WELCOME TO CELTIC MUSIC * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic musician and podcaster. This show is dedicated to the indie Celtic musicians. Earth Day is an annual event celebrated around the world on April 22 to demonstrate support for environmental protection. Arbor Day is on April 24. Yet Coronavirus has taken over the international discussion. That makes it tough to talk about anything else in the short-term.

But climate change is the most-important long-term issue facing our planet. So I want to draw a little bit of attention to just how important it is that we are proper stewards of the planet. That means limiting dangerous carbon emissions and limiting other things that pollute

We Celts have long had a love of the land. This is one of the most-important issues for Celts, If we don't protect our planet, then we will destroy it. This episode is dedicated to the planet Earth.

    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

The Earth Day website has "11 Actions for the Planet During a Pandemic." That seems like a super appropriate article right now. You can read the article on the Earth Day website.

April 24 is also Arbor Day. I love the idea of planting trees to combat pollution. If you join the Arbor Day Foundation, they will send you ten trees. Or they will plant ten trees for you. Memberships are as little as $10 for six months. Not too bad a deal. So we're sending trees to the rainforest this month. Find out more at arborday.org.

If you want another way to support the planet. I'm donating 50% of the profit of our the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast shirt to the foundation for the rest of the month. The shirt has a beautiful Celtic knotwork tree design. And I'm told it's a great conversation starter. Get yours now.

Peter Gallagher in Ft. Myers, FL emailed: "Hi Marc - long story short, I've been listening as I paint walls and cabinet doors in my Florida vacation home. You played Albannach with Rathkeltair in today's pod, which I've heard twice through already. Do you know where that track was recorded? I may have been there as I saw them live a couple times before the lockdown. Thanks for everything"

Pam emailed a photo: "Marc, I have loved your podcast for years, sorry it took a situation like this for me to finally let you know that. Most recently I spent the time listening to your podcast while I brushed the winter coat out of my horse. He was happy to nibble on the beginnings of grass while I did it. In the past I would listen to your podcast while driving to work if I needed to calm down before a tough day was to start or on the weekend as I relaxed drinking wine. The best to you and your family and once again, thank you for continuing to put out your podcast."

Pamela Hatley emailed: "Hey Mark, I recently discovered your podcast and have subscribed and contributed through Patreon. Love the music and everything you bring with it. I used to listen to multiple political podcasts every day. That did not do much for my mental and emotional well-being. Now I am listening to past and current episodes of Irish and Celtic Music podcast, and haven't listened to a political podcast in weeks… Thank you for saving me from political podcasts!

Also...I subscribed to Celtic Music magazine but never received the zip files with the 34 Celtic music mp3s. Could you please email that to me again?

And also…I recently joined the Celtic Conundrum band as a banjoist. I was delighted to hear one of the band's songs on a recent Irish and Celtic Music podcast. Thanks so much for sharing our music.

Best to you and thanks for all you do!"

Eric Guarin emailed: "Hi Marc, I was listening to episode 436 where you said someone sent a hate-filled email blasting you for increasing diversity and invoking Jesus' name. Fie on them, I say! And funny those people like to invoke Jesus, who accepted a tax collector as disciple and had a prostitute washing his feet (roll eyes). If I could wave a magic wand I would banish them to be forced to live (separated!) in the slums of Nairobi, Rio, Mumbai, etc.

I'm half Hispanic and the other half stretches back through the Mayflower and Jamestown to Scotland and to France via William the Conqueror (so as white as it gets I guess). My first babysitters were a middle aged black couple, and a couple of gay fellows next door. So, I pretty much detest ANY form of discrimination, it's just an excuse for people to try and feel superior to others.

Anyway that whole thing incensed me so much it spurred me to sponsor you and send a link to my mom to listen. Keep up the good work, and since I now teach here's hoping for a post-coronavirus Celtic Invasion to Ireland (or maybe Scotland but I've never been to Ireland) summer 2021 or Spring Break; if the stars align I could bring my getting-elderly mom. Cheers!"

I originally planned to take this week off. I wanted to get ahead on upcoming shows. The problem is that I am on lockdown due to the COVID-19 virus. Many of you are too.

Yet, I had a few emails from Patons of the Podcast especially as well as regular listeners saying, "thank you for bringing some Celtic music joy to a world turned upside down".

I know we have over 450 episodes for you to enjoy while you're stuck at home. Nevertheless I decided to release this bonus episode of the podcast.

And it's not just a bonus episode. This is another extra-long episode. I compiled it rather quickly. But I hope you enjoy this offering. I'm not gonna talk too much. So thanks to my generous patrons and to each and every one of you. Please wash your hands, stay at home if you can, and be safe. So let's get rolling...

