Growing up in East Tennessee, I was exposed to much classic country and blue grass on a daily basis. I recently finished Ken Burns' excellent documentary series on Country Music. There are Australian bushfires, oil spills, erratic temperature changes, earthquakes, hurricanes, the list goes on and on. Life on our planet is in a delicate balance. The Celts knew this. That's why trees were so important to Celtic culture.

It doesn't matter if you don't believe all the scientific evidence that points to human-made Climate Change. What is important is stewardship of our planet. We need to take care of it.

So in 2020, I want to draw attention to our hurting planet and how we can do just that. That's why our latest shirt and sticker design includes the Celtic Tree of Life.

I'll be honest. I don't have specifics as to what we can do. But if you have suggestions, please email me.

The 2020 Sainted Celtic Collection is now online. This is a very special package I put together each year to pay for the production of the podcast, but also to give you a way to promote the show.

You'll get a t-shirt, a couple pint glasses, a bunch of stickers, our Victims of Irish Music compilation CD and my latest CDs with the Brobdingnagian Bards. Plus, this year, you'll also get a digital copy of my Irish Drinking Songs for Cat Lovers album.

It's all one insanely low price. And the offer is good until February 3, 2020. Head on over to MageRecords.com to support the podcast today.

CELTIC PODCAST NETWORKThis is not the Celtic podcast out there. I'm sure you already know that. But you may not what other Celtic podcasts there are online. That's the reasons I share new episodes of other Celtic podcasts every week in the Celtic Music Magazine. This is one of the benefits of subscribing and reading. You'll learn about other great shows you might enjoy.

What shows? Well, let me share a few.

Erin's Isle is published by Erin Breen, an Emmy award-winning journalist, columnist and writer for television, radio and print who has put 25 years of experience to work honing a true talent for storytelling. Her podcast is internationally known and has become part of the inflight entertainment on Aer Lingus flights to and from Ireland. She explores the out of the way adventures you could easily miss if she weren't one step ahead of you.

Irish Music Stories is published by Shannon Heaton. She plays Irish flute and sings. She LOVEs Irish music and dance, and related Celtic traditions. This show is her way of sharing the rich inspiration that the global 'trad' community has given to her, with the stories behind the music.

After a long hiatus, Celtic Roots Radio is back. Raymond McCullough in Downpatrick, Co. Down, Northern Ireland whet's yer appetite with Celtic, folk, folk/rock, Appalachian, Breton, bluegrass, Scottish, Irish, Cajun, Cape Breton, singer/songwriter – if its Celtic, roots or acoustic music you want, you'll find it there (plus a wee drop a' Norn Iron craic!). The show is once again publishing new episodes.

You can find links to ALL of these podcasts and more at MageNetwork.com. That's where I publish links to all of my shows and posts links to other Celtic podcasts to share with you in the Celtic Music Magazine.

Heidi Murphy emailed a photo: "I'm listening to this while editing my book. Lovely Celtic Christmas music!

I noticed the other day that you had Round the House on. They're so cool. I've jammed with them before (I play tin whistle and bodhran) and they're delightful.

I recently went to the World Highland Games in Tucson, AZ. It was so lovely to watch them toss the caber and hammer. They broke a record in something I don't know the name of. It's a 2 stone bail of hay trussed up in canvas they toss with a pitchfork. I'd love to know what that's called. I was off listening to music and eating haggis and a scone when they announced that name.

Here's a pic of me hiking home from Muckross Abbey after a long day of exploring in the rain. Slainte"

    Marshall Blosser emailed: "Hey Celtfather,

In searching for Newfoundland Celtic artists it dawned on me that you had a 2 hour special on Canadian Celtic music back in 2016. Episode 254 specifically from April 7, 2016. That episode gave me several artists to look up. For me specifically, The Rolling Kings, and The Ennis Sisters. As well as a few others from neighboring provinces.

My own on-line research found several other artists although I am not sure how many are still active. Listing the ones I can find on either Amazon or CDBaby first: The Irish Descendants, Celtic Connection, Shanneyganook, The Flummies, and Great Big Sea.

