I am pre-recording this episode. I should be heading to Venice, Italy to stay the night, about the time you get to hear this show as part of my Celtic Invasion Vacations. If you want to know how the trip is going, I put together a page at CelticInvasion.com where you can see follow links to every place I am posting new content, including podcasts, videos and of course, photos from the invasion.

Since I'm in one of the most famous sea ports in the world, I thought I'd highlight "Maid on the Shore". I'm doing it a wee bit different though. You'll hear the title track in a moment. But then, nearly every artist singing a song in this show, and several of the instrumental artists too, has a recording of "Maid on the Shore" as well. I want to recommend that you check them all out.

You can follow the artist links in the shownotes to find out more about them as usual.

Tim Sommer emailed: "Hi Marc. I haven't used spotify, don't use amazon, and minimal itunes. Try to buy music from the artist or other collections, like Ossian.

Most of all, I listen to your podcasts to specifically hear other artists and new music! I've been in the rut of listening to (and enjoying) the main stays of Irish and Scottish music. Wanting to know what else is out there. You are the answer. Love your show."

    Michael Vitagliano emailed: "Hey Mark,

My wife and I have been listening to your podcast for the past six months and have fallen in love with celtic music as a result. We just got back from two weeks on the emerald isle and spent our time traveling in the car listening to hours of your podcast.

I wanted to chime in about your new Spotify playlist and your concerns about how it might affect the podcast. While in Ireland, I noticed a pretty apparent lack of music shops that carried trad music albums. The places I did manage to procure a few cd's, I received excellent guidance however my favorite album that I came back with is Flook's Ancora, which was surprisingly not recommended. I learned of this band via your podcast.

The bands you play are amazing, but it's hard to listen to and support them if you don't know they exist, which, without your podcast I definitely would not be familiar with Flook. Spotify has it's negatives, but reaching listeners across the globe has got to be worth it. And your providing that avenue I think will gain even more podcast listeners, and notoriety for the artists. Thanks for everything you do! Can't wait for the next episode!"

Diana Stanley posted on the Facebook comments: "I listened to this show while exploring a remote park in Lawrence, Kansas. So basically, it was the perfect music choice."

Woodland Folk emailed about the Women's song episode with one word: "Amazing"

Mary Graham emailed: "Hi Mark, I've been listening to Celtic music since I was a kid, as it was a favorite of my dad, so I was thrilled when I recently discovered your podcast. I listen to podcasts a couple hours per day because the commute to my kids' school is so long I spend a couple hours per day on my cargo bike. I can't really take a selfie while riding so you'll just have to imagine me rocking out or Singing along to your amazing compilations while whizzing through the beautiful Dutch dunes and woods on my electric cargo bike, often with two little girls in front in the cargo part...it makes my commute SO much fun so a big thanks to you! Greetings from the Netherlands, a great Place to be despite its deficit of Celtic music."

Max Flight emailed: "I was listening to Libsyn's The Feed podcast and heard your immediately identifiable voice talking about chapters. Even though it takes more production time, I've started using chapters in my podcast. I overruled my co-hosts who thought it would make it too easy for listeners to skip content. My logic is whatever makes it easier for listeners to get value is good. If they skip a segment in an episode and concentrate on what they want to hear, great! That's better than them unsubscribing because they are tired of listening to stuff they don't care about. As for your show (which I'm very fond of, by the way), I've hoped for chapters because I could easily re-listen to songs. Sometimes I'm listening to an episode and I'd really like to go back and re-listen to a piece. Maybe it was so good I want it again. Maybe I was distracted and didn't realize until half way through that I've missed something wonderful. Chapters would make that super-easy. Anyway, just my thoughts."

Brian McReynolds emailed a photo from episode #460: "Working on some edging for our fire pit/raised planter area in our yard. Your podcast makes a somewhat tedious job more enjoyable."

Sarah Fletcher emailed last year: "Hi Mark, I just signed up on your Patreon. I've been listening for a long time and decided it was time to pay back for all of that great music. I discovered the Gothard Sisters, who are from my town, right here on your podcast. Well, I really decided to support your podcast because you have expressed on many occasions your support for diversity in Celtic music and you have highlighted many female and LGBT artists. This touched me especially as many in these underrepresented groups struggle to find a voice. Thank you and keep up the great work. A devoted listener."