    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

The past month was pretty devastating for Celtic musicians. Our biggest month of the year was effectively canned. We have no idea when we will be able to perform in front of live audiences again. And even when we are able, will audiences come out?

Some of us are better off than others. That's because we have Patreon pages for our music. Just like for the podcast, fans can support some Celtic bands by making a monthly pledge to their music. Sometimes you get some digital goodies for your generosity too.

There are about 20 Celtic musicians and bands with Patreon pages. I compiled a list of Celtic musicians on Patreon. Follow the link for details.

The band Kinnfolk posted this little online. I asked if I could share it.

"Call me cynical, but I've always assumed that the world is moving away from live, local music. Our phones are too distracting; instead of looking out into the world around us, our heads are bowed over our screens, or we're busy trying to snap the perfect photo to be enjoyed later on Instagram. Or even when we are alert and engaged...it's so easy to pull up YouTube and summon a musical performance from any place in the world, any moment in time, any musician we choose. How can a local musician even matter, in a world like this?

    That's what I thought.

Over the past two years, this community has shown me time and time again that local music is not only relevant, but is a profound means of connecting with other human beings. I'm reminded of this every time we see repeat faces in the audience. Every time someone dances. Every time a busy bar goes still. Every time I see tears after a performance of "Danny Boy" or "Kilkelly, Ireland." Every time a child wanders to the stage and watches, fascinated, as we play.

I'm reminded that music is not only something we do, but something we give.

And so, as always, thank you all. For listening to our music, attending our shows, chatting with us online. Performance is a circle, and our music is meaningful because of these little moments of connection with you. <3"

I agree wholeheartedly. I find it amazing and heartening to see the outpouring of support the podcast has received over the past couple weeks. And my fans have been absolutely beyond amazingly generous.

This is a stressful time for all. So I'm grateful to have your support.

But I want to remind you to support bands like Kinnfolk and others in this podcast. We love creating and your kindness and generosity are what allow us to keep creating new music. So thank you all.

Tartan Day is on April 6. This is the North American celebration of Scottish heritage. And historically, it's the date the Scots declared their independence in 1320. We will celebrate the event with a little Scottish music. And a whole bunch of Celtic bands with kilts.

    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

There are quite a few Celtic musicians who make their living by performing. In fact, it's almost morbidly comical that one of the biggest challenges musicians have faced over the past few years is the declining sales of our primary revenue stream, CDs. More and more people are streaming music. That's made touring all the more important.

And now we have COVID-19. All of my big gigs through May are canceled. It's the same with most musicians. There has never been a better time to ask for your help.

Please support the musicians you enjoy. If you're able to buy digital downloads, a CD, or merch or tip the artist online. Do so. If you're not, we totally understand. So do something to promote the artist. Share their CD or Spotify page. Do something to spread the word. Share your love of them online and in your Facebook groups or other social groups.

I confess I've never been more thankful that I have this podcast to help support my family. So I can only imagine how other Celtic musicians are faring. Please support them as you're able.

Domenico Rossi emailed a photo from Italy: "Hi Marc! A HUGE thanks for your podcasts: it's always exciting waiting each Thursday!

This week (just as the last and, probably, also the next one) I'm working from home, due to COVID19 emergency. Here in Italy very strict rules force us to stay home and go out only for severe necessities.

Well, it's been a bit difficult to get used to but... hey! We are safe, alive, and we have our favourite music (Celtic one of course!) and your company! Even in this difficult times I thank the Lord and wait for better times... thanks to you, also, for your weekly gift. Attached you can find a pic of me working at my "new desk"... stay safe my friend!"

Eric Mailler responded to a Celtic Music Magazine email: "Hi Marc, I downloaded the songs without any issues. Also wanted to say thank you for everything you do. I love listening to songs I'd never hear otherwise and learning more about Celtic culture through the song lyrics and letters your read. You asked who some of our favorite Celtic bands are. As far as well known bands go, the Young Dubliners and Gaelic Storm are up there for me. But, for local bands, the Rogue Diplomats are awesome. I usually try to catch them in Bethlehem, PA around St. Patrick's Day. Anyway, thanks again, and Sláinte!"

Steven Rausch emailed a photo: "Listening to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, made this traditional Guinness beef stew on St Patrick's Day (and your birthday). Slainte."

Sean Morris emailed: "Hi, loving the podcast! You mentioned that listeners should submit music from female musicians/singers for future consideration. I'd like to draw your attention to banjoist Angela Usher from Manchester, England.

Angela is a contemporary of musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, the Farrell's, Dezi Donnelly, Angelina Carberry, John Joe and Grace Kelly, etc who grew up learning and playing together in the 80's/90's in Manchester.