I know Great Big Sea isn't an active group any more but it's members, specifically Alan Doyle, Sean McCann and Murray Foster have continued to record music.

There is one band I want to get some recordings of but I can't find any information on is Greeley's Reel. They've been playing the local St John's pubs for 10 years.

As I visit the pubs I will make sure to try and connect any Irish/Celtic bands I find to your submission page. I am also kicking around the idea of starting a podcast of local artists for Newfoundland to help get them some more exposure. Any advise on how you started would be awesome. Looking forward to sending you many new artists"

Tim Sommer in Middleton, ID emailed: "Hi Marc, I love your podcast and wanted to support it and was signing up for the $5 per month contribution and I just briefly saw the window to select that.... when what do you know...I was signed up for the $5 per episode. Couldn't figure out how to change that number so am asking for your help to change it.

Yes, I do think you are worth $5 an episode but if my wife starts seeing the monthly amount for that instead of the $5 per month, she'll be using her serious face and posture, asking me what I thought I was doing.

It could impact my entire Irish and Scottish music habit. It's like knowing how many beers you can drink at the session before you are in serious trouble."

Keep it up!"

Tom Cochran emailed: "Hi Mark, Tom C from the highlands of western Colorado. Just recently found your podcast from a post on my Clan's Facebook page. Have listened to several now and find the diversity of music refreshing and matching my own musical tastes which are eclectic. I enjoy everything from classical, to musical theatre, classic rock, folk, and of course Celtic music in its many forms. My wife and I along with son Brendan and friend Jonathan make up Oran Mor. We have been playing a lot these past few months locally and are planning our first recording in the coming year. As a long time theatre geek ( presently directing Conor McPhearson's Irish Drama "The Veil") I am new to the music business.

So I would appreciate any advice. You can check out our web page at oranmormusic.com. Favorite influences include, Dougie McIean, Runrig, Battlefield Band, Old Blind Dogs, Silly Wizard, Albannach, The Elders and the Chieftains. I am really liking the new groups your show is turning me onto; new fave Runa. I look forward to many hours of great music. Keep up the good work."

Junya emailed: "hi. im from Japan. im a very casual listener, and i dont have the habit of checking the song titles and artists names, so i have no knowledge, but have been listening to your podcast for, probably more than 10 years. i felt like listening to such music in Christmas time in December, over 10years ago, (im not Christian and l am japanese living in Japan, so i dont have a chance to experience the Westerners' christmas festivity, but i always long to join their Christmas mood) and tried searching, then your website was the top result. somehow irish and celtic music sounds very nice to me even though im not a fan of any ethnic type of music very much.

the song i liked from this Halloween podcast was The Rogue's Hellbound Sleigh, with the club music like beautiful and cool elements mixed in."

Katherine Horning emailed on Facebook: "Hello! I was just listening to episode #239 and the song at about 101 minutes was so great. I think it's Girl in the Street. I'm a dog walker, so that's probably why it resonated. But I tried to google it and can't find it. Please help me! Where can I find this song and artist? Thank you for your wonderful podcast. I started playing harp this year and have found your show very inspiring!"

You can find Nick Hennessey at http://nickhennessey.co.uk/. Sadly, I don't see his CD as available.

José Villanueva Music emailed: "Hi Marc! Firstly I wanna say Congratulations!!! Your podcast is great and I listen to it as much I can. I've been looking for a song called "The Hunter Set" but I didn't find the episode where you set it. I had a tried on Youtube but they deleted the video.

Do you have the complete name or your episode? Thank you so much! Cheers from Sonora, Mexico!"

Tanya Sapien emailed: "Hey Marc, Tanya Sapien here, I re-wrote this like ten times, so sorry if it seems scatterbrained.

I've been listening to you for years, I can't remember when or where I first picked the podcast up, and I've been meaning to write in for ages but I always chickened out, always that is until now. In your last episode a trans woman wrote in and said she's had a hard time finding others like herself in the audience, so being a trans woman myself I took that as a sign it was time to speak up.

