Chris Dial emailed on Facebook: "Hey Marc! I really love the podcast! I'm actually here in Ireland doing an internship on an archaeological site, Blackfriary Dominican Friary, here in Trim, County Meath, and listening to episode 412, Galway Shawl, while working today! Anyway, just wanted to say I really enjoy the podcast and hope your travels in Star Wars are out of this world! Sláinte!"

Sean Lightholder emailed on Facebook: "What's up Marc. I heard you call out for female pipers back on your Fight Like a Celtic Woman episode. My good friend and fellow Irish musician Autumn Rhodes was posting a new female Uilleann piper every week there for a while in an effort to raise awareness of how many talented female pipers are out doing their thing. I'd reach out and say you were referred by me to see if she could point you in the right direction ??"

Elle Clark emailed: "Hi Marc, I really appreciated your statement on diversity! I don't know if you've already done this in the past but I've been thinking for a while to suggest a queer-themed episode. I thought maybe it would be "too political" or something... guess not! I'd really love to hear an episode featuring queer songs and/or queer artists. If you can't gather enough there's always the old standby of love songs originally sung by one gender being covered by the other without changing the pronouns. This could be a good episode for June which is pride month in the US, or maybe there is an important date in Ireland that would suit."

Denis Konouck emailed: "Welcoming you to Atlanta. A great place to live. I moved from DC to Decatur Ga in 1992 to be around for the 1996 Atlanta Olympics. Never moved back.

    Three random Celtic items.

    1) WRFG (FM 89.3) has a long-running Celtic music show broadcasting every Sunday 5-7pm

    2) The Marlay House in Decatur GA is our best local Irish pub. The pub used to have a weekly Irish music session but I think that has gone dormant. One of the best pubs to get a pint, watch rugby and football (soccer) and get some trad food. Good place for St. Patrick's Day with live music. Bonus is that the Marlay has its own fish n' chips food truck that goes to outdoor festivals.

    3) Mac McGee on Decatur square is another good Irish pub with a large selection of irish whiskey. The pub occasionally has Irish music.

Decatur itself has some of the best restaurants and bars in the Atlanta. I particularly recommend the Brick Store Pub (best beer selection in US) and Chai Pani (great Indian cuisine). Wishing you a smooth relocation"

Sam Vermeulen emailed on Facebook: "Just discovered this show on spotify. I'm on the 3rd episode non stop . Thanks for doing this."

Nancy Klein emailed a photo: "Dear Mark, I am an American woman who loves your show. I listen to it in Spain, where I live now. We used to live in Ireland where I really enjoyed listening to music there. So your show brings Ireland back to me. Here are three photos of the Dingle Pennisula in Ireland, where you will be going on your upcoming trip with fellow Celtic music lovers. With appreciation for all that you do"

Hester emailed: "Good day. My name is Hester I am from South Africa. I like Celtic music and I was looking for a station that plays Celtic music. I came across your podcasts and I love it so much.

This is really my favourite podcast to listen to even though I don't get to all of them, it is the only thing that I listen to on TuneIn radio. I absolutely love bagpipes, making your podcasts even more special. Thank you for keeping traditional music alive. (Even if it is not my culture) Keep up the good work."

Adriana Sanroman emailed: "Hello from Mexico! I have enjoyed your podcast from the very first year and I really did love the last episode with Jesse Ferguson. In fact, the guest episodes have been amazing. I usually listen to you while working, I work as an archaeological conservator in a field lab in the middle of this hectic city. Thanks for the amazing work and go brágh!"

Beth Hlabse emailed: "I just wanted to thank you, Marc, for episode 418. I really needed something positive in my life right now and this episode definitely was that. Peace"

Kim Knebel emailed: "Dear Marc, Thank you for the countless hours you give to creating these podcasts, keeping up your newsletter and all the other things you do and are involved in. I want to say "bravo" to you for calling out whoever the arse was that had something bad to say about the guest host(ess), Susan, and your efforts to support FairPle. Good music is good music no matter who is playing. Sad but true, women are misrepresented in many venues, have been for quite some time. My mother, who would be 105-6 were she alive, couldn't be the textile designer she wanted to be, because that was a man's domain in her era. So, I thank you and all those who are working to gain more recognition for women in the arts and in general. Slainte!"

three cheers for the intelligent and compassionate. very well said and super congrats on your crowd-funding and the release of your music - that is awesome! make sure when you tour Canada you stop in Kingston"

Ryan Ferris emailed some solidarity: "Marc, When I heard about the belittling of the Women of Celtic Music, I felt horrible that such a thing could happen. Whoever disturbed the growth of the community we've developed here should be disgusted with themselves. Thanks to Susan of Thunder on the Plains and the support you've given her, I will be buying the latest album from each artist on that 'Women of Celtic Music' episode. I hate to hear of such a thing happening to her and her peers and hope that, because of our actions, the world becomes better and more accepting."

