    It’s Not About the Alcohol

Would you like to reduce your alcohol consumption by about 80 percent? Become the version of you who can just “take it or leave it” so that you can enjoy drinking socially without relying on alcohol to manage your stress, anxiety, loneliness and boredom when you’re by yourself?

Most high achieving women assume over-drinking is caused by a lack of willpower–or worse, the incurable disease of “alcoholism.” So they beat themselves up and avoid asking for help because they feel ashamed and out of control.

Whether you’re a daily drinker who can’t break the habit, or you’re still going to sobriety meetings even though you don’t drink anymore, the real problem is that you don’t trust yourself.

Which means it’s not about the alcohol. It’s about your relationship with yourself.

Colleen Freeland is a a mindful drinking coach helping professional women learn how drinking less (or not at all) is actually a superpower, even when the idea of giving up the only thing that helps them quiet their mind feels impossible.

The solution to alcohol use disorder is a FEELING. If you felt comfortable in your own skin and at ease in your life, you would drink like someone who is comfortable and at ease!

Join me each week for holistic, evidence-based strategies to fix your dopamine deficit, regulate your nervous system, cure imposter syndrome, manage sugar cravings, improve your sleep and reclaim your mental health so you no longer have the urge to escape your own body.

Get happy, not sober. Because happy people don’t drink themselves into a stupor.

    Show notes

Were you raised to believe that thoughts and feelings that don't align with your religious values are wrong and even "sinful?"

Many of us who grew up in church are in the habit of ignoring emotions that contradict what we've been taught to believe is "right."

But rejecting our emotions requires us to reject ourselves, leaving us fractured instead of whole . And the disconnect between our head and our heart leads to pain, confusion and blind adherence to rules that keep us in bondage.

Sara Bybee Fisk is the host of the top-rated Ex-Good-Girl podcast. She's here to share how learning to feel and trust her own truth liberated her from the need to seek other people's approval. You'll hear:

    • Why Sara left the LDS Mormon community even though she deeply loved her life

    • The true cost of being a people-pleasing perfectionist

    • Where Sara got the courage to break the rules and listen to her heart

EP126 How to reduce cravings, improve mood and feel naturally energetic with holistic hormone coach Leisha Drews Jun 11, 2024
    Show notes

Do you struggle to show up as your best self because you feel fat, tired and grumpy?

Most high achieving women diagnose themselves as lazy or bitchy when our bodies feel like "one more problem" we have to deal with. We push through our feelings and try harder to do better, but deep down wonder what is wrong with us.

But even if we're diagnosed with a legit hormone imbalance, medications can only bandaid the symptoms and enable us to continue behaviors that lead to burnout.

Blaming your body for the deficits your behaviors are creating, and restricting your food intake while using coffee (and wine) to get through the day makes life harder, not easier.

Leisha Drews is a holistic hormone coach who teaches women how to heal their relationship with their bodies so their bodies can heal. In this episode, you'll learn:

    • The beliefs and behaviors that cause cravings, fatigue and moodiness

    • How to escape the "on and off the wagon" lifestyle so you can live in a permanent state of wellbeing

    • Simple daily self-care practices that support hormone health and give you the energy you need to not only function but to enjoy your life

How often do you hear yourself say the following: "I don't know," "This is going to suck," "I don't have time," "The problem is…" and "Whatever, I don't care?"

Most people don't question the stories they tell themselves. They believe everything they think and act as though it's true. And then feel like a failure when they repeatedly try and fail to break a bad habit.

The words in your brain are like familiar songs that come on the radio. You sing along even when you don't like the tune because you know the words.

Thoughts are habits too. And the more often you repeat a phrase in your head, the more "right" it feels in your body. And that prevents you from asking, "what else might be true?"

In this episode, you'll learn how to overcome the five biggest lies you tell yourself so that you can finally gain the momentum you need to escape the cycle of self sabotage.

Click here to BOOK A DISCOVERY CALL WITH COLLEEN Are you looking for a mindful drinking coach instead of a sobriety program? I can help you reduce your drinking by 80 percent so you don't have to quit. You'll walk away with a clear understanding of why you're struggling and what tools you need to achieve your goals.

Are you in the habit of beating yourself up and trying to willpower your way into being a better person?

Most high achieving women who use alcohol to cope with their stress are caught in a cycle of punishment and reward. They work hard and believe they deserve to play hard. And when they overdo it, they actually embrace their shame because they believe that feeling bad will motivate them to do better.

The problem with using shame to motivate yourself to drink less is that when you get it right, the shame disappears--taking with it the motivation to make a new habit out of your good behavior. The cycle is frustrating and exhausting because it's unpredictable. You can't ever be certain that you can trust yourself.

Being unable to trust yourself is the crux of alcohol use disorder. The shame and guilt undermine your sense of self worth and motivation in other areas of your life. You go from feeling like a woman who is capable of doing anything you set your mind to someone who just wants to get through the day. Long term goals get farther and farther away.

