    It’s Not About the Alcohol

Would you like to reduce your alcohol consumption by about 80 percent? Become the version of you who can just “take it or leave it” so that you can enjoy drinking socially without relying on alcohol to manage your stress, anxiety, loneliness and boredom when you’re by yourself?

Most high achieving women assume over-drinking is caused by a lack of willpower–or worse, the incurable disease of “alcoholism.” So they beat themselves up and avoid asking for help because they feel ashamed and out of control.

Whether you’re a daily drinker who can’t break the habit, or you’re still going to sobriety meetings even though you don’t drink anymore, the real problem is that you don’t trust yourself.

Which means it’s not about the alcohol. It’s about your relationship with yourself.

Colleen Freeland is a a mindful drinking coach helping professional women learn how drinking less (or not at all) is actually a superpower, even when the idea of giving up the only thing that helps them quiet their mind feels impossible.

The solution to alcohol use disorder is a FEELING. If you felt comfortable in your own skin and at ease in your life, you would drink like someone who is comfortable and at ease!

Join me each week for holistic, evidence-based strategies to fix your dopamine deficit, regulate your nervous system, cure imposter syndrome, manage sugar cravings, improve your sleep and reclaim your mental health so you no longer have the urge to escape your own body.

Get happy, not sober. Because happy people don’t drink themselves into a stupor.

Ep107: Learn how spiritual laws and universal principles can transform your life with Paul Quinton Feb 14, 2024
    Show notes

Are you clinging to strict religious or scientific beliefs that prevent you from embracing spiritual experiences?

Societal institutions brainwash people to believe that "real" is limited to only what can be seen, touched or understood within the rules of their profit-generating agendas.

Intuition, energy work and "woo-woo" methods of healing, communication and "knowing" are considered quackery.

But denying the spiritual realm of our human experience causes very "real" symptoms of depression, anxiety and disconnectedness.

My guest today is Paul Quinton–a transformational mentor, energy worker, channel, writer and teacher of soul integration and esoteric knowledge. Our conversation is your introduction to how to access multidimensional states of your own consciousness. You'll learn:

    • How its possible to heal addiction and disable your "triggers" by tapping into the energy of your emotions

    • Why relying on logic keeps you stuck in the past (and in service to other people's agendas) and how to access your own innate wisdom from a higher state of consciousness

    • The difference between feeling your feelings and thinking about your emotions

    • How to harness the power of intention to get out of your head so you are no longer debilitated by emotional baggage

Ep106: Best practices (and pitfalls) to stop over-drinking with James Swanwick Feb 13, 2024
    Show notes

Have you tried taking a break from alcohol so that you can reset your tolerance…only to fall back into default habits that leave you hungover?

The cycle is exhausting. We vacillate between trying to outsmart the urge to drink and feeling hopeless and ashamed because we failed.

And the more our focus and energy revolve around alcohol, the less happy and fulfilled we feel.

The reason the average over-drinker struggles for ten years before asking for help is because we assume we have to quit drinking forever. And the idea of sobriety feels like a vow of celibacy. Or agreeing to be neutered.

But millions of people for whom COVID proved to be the tipping point into alcohol addiction are now embracing evidence-based strategies to escape the cycle of self-defeat. And they are discovering the best way to stop over-drinking is actually the way that feels most inviting to YOU.

My guest today is James Swanwick, the host of the top-rated Alcohol-Free Lifestyle podcast. In this episode, you'll learn:

    • How to know if you need an extended period of sobriety

    • What happens to the 95 percent of people who don't stick with AA

    • Why joining a like-minded community that aligns with your desired identity makes changing your drinking habits so much easier

    • How to choose goals that make you happy so that drinking less (or not at all) is connected to a greater sense of purpose.

Ep105: Do you need a hangover whisperer? Feb 07, 2024
    Show notes

The secret to drinking like a normal person is not perfection. There is no "right" amount of alcohol that you should or shouldn't drink.

The truth of your experience with (and without) alcohol is always changing based on your stress, hormones, social dynamics, sleep needs, etc.

It's not what you think, it's how you feel.

You have to learn how to deal with what is--instead of what "should be." How much you drank last night is NOT what matters when you wake up with a hangover. It's how you respond to yourself and your needs in the present moment.

In this episode, I breakdown a recent "emergency" call from one of my clients. Get the step by step process I use to orient yourself within the process of change next time you wake up and realize you "did it again."

Learn how to shift from a fixed to a growth mindset so that you can quickly forgive yourself, extract the lesson and refine your strategy to move forward.

Ep104: The link between anxiety and inflammation with Carly Lucchesi Feb 06, 2024
    Show notes

If inflammation is the driving force of nearly every chronic disorder, what causes inflammation?

Symptoms of inflammation can strike any part of the body. It's not just swollen, arthritic joints. From belly bloat to brain fog to hypertension, inflammation weaks havoc and robs us of vitality.

It's normal to treat symptoms of inflammation with medication. But that's like continually mopping up the water that's spilling out of the bathtub instead of turning off the faucet. And then adjusting your life around the water problem.

Regardless of genetics, environmental toxins and even your diet, the primary source of inflammation is not what you think. Actually, it's HOW you think.

