    It’s Not About the Alcohol

Would you like to reduce your alcohol consumption by about 80 percent? Become the version of you who can just “take it or leave it” so that you can enjoy drinking socially without relying on alcohol to manage your stress, anxiety, loneliness and boredom when you’re by yourself?

Most high achieving women assume over-drinking is caused by a lack of willpower–or worse, the incurable disease of “alcoholism.” So they beat themselves up and avoid asking for help because they feel ashamed and out of control.

Whether you’re a daily drinker who can’t break the habit, or you’re still going to sobriety meetings even though you don’t drink anymore, the real problem is that you don’t trust yourself.

Which means it’s not about the alcohol. It’s about your relationship with yourself.

Colleen Freeland is a a mindful drinking coach helping professional women learn how drinking less (or not at all) is actually a superpower, even when the idea of giving up the only thing that helps them quiet their mind feels impossible.

The solution to alcohol use disorder is a FEELING. If you felt comfortable in your own skin and at ease in your life, you would drink like someone who is comfortable and at ease!

Join me each week for holistic, evidence-based strategies to fix your dopamine deficit, regulate your nervous system, cure imposter syndrome, manage sugar cravings, improve your sleep and reclaim your mental health so you no longer have the urge to escape your own body.

Get happy, not sober. Because happy people don’t drink themselves into a stupor.

Ep58: How to reclaim your personal power without being a bitch Jul 10, 2023
    Show notes

Personal power is when you stop placing conditions on when you will and won't be okay.

Okayness is a feeling, not a fact. It's a story you're telling yourself.

Your brain has created a set of conditions and is holding your nervous system hostage. If life fails to meet your expectations, your body is thrown into a stress response.

You're trying to regulate your emotions by controlling the outside world. But the problem is not what is or isn't happening. It's how you FEEL about what is or isn't happening.

The facts themselves aren't threatening. Just your feelings about them.

Personal power is an awareness that your mind is the source of your emotional discomfort.

You can give yourself permission to be okay…and practice being okay…even when life doesn't go as planned. You can learn how to skip the part where you're stuck in emotional angst.

Ep57 | The naked truth about emotionally sober sex Jul 03, 2023
    Show notes

Emotional sobriety requires prioritizing self care. You don't need permission or approval to set boundaries with your body.

But that feels complicated when applied to sex. Women have been conditioned to "service" our partners on a regular basis, whether we feel like it or not. If you don't keep your man happy, someone else might.

Contrary to patriarchal standards perpetuated by BOTH men and women, your sexual desires are just as valid as your partner's. Even when your only desire is to be left alone.

It's normal for libido to flatline in early sobriety. You're in a legit dopamine deficit. Your nervous system is dysregulated and you're emotionally exhausted. It's called recovery for a reason.

But having obligatory sex – "getting it over with" so you can "check the box"-- further disconnects you from your body. And infuses your relationship with resentment and contempt.

You know what's sexy? A woman who isn't ashamed of herself or her body. A woman who can tolerate the messiness of being human–in herself and her partner.

It's okay. You're okay. This isn't permanent. Committing to radical honesty and taking care of your physical needs is HOW you awaken the Goddess within.

Ep56| Can alcoholism be cured? Jun 26, 2023
    Show notes

When we think about whether or not alcoholism can be cured, realize we're only asking people who identify as alcoholics.

There are many people who experience the negative side effects of drinking and decide to quit or cut back. In fact, seventy-five percent of drinkers self-correct on their own.

Alcohol use disorder is a spectrum. There is no line between episodic, problematic drinking and disease. Addiction IS progressive when left unchecked. But it's also reversible with abstinence, education, community and mental health support. The will to live is powerful; feeling good is its own reward.

The AA culture says there is no cure for alcoholism. Once an addict, always an addict. But that's not true. The brain does heal. People can and do recover.

The more dangerous addiction is to the idea that you'll always be an alcoholic, even when you're sober.

Reset your nervous system with breathwork Jun 19, 2023
    Show notes

As a yogi, I thought I knew what breathwork was (calming but not exactly "powerful"). And then I did a breathwork session with Victoria Lee Starr. The experience blew my mind and forever changed my approach to mental health and recovery.