Your podcast has always brought warmth into my life from things as mundane as tending the fire pit to as exciting as my recent cross-country bus ride to meet my boyfriend face-to-face for the first time. Your chipper positivity has been a beacon of light in a dark world, and when I'm constantly surrounded by people that choose hating their enemies before loving their friends and who insist every single facet of life has to be a political statement, I'm glad I still find refuge here.

There's no left or right, no black nor white, No red against blue we don't fight over hue

    We're just here to play so sing here all day shed your dismay in Gunn's name I say;

    Have a beautiful Yule today."

Brian Stuepfert of Sacramento, California emailed a photo: "Training for a marathon with celtic and Irish music in my ears."

Thanks also to Neill for helping with my Gaelic pronunciation on many of the recent episodes of the podcasts.

Michael Vitagliano emailed: "Hey Mark! My wife and I are listening to episode 430 while driving from Galway to Dublin. It's our last couple of days on the Emerald Isle and one stop is definitely going to be Cobblestone in Dublin for some amazing live trad tunes. One thing I've been surprised about being over here is the lack of cd shops. Back in the States we stream everything, but I understand why artists over here don't want to be on services like Spotify. We're going to explore Claddagh Records tomorrow and I'm optimistic we'll find a pretty solid selection. I don't know how much more work it is for you, but to include album links in the episodes would definitely help us in finding the artist and knowing which album to purchase. Just throwing that out there. Love the podcast, we've been binging it these past two weeks here in Ireland. It's definitely made the experience that much more special."

Joseph Rosenthal emailed: "Hey Marc! I've been listening for about 2 months now and love hearing the diverse styles of Celtic music and helps me expand my knowledge on artists. I was going to email a favorite local Celtic group I listen to religiously during the Maryland Renaissance Festival called The Hooligans, but I'm unsure if you've played them already since you and they've been around for a couple years. Is there a condensed archive of Artists you have shared on your Podcast available? Keep up the good work! And good on you for imploring that no hate comes to your podcast! I like the focus on the positivity!"

At the beginning of 2019, I declared this the Year of Celtic Women. I'm proud to say that completed five episodes entirely dedicated to the women of Celtic music, with the generous help of Lady Susan of Thunder on the Plains. I feel like this podcast grew a lot as we talked about gender equality in Celtic music. So much so that I plan to continue my quarterly episodes dedicated to the ladies.

Now many of the shows featured soloists or females bands. But I think in 2020, I'm gonna expand and just highlight all women for these episodes: the singers, the instrumentalists, whomever. I'm excited to hear our community grow. And I thank you for being a part of it!

Karen Mitchell Carothers emailed: "Morning Marc! I was just listening to Episode 437 of the podcast here at work and thought I'd finally write in. I've been listening since the early days. Today, I'm getting jiggy with it while at work at NASA Goddard Spaceflight Center. Satellites don't take holidays, but the awesome music always makes my work day go by faster."

Rollin Butler emailed: "Hi Marc, we watch a PBS kIds animated show called "Molly of Denali", and they had an episode of Fiddle Playing, "Jigging," like Irish Step Dancing. I wondered if you have info about the Irish influence on the Alaska peoples, maybe from "Yukon gold Rush." Keep up the good work, and don't let the Naysayers get you down."

KIM KNEBEL emailed: "Greetings Marc and family. Sitting in my cozy warm bed listening to the program before getting busy for the celebrations. I love the show and really appreciate the diversity you showcase. I adore traditional Celtic music, of course, but things evolve and it's fun to see how folks have used the auld tunes to launch new music. I usually key up the podcasts on my trip up north for jewelry making classes. Makes the commute go by quickly and very pleasantly. Thank you for all you do to promote Celtic culture through the podcasts, newsletter and trips. Slainte!??"