James Slaven emailed a photo: "Excellent episode (Celtic Invasions)! As always, of course.

I just returned from Cape Breton, Nova Scotia where they have wonderful Celtic culture. Right now, as I listen, I'm enjoying my first wee dram of Canadian whisky (spelled without an 'e,' but not called Scotch) from Glenora Distillery, aged in ice wine barrels. It's excellent. Also, if Natalie the ethno-musicologist wouldn't mind sharing links to her work, I'd love to read it, being an amateur folklorist and published musicologist.

Also, cheers on The Year of the Celtic Woman! Some of us appreciate it and love artists of all genders. Slainte!"

    I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK

What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com

Sarah Marshall emailed: "Marc, thanks so much for the passionate defense of women's music. I am sorry that one troll, at least, evidently thinks that male artists only succeed if female artists are ignored! The world needs great Celtic music from all kinds of people."

Mark R emailed a negative comment regarding my Diversity of Celtic Music episode: "Marc, I was very saddened to hear the comments in episode #418. You title contains the magic word "diversity", yet you end up wishing a "fond farewell" to long time listeners who disagree. Because someone thinks you are deluded, does not mean that they must be a bigot. And to bring electoral politics into the podcast only reinforces the stereotype that a Celt can never avoid a good bar brawl. I would never ask you to apologize -you have done nothing wrong, nor so far as I am concerned did Susan- but I would hope to hear a hand of outreach extended to your listeners who may not be signed up for these politics. Politics which are, after all, as disgusting to us, as ours are to you."

Thank you Mark. I appreciate you writing me. While I'm gonna guess we disagree politically, this is not about partisan politics.

    This about serving our community.

From the beginning, I have been "changing the way you hear celtic music" and providing the best service for my listeners, "celebrating celtic culture thru music".

My goal is to open the minds of Celtic music fans to the diversity of Celtic music. It's not all traditional Irish music. It's not all African fusion, bluegrass, alternative rock or whatever. It runs the gamut.

I have a lot of trad music fans who do NOT listen because it's not more trad sounding. I do not recommend this podcast fans who only love trad music.

Sure. You may not like music from celtic women. But this too IS just one aspect.

So to belittle a host, or especially Susan, because she's promoting equality on the podcast, something I've long considered essential to the diversity and goal of this podcast, is disrespectful, no matter what party you belong to.

Again my point is to serve my listeners. If you or others disagree with me. That's fine. I can respect that.

But I also know in the long run, you will not appreciate this show. Especially going forward. Because obviously this is a topic that needs further exploration. So I will bring it up at length.

My goal is to promote the diversity of Celtic music, like I always have. But if someone refuses to open their hearts to that diversity, they will Not enjoy the show. And I don't want to waste their time.

So yes, I stand by my statement.

My questions then for you are

Will you choose to support the diversity in the show, Whether the artists are black or white, straight or gay, Scottish or Welsh, Indian, Australian or Japanese, male or female or transgender?

Will you support Celtic women and other marginalized aspects of Celtic music and culture Because they are a part of that diversity?

Will you stand against people who belittle the show because they disagree with the mission of the podcast?

If you agree with all three of these statements, then I am very honored to have you a part of our Celtic community.

    If not, that's OK.

But again, in the long run, you will not enjoy the show.

I don't want to waste your time listening to a show that will ultimately make you unhappy.

I truly hope your enlightened answers are yes. If not, I wish you a fond farewell.

Natalie Huber-Rodriguez emailed: "Hello! I just wanted to reach out and say how much I love your Podcast. I'm a folklorist and ethnomusicologist who specializes in Irish and Celtic folk music. After returning from living in Ireland a little while ago, I've found myself really missing the trad performances of Irish pub culture and thus, it's really been wonderful to have your Podcast to listen to as a reminder of my home away from home.

Part of my career has been seeking out some of the best traditional Irish and Celtic music performers in the DC metropolitan and greater mid-Atlantic, where I currently live and work, and your Podcast has been great in discovering new and exciting artists from all over. I'm currently working working on a compilation of some of the best and most popular Irish Rebel and IRA songs as part of the upcoming anniversary of the 1916 Easter Rising and the significance that such songs still hold for the people of Ireland and their descendants abroad today. Should you ever need any assistance with anything on your Podcast or would like some additional resources, I'd be more than happy to oblige! Keep up the great work! :) Slainte!"

Ali Sherief emailed a photo: "Hi Marc my name is Ali I'm a freshman I enjoy your podcast. I'm also a member of the cat lovers podcast and a fan of your Irish drinking songs for cat lovers album and I love listening to Celtic music. It helps me through the near death fight between me and cars while riding the bike and good day from California!"