Carly Luccesi is a registered dietician specializing in weight loss and interrupting self-limiting thought patterns that lead to chronic inflammation. In this episode, you'll learn:

    • How the foods you're NOT eating contribute to your inflammation

    • The overlooked nutritional demands of mental stress

    • How changing your relationship to the thoughts in your brain changes your physiology

    • The two-pronged, top-down and bottom-up approach to healing your inflammation

Ep103: What you need to know about the energy of pain with Dr. Lynn Carey Jan 31, 2024
    Show notes

Have you been searching for a medical explanation as to why you suffer with chronic pain and depression?

We're taught to view pain, inflammation, and a lack of energy as dysfunctional biological processes.

And so we see all the doctors, try all the medications and wonder what we've done to deserve this. Occasionally we find temporary relief, but over time, it's obvious we're on a downhill trajectory.

    Searching for answers is exhausting.

Dr. Lynn Carey is a doctor of chiropractic who suffered with illness and pain for many years. When she finally connected her physical symptoms with mental and emotional stress, her whole life changed.

    • Why seeking relief from pain without addressing the source of that pain only makes it worse (and what to do instead)

    • How to change your relationship with pain so that you no longer fear it

    • The paradigm shift that restores your innate power to heal yourself

    • How to create a relationship with your doctor so that you can get the support that you need without surrendering your autonomy

Ep102: Is your fear of being fat actually making you fat? with Kerry Tepedino Jan 30, 2024
    Show notes

Does managing your weight feel like a stressful, full-time job?

We've been programmed to believe that controlling our inner fat slob requires willpower.

So we count calories, avoid entire food groups and shame ourselves for overeating.

But willpower requires focus. And the more distracted and stressed we are, the less control we have.

Which makes it even harder to deal with urges and cravings. And that makes us more distracted and stressed. It's a downward spiral.

For some of us, the obsession with diet leads to full blown food addiction. We get so in our heads that we don't even remember what it feels like to be normal around food.

Habits of self-abuse and neglect lead to isolation, binge eating and the loss of physical and mental vitality.

Kerry Tepedino is a weight loss coach and best selling author of the book One Thought Away. In this episode, we discuss the fear of being fat and how to heal your mind so you can reclaim your self-control. You'll learn…

    • The difference between overeating and food addiction

    • How to identify the disordered thinking patterns that trigger binge eating

    • The emotional processing skills you need to control yourself with food

    • How to leverage your desire to be happy so you can heal your fear of being fat

    Ep101 | How to Help-Emergency Coaching Training for Parents. Jan 24, 2024
    Show notes

Are you the parent of an adult child who's struggling with substance use or other addictive patterns of behavior?

Over the years, you've undoubtedly tried everything…ranging from tough love to protecting them from painful consequences.

You'd throw yourself under a train if that would actually help, but you know it won't.

Yet their pain is your pain. And the reality is that you need them to be okay so that you can be okay. And that needy, codependent energy only makes things worse.

You need to get your own emotions under control so that you don't resort to begging, bargaining, bribing or shaming them into change. Because if those strategies worked, everything would be perfect.

In this episode, I lay out the core tenets of coaching so that you can have a conversation with your child that actually helps.

Email or DM me @RecoverwithColleen with your questions. I love hearing from you!

    Show notes

Are you overwhelmed and exhausted by your everyday life…and also constantly worried because you're not doing "enough?"

Most type-A, hyper-functioning people-pleasers think that the only solution to burnout is push through it … the idea of slowing down feels ridiculous and irresponsible.

And so your life feels like a Groundhog Day Marathon. You force yourself to smile despite your growing sense of resentment and apathy...because #gratitude is supposed to help?

Cait Donovan is an international speaker, best-selling author and host of Fried: The Burnout Podcast. She's here to explain the real source of your burnout and offer simple action steps that will put you on the path to recovery.

    In this episode:

    • Learn the 3 symptoms that qualify as official burnout (yes, that's a real thing) and why "pushing through" makes things worse, not better

    • Why people in helping professions experience higher rates of burnout due to the reasons they chose that profession in the first place

    • The dark side of "helping" others that keeps you stuck in a cycle of victimhood, martyrdom and self-neglect

    • How to use your resentment as an internal compass to set better boundaries (with yourself and others)

    • Why "peeing when you have to pee" is the first step to healing burnout

    • How to retrain the people around you to solve their own problems with the BRAT method

    Ep98 | Rediscover Joyful Eating with 5 Fundamental Habits--with Amy Lang Jan 16, 2024
    Show notes

Have you ever noticed that the more you try to restrict your food or alcohol intake, the more obsessed you become with what you think you can't have?

We declare war on The Craving. The sweet tooth. The pasta and bread. The nightly cocktail.

Because we think the opposite of gluttony is deprivation. So we over-correct with an all-or-nothing, black and white strategy. We're either "on the wagon" or partying like it's 1999.

But even if we manage to lose weight or stay sober, we're left with a nagging sense of dread and fear. Because being "good" feels like holding your breath. The level of discipline required isn't sustainable.

Indeed… 95 percent of people who lose weight on a diet are heavier a year later. And committing to a lifetime of sobriety makes it nine times more likely you'll binge drink in the future.

Amy Lang is the author of the best-selling book Thoughts are Habits Too: Master Your Triggers, Free Yourself from Diet Culture and Rediscover Joyful Eating. In this episode, you'll learn:

    • Why telling yourself "No" creates a false sense of scarcity that your brain is hard-wired to resist

    • How to know the difference between soothing an anxious mind and nourishing your body

    • The counter-intuitive reason accepting yourself as you are in this moment is the gateway to transformation

    • Amy's five fundamental habits for weight loss
