years of living under the oppressive belief that you aren't capable of controlling yourself, liberation is like a new pair of shoes...you gotta break them in.

Join Mary Wagstaff and I for a gentle and enlightening conversation about how to apply the sacred gift we give ourselves...sobriety.

Ep63 | Trauma and the secret lessons of shame Aug 21, 2023
    Show notes

Trauma is ANY experience that leaves a physical or emotional wound. Which means, we ALL have trauma.

Trauma is a learning process in the brain…it changes how we interact with the world. Painful events cause us to conclude that we are unlovable, worthless or insignificant. And so we feel rejected, unworthy, stupid and wrong. We internalize the idea that something is wrong with us.

Trauma changes who we think we are—erasing joy and causing us to forget what it means to be fully alive. Our dreams, talents, hopes and self-worth are replaced by fear, anxiety, guilt and despair.

You can distinguish between trauma and truth by learning to identify the fingerprints of shame…when it's active and how it's affecting you. So you can stop reacting to the pain of the past and reclaim your power, which is your birthright.

The Perfectionist's Guide to Nervous System Regulation with Michelle Grosser Aug 14, 2023
    Show notes

Do you pride yourself on your ability to "tuck your crazy?" Would you rather boil in rage or drown in overwhelm than be exposed as a Drama Queen?

We're conditioned from an early age to suppress inconvenient feelings. Whoever can put up with the most sh!t and still smile wins.

My guest today is Michelle Grosser–a recovering perfectionist and nervous system regulation coach. She shares how her fear of being seen as "emotional" crippled her ability to function as a full time litigator, part time law professor, wife and mother of two babies.

She discovered that "doing too much" wasn't the problem. It was feeling too little. Prioritizing the care of her nervous system didn't require her to let go of her dreams. It enhanced her ability to achieve them.

    In this episode, Michelle shares:

    • How to pinpoint the REAL source of your stress

    • It's not emotions that are so scary. It's your fear of losing control.

    • How to soothe your nervous system with 10-minute /day habits.

    • The difference between mindset and somatic tools and which work best.

Let's talk about drinking alcohol in recovery Aug 07, 2023
    Show notes

The sober community promotes the idea that alcohol reduces your ability to control yourself. And that alcoholism is an incurable disease that can only be managed with complete abstinence.

The "alcoholic" identity is a lifetime commitment to a DISABILITY.

Which is why quitting feels so complicated. You're caught between two extremes, both of which rob you of autonomy and self-determination.

But research shows that the BELIEF in this disease-model of addiction is far more dangerous than alcohol itself. People formally exposed in treatment to the notion that they are powerless addicts are 9 times more likely to binge and relapse.

In fact, brain scans of people in recovery from addiction show cognitive processing returns to normal within 6-12 months. Furthermore, their capacity for self-regulation EXCEEDS that of people who've never overcome an addiction.

It's uncomfortable to talk about drinking in recovery. Because we're taught that addiction is caused by alcohol. It's far more accurate to say that addiction is caused by the BELIEF that you can't control yourself.

You don't have to live by other people's rules.

The role childhood trauma plays in addiction--interview with Jess Jul 31, 2023
    Show notes

Our sense of safety as children was dependent on our caregivers. We needed to make the adults around us happy. We let our parents tell us what to think and how to feel. Because that kept us safe.

And so, we learned how to regulate their nervous system instead of our own.

For many of us, childhood traumas manifest as perfectionism and cycles of self-sabotage. Because we're managing our stress the same way we did as children. By avoiding emotional discomfort.

But (if you're lucky) there comes a day when you just can't pretend to be fine anymore. So you quietly tap out…decide to grab the low-hanging fruit and give sobriety the old college try.

Only to realize this isn't about alcohol…

Ep60: HOW to improve your relationship with yourself Jul 24, 2023
    Show notes

If you struggle with anxiety and depression, or are trying to escape the alcohol trap, you are well aware that life would be better if you were nicer to yourself.

But what does that really mean? And HOW do you like yourself if you don't actually like yourself?

In this episode, I'll start with the big picture. What are the "symptoms" of self-love? What does that look like from the outside? How does that feel on the inside?

Then I'll walk you through specific actions that will help you feel like a person worthy of her own attention. Spoiler alert–they are the same actions a counselor would suggest to improve your marriage. Spend time together. Talk to each other. Offer compliments. Do random acts of kindness.

I'll also dive into the "shadow"--what it is, what it isn't and why you need to make friends with it. Because keep your friends close and your enemies closer.

Setting an emotional goal can feel like trying to nail jello to a tree. Until. You have a vision for what you want and a road map for how to get there.

    Dealing with Drinker's Regret Jul 17, 2023
    Show notes

After years of living in denial, it's normal to have a regret hangover in early sobriety.

Just saying "I'm sober" can feel shameful. Because you're admitting that drinking was a problem. And while it's important to move forward, you still have to make peace with the past.

Unprocessed regret keeps you stuck in a cycle of stress. Avoiding your emotions leads to self-sabotage — overcompensating, enabling, not setting healthy boundaries and neglecting your own self-care.

Dealing with regret begins with "dissecting" your overwhelming emotions into distinct thoughts. So you can separate fact from fiction. Then you must change the way you respond to "episodes" of grief. Resist the urge to self-abandon. Remember this pain is temporary. Treat yourself with kindness and compassion.

Putting mistakes into perspective is how you learn. How has this experience made you a stronger person? How will this hard-earned wisdom serve you or someone else in the future?
