    It’s Not About the Alcohol

Would you like to reduce your alcohol consumption by about 80 percent? Become the version of you who can just “take it or leave it” so that you can enjoy drinking socially without relying on alcohol to manage your stress, anxiety, loneliness and boredom when you’re by yourself?

Most high achieving women assume over-drinking is caused by a lack of willpower–or worse, the incurable disease of “alcoholism.” So they beat themselves up and avoid asking for help because they feel ashamed and out of control.

Whether you’re a daily drinker who can’t break the habit, or you’re still going to sobriety meetings even though you don’t drink anymore, the real problem is that you don’t trust yourself.

Which means it’s not about the alcohol. It’s about your relationship with yourself.

Colleen Freeland is a a mindful drinking coach helping professional women learn how drinking less (or not at all) is actually a superpower, even when the idea of giving up the only thing that helps them quiet their mind feels impossible.

The solution to alcohol use disorder is a FEELING. If you felt comfortable in your own skin and at ease in your life, you would drink like someone who is comfortable and at ease!

Join me each week for holistic, evidence-based strategies to fix your dopamine deficit, regulate your nervous system, cure imposter syndrome, manage sugar cravings, improve your sleep and reclaim your mental health so you no longer have the urge to escape your own body.

Get happy, not sober. Because happy people don’t drink themselves into a stupor.

Ep 87: Tapping into emotional release from tension and intrusive thoughts (part 2) with Ann Hince Nov 28, 2023
    Show notes

What do you do when your emotions don't make sense–even to you?

Most of us do our best to stifle the urge to "freak out" or "go off" on other people. Because we either a) want to avoid the consequences or b) don't want to look crazy. So we suffer in (the very loud) silence.

Unfortunately, most of us medicate the symptoms of emotional dysregulation with prescription drugs, alcohol, pot, food or all of the above. But blaming "irrational feelings" on hormones, brain chemistry or life stress only makes them stronger.

My guest today is Ann Hince…a professional speaker, author and spiritual teacher. Her recovery from trauma and subsequent emotional dysregulation began when a doctor introduced her to tapping (the emotional freedom technique EFT).

In this episode, we will explore the transformative power of tapping, a holistic technique that can liberate your body from painful emotions so you can finally experience a profound sense of peace in your mind.

Ann shares practical tools and insights that will help you build self-awareness and overcome your fear of your own inner darkness and unspoken truths.

This episode will deepen your understanding of why using willpower to control your behavior is not a substitute for emotional wellness. Learn why it's so important to stop masking the symptoms of emotional dysregulation so that you can truly heal from emotional and physical trauma.

In Part 2 of this episode, you'll learn:

👉🏼How your thinking mind traps emotions and how to get into your feeling mind

👉🏼Why distraction is your biggest block to emotional wellness

👉🏼How to train your brain to enjoy "trauma hunting"

👉🏼How tapping can support recovery from alcohol use disorder

In Part 1 (go to episode 86) of this episode, we discussed:

👉🏼How subconscious trauma causes emotional dysregulation

👉🏼Why suppressing your "dark thoughts" gives them power

👉🏼Why tapping with positive affirmations can have disappointing results

👉🏼How to customize a tapping solution that actually works for you

Do you sometimes feel like a crazy shrew? Because even though you do your best to ignore the intrusive thoughts that are holding court in your head, you simply can't let go?

You're not alone. Most of us make an effort to "forget about it" and "think positive!🤡"… only to have that relentless negative and judgmental voice continue to poop on our parade.💩

If the affirmations and positive thinking exercises you've been practicing seem futile because you still feel defeated and stuck, there is hope.

In this episode, we will explore the transformative power of tapping, a holistic technique that can liberate your body from painful emotions so you can finally experience a profound sense of peace in your mind.

My special guest, Ann Hince, is a transformational coach specializing in the power of tapping. Ann has a unique understanding of how to help you create positive change, self-discovery and growth with simple and easy-to-use strategies.