Doing the "work" of recovery–unpacking emotional issues and learning new mental processes–is exhausting. Why? Because trauma and unprocessed emotions get stuck in the body. Blocked energy weighs you down and makes it difficult to move forward.

Would you like to give yourself a break? Get out of your head and into your breath. Doing breathwork can bypass the cognitive loop-de-loops and reset your nervous system. So that you feel lighter, freer and more relaxed.

BONUS: If you're a member of ANY of my programs, you're invited to join our private group session with Victoria once a month at no extra cost. Check your course dashboard for details.

Want to try breathwork? Click here to register for a single group session with Victoria Lee Starr this Wednesday, June 21st @ 7pm EST/4 pm PST. If you're listening in the future, click here to go to her website to catch her next available.

Ep54 | How to stop sugar cravings in sobriety Jun 12, 2023
    Show notes

According to Einstein, you can't solve a problem with the same perspective that sees the problem.

Which is why the first step towards a solution often begins with redefining the problem. Shift your persective. Ask better questions.

In this episode, learn why diagnosing yourself with sugar cravings limits your view of the big picture.

Cravings are emotional, not biological. The urge to consume sugar is not the same as wanting water because you're thirsty. You're not suffering from a sugar deficit.

The easiest way to eliminate cravings once and for all is to stop fighting them and ask, what's really going on?

Is anger helpful when you need to be honest? Jun 05, 2023
    Show notes

Why do we lose our sh*t when we have to stand in our truth?

Honesty is painful. Which is why we tend to rely on anger as a medium to defend our truth.

But the truth isn't right or wrong. Truth just is what it is. It doesn't need to be approved or understood–by anyone–including you!

If you want to reclaim your personal power, you have to stop blaming other people for how you feel.

Radical honesty moves you from resistance to acceptance. So you can deal with life as it is instead of how it should be.

Ep 52| How addiction hacks your brain and how to hack it back May 29, 2023
    Show notes

Dopamine is our primary source of motivation. It triggers us to move our ass towards whatever we think we want.

The more you use external crutches to boost your dopamine, the less able your brain is to produce it naturally.

You don't have to be a raging coke-head for this to apply. If you rely on any combination of sugar, caffeine, nicotine and alcohol for energy and motivation, or find yourself unable to stay off your phone, you're in a dopamine deficit.

In this episode, learn how low-grade addictions rob you of authentic pleasure and control over your life, and get the easy-to-implement action steps that will drastically accelerate your recovery.

How to deal with subconscious guilt May 22, 2023
    Show notes

Guilt is a feeling, not a fact. Feeling "bad" about taking care of yourself is an imaginary obstacle. In reality, your needs are just as important as everyone else's.

If that sounds radical, this episode is for you.

For five years, I've been telling myself that I can't go for a bike ride because my dog can't come with me. That sounds ridiculous to say out loud. But it's the only way to break the power of subconscious guilt.

Most of our behavior is driven by subconscious emotions. We want to avoid feeling "bad."

How often do you let guilt keep you from acting in your own best interest? Would you like to drop the subconscious baggage?

Ep 50: Letting go of your divorce story May 15, 2023
    Show notes

Divorce is traumatizing. But the story you tell yourself about your ex-partner can do far more damage--to you--than the actual events.

Long-term suffering is self-inflicted. Clinging to a painful story prevents us from moving forward and experiencing joy. Our bodies–our nervous systems–are retraumatized each time we remind ourselves what happened.

Forgiveness isn't about condoning or excusing someone else's behavior. Forgiveness is about acceptance–when you stop arguing that things should have been different.

You can't change the past. But you can change your relationship with the past. Only you can release yourself from the burdens of anger and resentment. You know that, but HOW do you do that?

The difference between people who change and people who don't May 08, 2023
    Show notes

You know that sinking feeling when you're staying sober or eating clean or making it to the gym–and you suddenly realize it's not going to last?

I hate that feeling. Luckily, it's a feeling, not a fact.

Sustaining a new habit does not require a robot-like ability to resist temptation. Or massive amounts of grit and determination. It's the awareness that ALL emotions are temporary. As a human, you should expect to have an equal number of good days and bad days–so buckle up.

Learn how to experience fear, laziness and defeat without becoming them. Start identifying as someone who accepts that success is built on failure. Because you can't change without the belief that it's possible.

Listen and learn the four steps I use to cultivate that belief!