    CELTIC PODCAST NEWS

    * Helping you celebrate Celtic culture through music. My name is Marc Gunn. I am a Celtic musician and podcaster. This show is dedicated to the indie Celtic musicians. In every episode of the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast, I mention "celebrating Celtic culture through music." It's easy to miss the nuance of this mission statement. This podcast is not just about the traditional music of Ireland or Scotland. It is about all of those under-served aspects of Celtic music, and its many forms, from around the globe. It's about the fusion, the change, and the growth of the musical traditions of the Celts.

So I found it disappointing to hear someone attack my guest host Susan J. E. Ritta last week for promoting the women of Celtic music and FairPle, an organization dedicated to giving Celtic women in music a voice. It's both disappointing and rather disgusting.

Women are under-represented throughout the music business, including Celtic music.

If you've spent ANY time studying the music business since it began, like I have, you would know this to be true.

Sadly, some folks feel threatened by those who are marginalized and gain a fair footing.

It happened to the Irish when they first came to American. If you have studied the history of the Celts, you will note the Celts too were marginalized. And when you belittle one marginalized group, you disgrace all of our Celtic culture. You disgrace the history and suffering the Celts endured and overcame.

So let me be clear. The women of Celtic music deserve our support. If you disagree, that's your choice. But I will continue to fight for these amazing women and promote FairPle and any organization that stands up against small-minded people who refuse to change with history.

So whether you're a new listener or long-time, if that's you, I wish you a fond farewell. This podcast is not for you.

TRAVEL WITH CELTIC INVASION VACATIONS Every year, I take a small group of Celtic music fans on the relaxing adventure of a lifetime. We don't see everything. Instead, we stay in one area. Allison Walker-Elders emailed from DC: "Hi Marc,I've been meaning to write this email for weeks! During your episode # 405 (Fight Like a Celtic Woman) I was so moved by Heather Dale's song "One of Us" that I had to stop in the middle of my hour-long run and have a good cry.

The song reminded me of every woman I have ever looked up to in my life, personally or academically or in my career. I don't know if it was intentional on Heather Dale's part, but I was strongly reminded of the 2016 American election-- while I didn't always agree with Secretary Clinton, she would have made a great president and I was proud that she was one of us. Remembering that feeling of pride combined with the devastation of her loss while listening to "One of Us" brought me right back to that moment in the early hours of November 9th, 2016.

Thank you for everything that you do to raise up the voices of underrepresented Celtic musicians and songwriters.I especially appreciated Lady Susan's episode this past week and can't wait to listen to other episodes of her show.

If I were to request anything from your show, maybe it would be a longer episode for workouts--I'll be running a marathon later this summer and plan on listening to your show while I run it in the beautiful mountains of Washington State."

Thank you so much Allison for your touching response. I'm so happy the song moved you. It's become a favorite of my daughter Kenzie too. And I'm quite proud of that.

You are right. There are many voices underrepresented in the Celtic community, especially from Celtic women. I know a quarterly episode is a very small contribution. But I'm proud I can add that into the world. And while I originally planned it just for 2019, I've since changed decided to extend it into the future.

As for the longer workout episodes, may I should add that as a Patreon Milestone--Celtic Marathon Training. That'd be fun.

    THIS WEEK IN CELTIC MUSIC

Welcome to the Irish and Celtic Music Podcast. I'm your guest host, Jesse Ferguson, also known as the Bard of Cornwall on YouTube. I'm a Celtic music performer, recording artist and YouTuber based in Cornwall, Ontario, Canada.

My own music has been featured in the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast over 20 times in the last 10 years, so it's fair to say that our usual host, Marc Gunn, has been a big supporter of my music. I'm very grateful for that support, so when he asked me to guest host an episode, I jumped at the chance.

This episode of the podcast will feature music that has a personal connection for me, from artists who have inspired me in my early folk music days, to those I know personally from my area, to those I've performed with live in venues from Canada's east coast to my original and current province of Ontario.

But, on with the music. First I'll play you "Brennan on the Moor" off my next CD, The Sally Gardens. I had fun arranging the harmonies in the chorus.

"Brennan on the Moor" by Jesse Ferguson from The Sally Gardens

The next two songs are by the now disbanded Cornwall, Ontario group Haggis, that were hugely influential in getting me into Celtic music.