Ep 85: How brain training can reverse "character defects"-with Mary Lou Rodriguez Nov 21, 2023
    Show notes

Does your desire to quit drinking, lose weight or start a new career feel unattainable?

The mistake most of us make when we want something to change is to focus on what we're doing wrong. Because we think beating ourselves up will improve our willpower and follow-through.

And so we delay taking action because we're waiting for the perfect time. And then we invest 110 percent of our energy to transform overnight. And when something goes wrong, we see the setback as proof that we'll never get it right.

Unfortunately, this explains why our sincere attempts to break bad habits and set new goals often end in guilt, frustration and regret.

The problem is NOT that we're inherently incapable of learning new skills. The problem is that we don't see our problems as a lack of skill. We see them as innate character defects.

And the problem with that is you simply can't outperform your beliefs about who you think you are. Your identity dictates your behavior. And your subconscious will eventually win.

My guest today is Mary Lou Rodriguez, a master hypnotherapist and brain training expert. She's here to explain how to change who you think you are by learning to think differently. In this episode, you'll learn:

👉🏼How Mary Lou overcame severe alcoholism with subconscious reprogramming

👉🏼How a "poverty mindset" can fuel addiction

👉🏼Action steps you can take NOW to start retraining your brain

Ep 84 Resolving Ambivalence (Part 5) The invisible obstacle you must overcome to enjoy being sober Nov 14, 2023
    Show notes

How do you feel when you see people on television sharing a flask around a roaring campfire, enjoying a bottle of red wine with a 5-course meal, or sliding into a steaming bubble bath with a crystal goblet of cold Chardonnay?

No matter how committed you are to drinking less or not at all, scenes that associate drinking with pleasure can trigger temptation. You may experience a burst of discontent, have an urge to finish the cake or start reconsidering your resolve to avoid alcohol.

And it's disheartening to imagine longing for "more" the rest of your life. You deserve to be happy.

But the reason you decided to quit drinking was because you had a problem. And now the story in your head is that you "can't" drink. Because you can't control yourself. And the fact that you even want to drink reinforces your inadequacy. Because you should be over this by now.

The mistake most drinkers make is to use willpower to white-knuckle through random urges for alcohol. With practice, your resistance will improve. But these moments are the weak links in your resilience.

    There's a better way.

Welcome to Part 5 of my mini-series for Resolving Ambivalence: The invisible obstacle you must overcome to enjoy being sober. In this episode, you'll learn:

🗣How to welcome temptation as an invitation to clean house in your subconscious

🗣Why you must stop judging your feelings as "right" or "wrong

🗣️How to mentally map negative emotions so you can quickly navigate to safety

Ep 83 Resolving Ambivalence (Part 4) How to break your emotional attachments to alcohol so drinking loses it's appeal Nov 14, 2023
    Show notes

How much time do you think someone needs to stay sober once the physical addiction to alcohol has been broken?

Most people quit drinking with a goal in mind. And whether they are aiming to stay sober forever or just participating in Sober October, success is measured by the number of alcohol free days.

But taking a break to simply reset your tolerance, or swearing off alcohol forever because you've surrendered to the idea that you're an alcoholic, are two sides of the same coin. Both goals are based on the idea that alcohol is bad and sobriety is good.

However, you've grown up in a culture where alcohol is intricately linked with adulthood, tribal connection and stress relief. Your brain has a built-in "Hollywood movie filter" when it comes to drinking.

Which is why no matter how good sobriety feels, you're going to at least occasionally experience feelings of longing when you think about drinking.

And the mistake most people make is to interpret those feelings to mean that either there's something wrong with you for still wanting to drink, or something wrong with the decision you made to stop drinking.

The only way to resolve your ambivalence is to make sense of your desire to drink. Stop assuming that your feelings about alcohol are true. Instead, get curious about the perspective you had when they formed.