She released her first album 'The Gort Mile' last year which has some lovely tunes and songs (some her own pieces). It's a measure of the regard she is held in that she had musicians such as Mike McGoldrick, Colin Farrell and John Carty collaborating with her on the Album. (I think Mike McGoldrick may have produced it)

Angela is also involved with a cross community (Irish and Jewish) music project 'Amid the murk over the Irk' as a performer/composer/arranger. This is quite an interesting project which has brought gems such as this version of The Butterfly to us

Angela also host several sessions in Manchester. Actually worth mentioning Grace Kelly here as well, former All Ireland whistle champion, sister of bodhran player Jon Joe Kelly who hosts another four sessions in Manchester. We have a strong female contingent of musicians here and it's not unknown for men to be in the minority at sessions here.

Anyway, hope you enjoy Angela's album. Keep up the good work with the podcast."

I hope you're doing amazing despite the Coronavirus and the social distancing that's taken over all of our lives. I know it sucks, but I hope you are safe and healthy.

On the bright side, there were a LOT of opportunities to hear Celtic music over the past couple o'weeks despite St Patrick's Day being effectively closed. And I keep hearing about more musicians going live. So make sure you check the news of your favorite bands. See who's playing and watch one of their shows.

And if you're able, help them out. Buy some music or merch, send them a tip. Tell them thanks for all of the music they create.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!

Oh! And we got a bunch of new patrons this month. We hit the $700 milestone on Patreon. That means I'm gonna plan a 2-hour special of instrumental Celtic music with minimal talk and a ton of amazing music.

    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

We're getting closer to 1000 ratings on Apple Podcasts. Yeah. I said ratings. Looks like I messed up when I said reviews. But that's still brilliant. Just 17 left. Go give your review.

A quick additional note about St Patrick's Day. I know it sucked that it was effectively shut down. I think we need to make Halfway to St Patrick's Day as big St Paddy's Day should've been this year. So go talk to your local pub or Celtic organizations. We have just over 5 months to plan. Let's make it happen on September 17th!

Oh! And I want send out a huge thanks to Lady Susan of Thunder on the Plains. She organized an impromptu St Patrick's Day virtual festival on Facebook and Instagram. Some of these concerts are still available to watch online.

I discovered the Gothard Sisters, who are from my town, right here on your podcast. Well, I really decided to support your podcast because you have expressed on many occasions your support for diversity in Celtic music and you have highlighted many female and LGBT artists. This touched me especially as many in these underrepresented groups struggle to find a voice. Thank you and keep up the great work. A devoted listener."

FFdaveJL posted on Apple Podcasts: "My wife and I are taking a two week trip to Ireland this year and listening to this podcast has really got me excited for our trip, as if I wasn't excited already! I have strong Irish roots with my O'Reilly side of the family and this podcast is great for discovering artists and songs I haven't heard before."

Old Dude posted: "Longtime listener now exploring other podcasts with emphasis on Celtic music rather than modern social justice causes. Unfortunately this podcast is no longer a relaxing stroll along the high road or the low road to the shores of Loch Lomond. 3 Star rating reflects excellent music and too much SJW discussion."

Daniel Joseph reviewed: "You know a good heart when you hear one. Great music through each week. What else do you want?!"

Linda Pavlich emailed: "Hello! I just pledged to your podcast. I have been wanting to become a "patron" of the podcast since I first came across it two years ago, and I finally did it!

I am of Irish heritage on both sides of my family, but we never really talked about it when I was growing up. I am of the generation that was supposed to be a "melting pot." My grandparents actually changed their names, to keep their ethnicity hidden. Still - I have always loved Irish music - either makes you want to dance, or cry - so full of emotion. So - when my husband and I joined our local Recreation Center and started working out regularly, my son told me I should look for interesting podcasts to make the exercising easier. When I started searching for podcasts, yours came up - I tried it, and I loved it! Yay!

My husband listens to talkie podcasts, and my son is always giving me suggestions (Stuff You Should Know), but I just love your musical offerings. I have purchased some of the music, and listen to it on a playlist, but I really like the variety of the podcast. It sometimes even "makes my day." Thank you so much for your upbeat presentation. It is especially important now - in the sometimes hateful political climate in our country these days, to remember that we all come from somewhere else, and our various perspectives and cultures can enrich our lives, if we treat each other with respect and joy. I think you do that. Thank you so much for the pure pleasure your podcast brings."

As I listen to this great music, I am digging out of a very cluttered home office. The upbeat music is keeping me going as I tackle this rather daunting task. No pics - nobody should see the mess I have!" Helen Withers emailed: "Hi from Helen Withers in Falcon, Colorado. We attended the Larkspur, Colorado Renaissance Festival in the last two years. We have repeatedly sat in the audience to see, sing with(from the audience) and enjoy a musical trio called "Music the Gathering Band" They have at least one CD, & recently finished at the Brevard RenFaire. You may like them for one of your podcasts." She sent another email: "Also, there's a band from one of the Carolina states, called Syr. We saw them live in Estes Park, Colorado & really enjoyed their music too. Thank you, Helen Withers in Falcon Colorado."