4:18 "Loch Lomond" by Haggis from This Ain't Your Mother's Cooking

9:50 "Medley of Minors" by Haggis from This Ain't Your Mother's Cooking

That was "Loch Lomond" followed by "Medley of Minors" from their 1999 album, This Ain't Your Mother's Cooking, which can be streamed free on Sounclick.com. A couple of the original members of Haggis have also contributed newer material to this episode, including their drummer Jason Mitchell, whose latest group is called Heroes of the Highland. Here are two of their latest recordings:

14:12 "Irish Rover" by Heroes of the Highland from Heroes of the Highland

17:06 "Drunken Sailor" by Heroes of the Highland from Heroes of the Highland

That was "The Irish Rover" followed by "Drunken Sailor" by Heroes of the Highland. The original flute player for Haggis, Brent Santin, has also gone on to do new recordings, and has contributed two to this episode. Here he is performing "A Scarborough Settler's Lament" with Gary Mallon.

20:07 "Scarborough Settler's Lament" by Brent Santin & Gary Mallon from Sounds Like the 19th Century

And here is one of Brent's solo efforts, which incorporates some more electronic elements:

25:00 "Tear Down the Sink, Dear" by Brent Santin

Nick Seguin, lead singer of Haggis, was a major influence on my vocal style for folk music. Another of my main influences is our next artist, Scotsman Jim Malcolm. His former work with the band Old Blind Dogs, and his solo material have been very important for me. He now records with his wife Susie Malcolm, herself a talented musician. The first track here is the Robbie Burns song "A Man's a Man for a' That," followed by a track from Jim and Susie's latest album Spring Will Follow On.

29:32 "A Man's a Man" by Jim Malcolm from Acquaintance

33:33 "Pad the Road" by Jim Malcolm & Susie Malcolm from Spring Will Follow On

That was Jim Malcolm's "A Man's a Man for A' That" and Jim and Susie Malcolm's "Pad the Road."

The region of Eastern Ontario where I reside has a strong tradition of Celtic music, which derives from the huge influx of Scottish immigrants to the region. The tradition here is alive and kicking, and from my early days getting into Celtic music, it has incorporated pride in our past with embracing modern musical approaches. In that spirit, here are two songs from Glengarry, Ontario band Bang on the Ear.

37:37 "The Rising of the 45" by Bang on the Ear from Tales from the Glen

41:40 "Thistle and the Rose" by Bang on the Ear from Songs for Glengarry, Vol. 1

That was "The Rising of the 45" and "Thistle and the Rose" by Bang on the Ear. The next two songs are by another Glengarry, Ontario group, The 2 Paddys. They've long been a fixture of The Glengarry Highland Games, in Maxville, which was a crucial place for nurturing my love of Celtic music. Here are their recordings of "The Foggy Dew" and "The Galway Races."

45:31 "The Foggy Dew" by The Two Paddys

48:45 "The Galway Races" by The Two Paddys

Next we head to Majorca (my-OR-kah), Spain for two tracks from TinWhistler, a duo of brothers whose videos on YouTube I've been a fan of for years. We Celtic podcasters and Youtubers need to support each other, so I was delighted that they were willing to send us these two tracks.

51:18 "Castle Kelly/The Man of the House" by TinWhistler from TinWhistler

54:33 "Toss the Feathers/The Ale is Dear" by TinWhistler from TinWhistler

That was "Castle Kelly" and "The Man of the House," followed by "Toss the Feathers" and "The Ale is Dear" by TinWhistler, from the brothers' first album, available now.

When I lived in the East Coast of Canada, in particular Fredericton, New Brunswick, I met up with musician Bill Toner. We played a regular gig at a little wine bar called The Sour Grape in a small town called Oromocto. We didn't make much money, but it sure was a lot of fun. Here's a song from Bill's latest group, Different Folk.

58:58 "Star of the County Down/Cooley's Reel" by Different Folk from Live

That was "Star of the County Down" and "Cooley's Reel," by Different Folk. I shared the stage with some of its members at least once, and here are a couple of solo tracks from the band's award-winning fiddle player, Katherine Moller.

1:02:34 "The Friar's Walk" by Katherine Moller from Storm Queen

1:05:37 "Sunshower" by Katherine Moller from Storm Queen

That was "The Friar's Walk" and "Sunshower" from Katherine Moller's album Storm Queen.

That brings us close to the end of this guest episode, and I'd like to thank Marc Gunn, the Celtfather, for inviting me to take this on. Now that I've put a show together, I have a better appreciation of just how much work it is. If you appreciate all the hard work that he puts in to promoting independent Celtic music, I'd encourage you to consider becoming a Patron of the podcast on Patreon. Thanks, Marc, for all that you do!

I'd also like to thank the artists who contributed their awesome music for me to include. It's been a fun experience. I'll leave you with another song from my next album, The Sally Gardens. The song is written for my lovely wife, and is likely my oldest complete original. I finally got around to recording it for an album and I hope you like it. Again, this is Jesse Ferguson, the Bard of Cornwall. You can learn more about my work by visiting www.jessefergusonmusic.com. Thanks for listening.

1:09:44 "Me Darlin' Laura-Ann" by Jesse Ferguson from The Sally Gardens