Welcome to Part 4 of my mini-series for Resolving Ambivalence: How to break your emotional attachments to alcohol so drinking loses its appeal. In this episode, you'll learn:

🗣How to break the subconscious "rules" your brain follows when you drink

🗣Why you can't think your way out of a drinking problem

🗣️How to form new emotional attachments to sobriety

Ep 82 Resolving Ambivalence (Part 3) The mistakes you're making that trap you in the cycle of over-drinking Nov 14, 2023
    Show notes

What do you think is the hardest part of quitting drinking?

Most of us assume that declining the invitation to drink requires massive amounts of willpower. And that staying sober will feel like trying not to cough…which means there's no way we'll be able to resist the urge forever.

So you delay the announcement because you assume it's going to be difficult. You genuinely want to be successful, which requires you to wait for the "right" time.

Meanwhile, you stop making the effort to cut back. Sobriety will be your top priority and have your full attention as soon as "life eases up."

But the more often you wake up with a hangover, the more anxious you feel about quitting. Because seriously, what the hell is your problem?

The hardest part of getting sober is not suffering from an "alcohol deficiency." It's making the decision to start today. Which means your drinking problem has morphed into a thinking problem.

Welcome to Part 3 of my mini-series for Resolving Ambivalence: The mistakes you're making that trap you in the cycle of over-drinking. In this episode, you'll learn:

🗣How to leverage your anxiety and motivate yourself to quit drinking

🗣Learn why you must learn to supervise your thinking

🗣️Adjust your expectations of the change process so you never have to "start over" again

Ep 81: Resolving Ambivalence (Part 2) The secret to curing alcohol use disorder Nov 14, 2023
    Show notes

Why do you think that it's so hard to stick with your intentions to "drink like a normal" person?"

You may assume that your "off-switch" is broken or that you have an "addictive personality." Or maybe you secretly fear that you really are an alcoholic. Regardless, this is a frustrating and embarrassing problem that feels beneath you.

Most people try to escape the cycle of over-drinking by taking a break to reset your tolerance or even swearing to never drink again. Because we assume that if alcohol is the problem, then sobriety must be the solution.

But "not drinking" is not a coping skill. So once the novelty wears off, we go back to drinking or transfer our addiction to food, marijuana or work.

The bottom line is that trying to control your behavior with the 5 percent of your awareness that is conscious (instead of changing the beliefs that are causing the behavior) doesn't work.

The secret to curing alcohol use disorder is to heal the emotional disconnect that happens when you're scared to feel your own feelings.

Welcome to Part 2 of my mini-series for Resolving Ambivalence: The secret to curing alcohol use disorder. In this episode, you'll learn:

🗣The simple reframe that reveals the root cause of the problem

🗣Why psychological dependence on alcohol is so much harder to break than physical addiction

🗣️How to correct subconscious biases and become the master of your own mind.

Ep 80 Resolving Ambivalence (Part 1) Why you still want to drink and also want to stop Nov 14, 2023
    Show notes

How do you handle the emotional whiplash of knowing you should stay sober for a while but also feeling like that's unrealistic?

Ambivalence feels like climbing up to the high dive only to chicken out and refuse to jump. And then telling yourself it's not that bad and you like learning lessons the hard way–Cheers! Or secretly thinking it's actually so bad that you probably should go to rehab.

Either way, you can't deal with this today. Which temporarily solves the problem until you wake up in the middle of the night and realize you did it again.

The mistake you're making is to misinterpret your anxiety about over-drinking as a sign that something is wrong with you. That you can't trust or control yourself. Which is why the idea of change starts feeling more and more impossible.

In reality, your anxiety is a sign that you are already in the process of change. The solution is to start measuring your progress instead of making yet another plan to start over.

This is part one of my mini-series on Resolving Ambivalence. In the next five episodes, you'll learn:

🗣The secret to curing alcohol use disorder

🗣️The mistakes that trap you in the cycle of over-drinking

🗣️How to break your emotional attachment to alcohol so drinking loses its appeal