Phillip More emailed: "Hello mark, I've been listening to your podcast music for I don't remember how long , I've tracked my family tree back to 1463 to Ireland and lately I have picked up a new hobby , I make cigar box guitars electric /acoustic 3 string and 4 string , I was wondering if any of the bands you work with have ever used them thank you for your time"

Jeffrey Adelsberger emailed: "Marc, Thank you for your great podcast. I discovered while doing my yearly search for music to add to my collection to prep for St. Paddy's. I was able to get the music offered easily.

I grew up in a family that appreciated bands like the dubliners and I Grew to appreciate trad before expanding my tastes with more rock oriented Irish stuff (Pogues to drop kick Murphys and such). Gaelic Storm and Cean are two bands that probably represent my current listening interests best. I recently got into Coig after seeing them at the Maryland Irish Festival. We had the pleasure to visit Ireland last summer and I was gearing up to doing a heavy St Pats week before everything went south. This podcast has helped deal with it."

Brad Thompson emailed photos: "Good evening, Mark! My wife and I listen to your podcast all the time, whether it's driving to visit family, or just to chill in the living room. I've taken up home brewing, specifically mead, and naturally listen while working on it. Unfortunately, shipping alcohol is a nightmare, but if you can get to North Texas, I promise to leave you a bottle on our porch (because distancing, sorry). Thanks for all your hard work."

    W. Ed Harris emailed: "Hey Marc! I just signed up to become a Podcast Patron.

I think it's wonderful what you are doing and I am going to make every effort to be more engaged/supportive! I am a Celtic multi-instrumentalist and do everything myself throughout the recording/release process. I will be releasing my 8th album within the next few weeks and I have 100+ YouTube videos out. I believe you may have featured me in the past in that we follow on FB Page as well. I also had a tune aired on Celtic Roots Podcast very recently and wanted to take this opportunity in sending you the video link on the tune as well.

Again, Thanks so much for all you do and I look forward in getting more immersed in this wonderful culture (my heritage as well)! Sláinte my friend!"

Charlie Hunt emailed a photo: "Hi Marc, I absolutely love the show and am so proud to be a Patreon. Every week, your show brings me and my very good dog Rhody so much joy and contentment. Just look how relaxed he is! Your show is one of the best parts of our week, and I'm so thankful we have someone carrying on these positive, welcoming and inclusive Celtic traditions. PS - as much Runa as possible, please! Best, Charlie (and Rhody)"

Eric emailed some videos from his home: "Hi Marc. From time to time I listen to your podcast, which i think is really awesome - bringing the finest Irish and Celtic music to us and the world. A few episodes ago you asked about a possible location to go for. For quite some time I thought the region I live in could be a place you would like, but I always threw this thought away - not this time.

It is a very historical and very interesting place, but not as famous as Ireland or Scotland. Although the country looks a little similar and the music is also not far off. We even have our own dialect "Plattdeutsch" which is recognized as its own language.

I'm sure, now you are excited. I live in the northern part of Germany ca. 4km from the danish border, where I travel each day to work. In the past, this region often changed between Germany and Denmark. Originally it is the home of the Vikings with its trading center Haithabu (Hedeby in English), located at the end of the "Schlei", which is a fjord.

Haithabu is still a location, but nowadays it is a museum including a historical village and it belongs to the city of Schleswig.

Here, you can make yourself a picture of my home region, the Schlei: Video, Hedeby, World Heritage page.

There are some clubs in this region that keep the old way of living alive like in the village of Haithabu or in Wallsbüll (Valsbøl in danish) where each year the battle of Wallsbüll is shown.

There are some bands that play music in our dialect, but they are hard to find e.g. on YouTube. The local radio station may help to find them. Three times a week, in the evening this radio station broadcasts in our local dialect including such bands.

Hope you find my notes interesting. If you have questions, just let me know.

Slainte and have a great weekend!"

I also am a board member of the Celtic Music Association, which has been bringing four or five concerts to Des Moines per year since 1992. Our current season includes Doolin', Old Blind Dogs, Calan, High Time, and just this last weekend, La Vent du Nord.

I was there for Christmas and New Year visiting my brother and we went to Liverpool, Belfast, Glasgow and Inverness. You might say this was my own Celtic Invasion :-).