Nancy Klein emailed photos: "Dear Mark, I am an American woman who loves your show. I listen to it in Spain, where I live now. We used to live in Ireland where I really enjoyed listening to music there. So your show brings Ireland back to me. Here are three photos of the Dingle Peninsula in Ireland, where you will be going on your upcoming trip with fellow Celtic music lovers. Enjoy! With appreciation for all that you do,"

HOW TO VOTE IN THE CELTIC TOP 20We are near the end of the year. That means there are just a couple more weeks left for you to vote in the Celtic Top 20.

The Celtic Top 20 is a poll for you to pick the best songs of each episode of the podcast. At the end of the year, I compile the twenty most-popular songs of all episodes into one very special, extra-long episode.

Your last day to vote for your favorite Celtic songs of this year is on December 18, 2019. There are many ways you can vote. I will list two below.

The most-obvious way to vote is to just relax and listen to the show. Each time you come across a song or tune that blows you away, write down the show time.

Then head over to the shownotes at CelticMusicPodcast.com. I list the times of each song played in the show. If you wrote down 5:56, you can find exactly what song was played at that timestamp.

Just copy the band name and the show number. Go to BestCelticMusic.net/vote/ and cast your vote.

You can repeat this procedure with as many tracks as you want in the show.

That's the basic way. But sometimes you want to give every song a solid chance to be heard. So now I want to share tips on how to make voting easier, using a method I use when picking my favorites.

Step 1. At the top of each episode of the podcast, I list every artist in the show. Copy and paste that list into a notes program along with the show number. I use Evernote. So that's where I paste it.

Step 2. Listen to the episode. If any song or tune doesn't impress you, look at the show time to find out the band name. Delete that band from the list.

Step 3. Repeat that procedure until you're done.

Step 4. Go vote at BestCelticMusic.net/vote/. Post all of the band names that remain in your list in the voting form. Congrats you're done!

I know. I'm a bit anal about voting. But sometimes I'm impressed by multiple artists. So I want to give each a chance to be heard again.

Either of these methods of voting are great with me. Ultimately, I want you to just enjoy the show. But the Celtic Top 20 is something special. This is a chance for many artists to get extra special attention. The tracks are also added to our Top Irish & Celtic Music Playlist on Spotify. It's a big honor. But these artists need your votes to earn it.

So go vote in the Celtic Top 20 today!

Tim Meushaw emailed two years ago: "Hi, Marc, I have been a listener for a very long time, but usually when I'm listening I'm doing fairly mundane things, like cleaning or driving. But I was on holiday on the Isle of Mull, in the Inner Hebrides, for a few days last week, and listened to episode 332 while hiking north to Ardmore Bay, outside of Tobermory. They say that on a clear day, you can see to the Isle of Skye, which reminded me of next year's Celtic Invasion. I can't say I actually saw Skye, but the rest of the scenery was breathtaking.

To prove I was listening, I made a short video of the bay, with "Sláinte Mhaith" from that episode playing as background music. Hope you enjoy!"

Tim followed up a few days ago and reminded about this email. So let me say first I am sorry Tim that I missed your email. I haven a much better system for including your feedback into the show. And hopefully, I won't run into that problem again in the future. Thank you so much for sharing the video too.

If you want to watch Tim's video. Head on over to the shownotes.

Fred Gilbertson emailed some photos in July 2018: "Hi Marc, I listened to your podcast for the 1st time yesterday. I had spent some time in the morning deleting other stuff from and then adding new stuff on my iPod. I think I stumbled upon your show doing an iTunes search for Natalie MacMaster. Anyway, I loaded the podcast on and later I rode my bike. My 1st new listen was to an NPR New music podcast, and when it ended I switched to your show.

I enjoyed it a lot, and I intend to listen again in the future. You read a note from the listener in Suffolk, England and told of the pictures he had attached for your viewing pleasure, and you welcomed "us" to send more. Right at that moment I happened to be at a spot that I thought you would find interesting. I was on the Colonial Parkway, near Williamsburg, VA. I stopped right where I was and took 3 pictures, rode another mile or so and took 2 more. It was a rather gloomy day, but it is always rather glorious out on this stretch of the earth.