Continuing to focus on the problem makes the problem worse. In this episode, you'll learn the three elements of self-compassion…which are mindfulness, kindness and recognizing your humanity. I'll explain the science that reveals that the secret to change is allowing yourself to be where you're at.

Do you believe that accepting your overweight body as she is will make you lazy and complacent?

Most of us claim the reason we want to lose weight is so we can feel healthy. However, let's be honest. Your brain reminds you every five seconds that the extra pounds are gross and disgusting. And you just want to be free.

You may embrace the idea that big can be beautiful, but you don't identify as a plus-size woman. You refuse to let yourself feel better until you look better.

But the bottom line is the more shame you're carrying about how you look, the harder it gets to lose weight.

In this episode, I'll walk you through the step-by-step process for how to apply my 7 core skills of emotional sobriety to your weight loss goals. So you can free yourself of the mental roadblocks that undermine the sense of safety and confidence you need to accomplish your goals.

    And for today's episode....

Is your motivation to change your drinking habits strongest when you're hungover…but less so when you're actually drinking?

Most high performing perfectionists are capable of doing anything they set their mind to. Which is why the frustration that comes with feeling like you can't control your drinking can quickly erode your self-confidence.

Which causes you to beat yourself up even more…and get stuck in your head trying to figure out what the hell is wrong with you. Because how do you solve a problem if the problem is you?

In this episode, I'll teach you the step-by-step process for how to apply my 7 core principles of emotional sobriety to your next hangover. This is the exact framework my high achieving professional clients follow to reduce their drinking by 80 percent so that alcohol can go back to being a pleasure instead of a problem.

Ep120: Overcoming grief and PTSD with rapid resolution trauma therapy with Kristin Rivas Apr 30, 2024
    Show notes

Are you finding it hard to move forward in life because of a significant loss or trauma you've experienced?

We can all agree there is no "right" way to recover from trauma, or an appropriate timeline for grief. But when you're the one who's suffering, it's terrifying to feel frozen in time when life just keeps moving on for everyone else.

But there's no such thing as "stuck." You are moving forward, even if it's in the wrong direction. And your physical health can quickly deteriorate when you're suffering from mental and emotional distress. Which can lead to a frustrating lack of support as most doctors don't address the mind-body connection.

My guest is a brain health coach and certified hypnotist. Kristin Rivas uses Rapid Resolution Trauma Therapy (RRT) to help people overcome their PTSD symptoms. In this episode, you'll hear:

    • Kristin's story of overcoming a debilitating seizure disorder that she developed after losing her sister in a drunk driving accident

    • The impact that a single RRT session had on Kristin's neurological symptoms

    • How rapid resolution therapy (RRT) works

    • The science and efficacy of rapid resolution therapy (RRT)

Stay tuned until the end to hear Kristin do a mini RRT session where we uncover the REAL reason why I'm struggling to be consistent with my daily exercise routine. It's an eye-opener!

Ep119: Is naltrexone effective in alcohol dependance? Apr 23, 2024
    Show notes

Have you considered using naltrexone or other medications to curb your alcohol cravings?

As alcohol use disorder is technically a thinking problem, most of us are too afraid to discuss our symptoms with a doctor. We worry about being forced into a treatment program or denied medications due to our drinking.

And the more we try and fail to change on our own, the more shame and fear we feel…which increases your stress and perpetuates the cycle of overdrinking.

It feels like there is a ticking time bomb threatening to ruin our health, marriage and family dynamics. The guilt is overwhelming. Yet we have no idea what to do.

You already know there is no magic pill. However, there are medications that can help. But how are you supposed to get it if you don't have a doctor you can trust?

Dr. Joshua Lee, MD specializes in medication-assisted treatment of alcohol use disorder. He is passionate about making evidence-based treatments accessible to those seeking to drink less or achieve sobriety. He is the Chief Clinical Advisor at Oar Health, a telemedicine platform that provides convenient and private access to naltrexone for anyone suffering with alcohol use disorder. Ep118: Why you need a direct access primary care physician Apr 16, 2024
    Show notes

Are you worried about your ability to access high quality healthcare at a reasonable cost?

Most of us are distracted by the politics of healthcare. But while we're arguing about the rising costs and who has access to what services, most of us have failed to notice that the healthcare system in which we grew up no longer exists.

It's almost impossible to be seen when we're actually sick. Our doctors have no time to discuss complicated concerns. And then we're blindsided by monthly premiums and out of pocket expenses.

We know the system is broken. But what's the alternative?

My guest today is Dr. Maryal Concepcion, a family medicine doctor who joined the mass exodus of burned out physicians refusing to provide substandard care in the insurance-based system. We're doing a deep dive into the direct primary care (DPC) model that is revolutionizing the connection between doctors and their patients and providing high quality, comprehensive care at a fraction of the cost. In this episode, you'll learn:

    • The difference between DPC and insurance-based business models

    • How the DPC model benefits families with small children and people with severe chronic illnesses

    • If you still need insurance when you have a DPC physician

    • How to find a DPC physician in your area