We were in a Hootananny at Inverness for dinner when the musicians began to arrive, and then we couldn't leave until it closed. There I also upped my English to "Drunken Glaswegian" Level :-D (English is not my mother language)

Feel free to use any of the videos; it's all public. The musicians names are in the video descriptions. And if you could give me a hand with the tune titles, I would be much appreciated. Slàinte"

I've been listening to the show when I'm at work. Right now I'm working on inventory data entry (transferring products from the store to the website and logging all that)

I listen to at least one episode whenever I'm at work and it always makes my day better. Love the show, love the music, and I appreciate getting able to find out about so many great bands! I'll support you all once my next paycheck comes in. Best, Deanna (and Laura the Norwegian)"

Marshall Blosser emailed: "Hello from Newfoundland. Hey Marc, So we landing here in Newfoundland a little two months ago. Still waiting on my work visa so I have the dosh to go visit all the Irish pubs in town. There is such a strong Irish influence here that there is still an Irish brogue here. Have you ever thought of doing an Celtic Invasion Vacation to the parts of Canada that the the Celts immigrated to? The traditions and sounds that they brought over have been kept alive (if slightly modified) here in St John's, Newfoundland. I think it would make for a great tour.

I'm still hoping to create own (Marc Gunn inspired) Irish music podcast here to help promote the incredible music from the Rock. I've been taking note on how you do you podcast and looking into the nuts and bolts of crafting my own. I will steer bands your way too, as you would have an even wider audience to share the music with. Anyway, I hope all goes well with you. "

Peter Wood emailed photos: "Marc, this letter has been a long time coming because the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast has been a fixture of my life for almost a third of it.

Back in 2011 I came to Austin, Texas for an internship to cap off my time in college, and I went looking for podcasts to fill my time walking to the bus stop, waiting for the bus, and riding to and from my internship. I had been listening to The Signal podcast at the time, and their appreciation of your Firefly songs led me to discover your podcast. The highlight of that summer was a July Fourth afternoon walking the trail down Lady Bird Lake while listening to the latest Irish and Celtic Music Podcast.

I returned home to Indiana, but I continued listening to your podcast while commuting to work and especially while taking my autistic brother on laundromat trips.

I moved back to Austin and I continued to play the podcast. For a while, part of my next job involved checking the new stock into inventory in the morning, while my coworkers worked around me, and the podcast was a natural fit for something to listen to with open speaker as I worked.

Two years ago I met Jessica, and the podcast quickly became something we could listen to while in the car on our outings. She's from El Salvador and has a passion for music, but she's still not very comfortable with English, so it's something we can enjoy together. I think we'd both appreciate an episode featuring Spanish- and Galician-language songs.

I'm finally finishing this email I started over a month ago because I wanted to add that two days ago as I'm writing now, Jessica and I listened to the podcast as we drove across town to the courthouse to get married, and then to the party room for the reception. I'm attaching a few photos of the day.

For a decade, your show has been the soundtrack of my life, and now our life together. Sláinte, saludos, and see y'all from Austin, Texas."

    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

Irish & Celtic Music Live Streams. Live stream concerts seem the way of the world right now. But the biggest challenge is finding out who's doing them. I haven't seen a resource for Celtic concerts. I am trying to make one available. I set up a Google Calendar. Celtic artists can add their own events to the calendar to share their live streaming concerts. View the calendar here.

I created a blog about how to support Celtic artists in the time of COVID-19. It's actually not a bit different from how to support artists at any time. Read it here.

THANK YOU PATRONS OF THE PODCAST!Because of Your kind and generous support, this show comes out every week. Your generosity funds the creation, promotion and production of the show. It allows us to attract new listeners and to help our community grow.

As a patron, you get to hear episodes before regular listeners. When we hit a milestone, you get an extra-long episode. You can pledge a dollar or more per episode and cap how much you want to spend each month over on Patreon.

Your contribution also allows us to support Celtic non-profits like the Middle Tennessee Highland Games & Celtic Festival on September 12-13 and the Texas Scottish Festival on October 16-18.

A special thanks to our newest patrons: Andrew D, Thom M, Jennifer K, J Devine

You can become a generous Patron of the Podcast on Patreon at SongHenge.com.

A bunch of Celtic musicians joined Patreon since the pandemic started. It's a great site for artists as well for podcasts. But how do you find them? I published a blog a couple weeks ago with links to all of the Celtic patreons pages I could find. You'll find a link in the shownotes. If there's an artist missing, please let me know.

TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. We get to know the region through its culture, history, and legends. You can join us with an auditory and visual adventure through podcasts and videos. Michael Finlay emailed on Facebook: "Hi Marc, so I've been trying to plan a trip to the UK and Ireland for my daughter and I, but I'm a bit worried about how Brexit is going to work out over there. But this show helps to keep my hopes up that I'll be able to show my little girl where her grandfather grew up, and get to really understand the centuries long story of her family. But in the mea time, come to Memphis, we have great food, music, and it is the home of The King, just saying... Keep up the good work."

Jordan Reeder emailed photos: "Hey Mr. Gunn, just sharing an update! My wife and I are having our first baby. It's a girl! We are organizing the nursery during this pandemic... what a time to have a kid!

We're listening to the podcast while prepping the nest! Our sweet dog Luna is just hanging out with us and enjoying the music too!"

Brett Thomasson emailed on Facebook: "What's the best way to check out samples of the new CD's in the post now that CDBaby has closed its online store?"

Theron Statler messaged on Facebook: "Hello Marc, I ran across this actually on a Scythian comment. Lol....I would like to know if you play other folk music that has some Celtic influences but not necessarily a straight forward Celtic band? The band/music I have is Scarecrow Jack out of the Ohio Valley area. I can send a little video I put together of a song written inspired by Bar Harbor, ME and another I wrote a few years ago about one day a year Irish..lol

If not what you are interested in I understand but maybe you would know someone else that could give us some airplay? All the best."

Ugar Orak emailed: "Hi from Turkey:) I just discover your podcasts and i love it. Thanks for that. I would like to ask why i can't find the podcast on spotify. will you come to spotify?"

Bryan Lewis emailed: "I have been listening through your podcast episodes every day while I work. Best collection of irish music out there! But all of a sudden, Spotify no longer has your podcast!! When I click the "Listen on Spotify" buttons on your site and facebook page a spotify page comes up with [object] [object] and doesn't open spotify. Am I doing something wrong? has it been removed? I found you in Apple podcasts but there are no episodes after 10/2019. So worried I'm not going to get to listen to the last 6 months! Thanks!"

I told Bryan about our free iPhone and Android app.

"Ooooh! An App! Fantastic. Sorry about the spotify thing. ?? THANK YOU!!! Just finished downloading it. brilliant. I like having a dedicated app for you even better. Thanks for the great work and giving me a soundtrack for my life. ??"

Craig Backus emailed: "Marc, I've been wondering about listening to and supporting my favorite artists.... I have a pretty wide taste in music, and I often buy albums (albeit from Apple) but the whole album....

Since I'm a prime member, I keep getting ads from Amazon Music that their app includes access to millions of songs for $10 a month! I'm sure artists see some benefit from it, but I don't know. For example, I saw that Lucinda Williams has a new album out. I've never actually bought any of her music, but have heard her many times on Tom Petty radio on SiriusXM. I went to her website to get a feel for how she sells music, and she's basically included links to every music streaming and download site.

I thought that artists might make more from direct sales, but it doesn't seem like they are set up for that. Perhaps it's more cost-prohibitive to have someone process orders than to just wait for streaming royalties and to go out on tour?

I don't know...... I'd be interested in knowing what you think.......

PS I really loved the discovery of "Jiggy" last week. The combination of Celtic music with world beats is different and pretty cool. I bet it will be coming to a scifi show soon! Perhaps a new bar beyond the ring in the Expanse?"

We finally hit a huge milestone on Patreon last month. The show now pulls in about $700 per episode. The money goes pays for a lot of things including my time in producing the show. But the big reason I wanted to hit that goal was because it allows us to reach more Celtic music fans. Yes. I do spend money to advertise the show on Facebook. We get a lot of new listeners because your generosity helps pay for that. That's one of the big reasons I was so happy to hit this milestone.

Because we hit it, I told patrons that I would give them a two-hour instrumental Celtic music special. That's what we are doing today. Of course, it actually wasn't ONE two-hour special. I gave you another one a couple weeks ago. So your generosity funded FOUR bonus hours of Celtic music. So let me start by saying thanks.

And I'll stop there too. Because this episode will be less talk and more music. So let's get started.

    BREAK

If you want to find more about the artists you just heard, please make sure you go to the shownotes at CelticMusicPodcast.com. I list the time that each artist and song is played so that you can easily find out who you're listening to. I also share album names URLs of the artists so you can support them and by buying their music.

Greetings from Georgia! just wanted to thank you for all you do! Your podcasts help encourage me to go on walks and stay in shape. I took the first pic while I was listening. The second picture is of a friend and I celebrating St.Patrick's a few days early."