On one 1 side of the parkway where I stopped, there is a farm that's called "Gospel Spreading Farm", which, due to its religious identity, is the only residence and farm that remained when the land was cleared decades ago for the construction of the parkway.

Same spot, looking to the southwest, you see the James River

Same spot, sort of northwest in direction, more of the James as well as the southern tip of Jamestown Island, where the colonists arrived in 1607.

About a mile away, the James w/ a look at the Surry Nuclear Power Station

    Same spot, a selfie."

Brandon Ball emailed a photo in May: "Love the podcast First podcast I ever listened to, back in 2009. Keep turning them out! And please play Drunken Night in Dublin by The Mahones?

Here's what I just built while listening to the most recent podcast. Whiskey you're the devil is playing now. It's a box for sprouts! Thanks Marc, Great listening,"

Kathy Levin emailed in March 2017, "Hey Marc, Hope all is going well.

You always ask what people are doing while listening to your Celtic Podcast - well I spend many days here at work (WD-40 Company) catching up on back episodes I have not listened to while working.

I use this to drown out the fact I work in an area with some very noisy people. Today I am setting the mood for an Irish Rovers concert we are going to tonight.

On another note: Would you please send me the link for artists that would like to have their music on the Podcast? I have a great guy that I met last year at an SCA event and then re-connected with last month who is interested. He is out of Canada and is also on Patreon.

    Thanks for the great music!"

Deanna Smith Scotland passed away a couple weeks ago. Deanna was the lead singer of the Celtic rock band Jiggernaut. I remember seeing her at the Texas Scottish Festival years ago. There was a ceilidh I was leading. She sang a song a capella, and everyone in the tent held their breath as she sang. It was strong and powerful.

I can't say I knew her super well. But each time I interacted with her, I was humbled by kindness. She was a big part of the Texas Celtic community and she will be missed.

Gary Hook emailed: "Mostly listen to the podcast at work.... sometimes in the car. Keep up the good work. Kudos to you for the playing of Andy Law's track, and sharing his story. Courage should always be recognized and encouraged. I'm off to buy some tunes and support his cause."

Mike Nichols emailed a photo: "I'm new to the whole podcast world, so I'm working hard to catch up. This is the photo of what I was doing whilst listening to #381 IH-10 westbound. I enjoy the variety of artists you highlight for us. I will have to force myself to listen to one old episode and a current one every week to catch up. Nothing like a good fiddle tune to keep a man awake while on the road between hither and yon! Thank ye kindly friend."

George Mears last year and sent several photos: "Marc, I've just returned from my own invasion of Scotland and listened to show 362, "As I Roved Out" with joy. My sister and I lost both our parents in the past two years. We took this trip, no kids or spouses, to celebrate our heritage and our parents lives. We flew into Glasgow, hopped into an RV, and spent 10 days visiting, Glencoe, Skye, Inverness, attended the Strathmore Highland Games at Glamis Castle, and Edinburgh. I hope your invasion trip is wonderful and I look forward to hearing about it. I'm not on FaceBook or Twitter so I will share some photos via google. Feel free to post them anywhere you'd like. Laura MacKenzie emailed a photo of her Celtic band: " Hi Marc - The Year of Irish & Celtic Women, that is a great and hearty theme!

I wrote to you some time ago, and you responded promptly - however, I did not act promptly, and now am inquiring:

—I understand you do not want to receive physical CDs.

—You mentioned the process and preferred format for sending you an album - could you send that again?

—Thank you, and I apologize for having to inquire!

I have a new 10-piece band called "BRASS LASSIE", traditional Scottish and Irish music (on fiddles, flutes, pipes, concertina, voice, women players) with a four piece horn section (all women horn players). 8 of the 10 band members are women, including myself - the founder and director.

I would love to send our studio album to you, released this fall!

So far, I've done little to promote it, mainly because I can't figure out how to do that... Many thanks"