Miranda Persson emailed a photo from Malmö, Sweden: "Hi Marc! Want to share what I do while listening to your podcast. Walking 15k on Saturday or Sunday mornings before breakfast. Unfortunately, the episode doesn't cover the whole walk. But the great Irish music gives me energy for an hour or so! Cold this morning, about 2°c. The winter is approaching. Anyway, thanks for a great podcast and thanks for being an eminent host!"

John Adams emailed: "Hi Marc!I've been a fan of your podcast for about a year now, thanks to some local friends who pointed me your way. I've also been curiously following the issue of diversity which has been an issue of debate on your show this summer. I was surprised that you had had some backlash, as many people were, about the promotion of women in celtic music. And then, I was very proud of how you handled the situation...and now, very excited to hear that you're planning an LGTBQ edition next year, with a call out for entries.

I'm proud to say that our little celtic group here, in Salt Lake City, is quite diverse for being a small circle of close friends who love practicing and performing Irish and Celtic music as often as we can. We include a female bodran player (straight, married to our flutist), straight flutist, a gay fiddler (me!), a single male guitarist and our newest, amazing addition of our singer, who is both gay and black. It's never been our intention to push the 'diversity', however; we just let it be noticed (if at all).

In any case, we would love to eventually be part of your music, whether it is for the Diversity issue or any others. I can point you to our Facebook page and Soundcloud, but we are currently in the process of arranging and getting to the studio to record new pieces that include our singer. Hopefully you can get a small taste of our sound from what we currently have, and when we have our new songs available, I'll certainly make them available. I feel that we've been making a lot of progress with our sound and am excited to get the updated recordings done soon!

Cheers, and I hope we will be able to provide you with some pleasant tunes soon"

Tim Zierer emailed: "Hi Marc, first of all, a big thank you for producing your amazing Celtic music podcast. I'm so in love with it! I'm traveling in my motorhome since the beginning of last year through Canada and USA and had often listen to your podcast on amazing places in the nature with awesome views, ocean, lakes, forest, rain forest, desert, snowy mountains etc. and all the other wonders from our mother earth. In moments when I'm enjoying this good life, listening to the Celtic music makes the moment perfect. no other music better fits to my love of nature as your good selection. Thank you and very best greetings from Utah, United States. Tim, 29 (originally from Germany)"

I am often high up on ladders painting houses while listening but today I am working on remodeling my living room! Keep those tunes rolling! Thanks again for what you do!"

Wesley Combs emailed: "Working my way through one of my final Fridays at my corporate desk job before moving back to the mountains of Southwest Virginia and returning to the family business.

I just found the podcast this week and I am really enjoying it! I've been diving into Celtic music after Ancestry.com helped me track my heritage back to Scotland in the 1700s. The Southwest Virginia region was a popular place for Scots-Irish to settle because it reminded them of home. In fact my home town is named "Dublin". Thanks!"

Tom Cochran emailed a photo: "Hi Mark, Listening to show #442 while printing invitations to our upcoming Burns Night Dinner. We have hosted this in our community for 15 years now and it has grown from 10 people in our living room to 50 or so in a local hall. We invite friends, some whom are musicians or actors to participate by reciting Robert Burns poetry or singing songs. Some sing other Scottish or Irish songs or present their own songs poetry. It's also a pot luck with lot's of great food ( I provide the haggis.) and drink. There's dancing and laughing and a wonderful sense of community. I know Burns Nights come in various forms from very serious to very silly but I recommend that everyone should experience one.

They usually happen around his birthday, January 25 and they happen around the world so you can usually find one nearby.

On a different topic, you read a letter on the show by a lady who attended a Highland Games. She was asking what the event was where the hay stuffed bag was thrown with the pitch fork. It's called the Sheath Toss.

Thanks again for all you do to promote Celtic culture."

Second, you had every right to defend your friend/guest host from inappropriate and mean-spirited comments. Also, as someone who has listened to the podcast since sometime during its first year of existence, I think it should be pretty obvious by now that listening to all aspects of Irish and Celtic music and exploring all aspects of the culture has always been what this podcast is about. It seems to me that if you were to bow to the desires and wishes of these internet trolls, you would be going against the very well-established tenets that your podcast has always been based on.

This isn't whatever it is these trolls are trying to turn it into. In fact, the only people who are trying to politicize your podcast appear to be those trolls themselves, as far as I can tell. I will continue to listen to and support the podcast for as long as it goes on, and I want to thank you for all that you do to make it such a great podcast."
