Dwayne Butcher commented on Patreon: "Wonderful show! Thank you for starting the year off on such a wonderful note! (I have yet to listen to the Jan 3 episode.) Wishing you all the best in 2021. Stay happy and healthy."

Carol E replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Got the music. I just listen so I can't tell you who my favorites are. I did like the running podcast you did even though I don't run. Appreciate your podcast. Thanks much for all the music."

Terry E. asked by email: "Hi Marc ... Will Celtic Music Mag be featuring anything on Leahy and also the band Cécilia (Erin Leahy is also a member of this band as well) ... as they both have new CD's out and Leahy has a Christmas song out too ... it would be great to see/ hear them on your podcasts or magazine. Thank you for taking time to read my rant for the day..."

Trevor N. Teuscher emailed: "Hey Marc, I have something of a request for a song to play on a future podcast, if it is possible. I don't recall if you have ever played any songs by the band Touchstone or not. I wouldn't be surprised if you haven't since they were only active in the early 1980's. However it was lead by the still active and highly influential Tríona Ní Dhomhnaill. On their album, The New Land, is a song titled Susannah Martin. This song brings together two seemingly very different interests of mine: Irish and Celtic Music and the history of the Salem Witch Trials. I have recently been studying a lot about the history of the Salem Witch Trials, since I recently discovered various familial connections to many of the people involved in those historical events. Susannah Martin, the subject of the song, is especially important to me personally, since she is my 10th great grandmother. The song tells her story in a hauntingly beautiful way. Anyway, I don't know how easy it would be to get permission to play songs from a band that hasn't been together for several decades, but if you can, I would be grateful. Slainte, Trevor"

One of my big hopes for this year is to get back overseas for my Celtic Invasion of Loch Lomond. But to make that happen, we have to beat the pandemic, mask up, and get vaccinated.

In the spirit of travel, my graphic designer, Miranda Nelson, suggested this theme--The Road to Anywhere. I picked songs and tunes with a travel theme. Let's hit the road...

Pete from The Bookends emailed: "Hi Marc - thanks so much for featuring us off the top of your podcast this week and for supporting Irish & Celtic music. We're thrilled you bought the record and went on to play it on your show"

Maddy Churchhouse emailed some photos: "Hi Marc, Love the podcast. You mentioned you like pictures so I thought I would send some!

I listened to your Samhain episode and a few others from the backlog whilst wild camping the James Heriot Way (a 52 mile circular walk through Wensleydale & Swaledale) in the Yorkshire Dales for three days over the Halloween weekend. With the whirling leaves and autumn fellsides the podcast set the perfect magical atmosphere. The inspiring music was exactly what I needed to pick me up when my energy started to lag hiking down from the head of Swaledale as the sun set, and your cheerful commentary really kept my spirits high while I was night hiking under the full moon on Halloween night and looking for an appropriate place to pitch up! Thank you for spreading such awesome music."

Sophia MacKay emailed: "Hello Mark! I first found the podcast through my mother, and have been listening for about 6 years now. It's the soundtrack to my 40 minute walk to and from work, and what usually I listen to while I knit.

What prompted me to finally reach out is the latest episode of the podcast. I wanted to make sure you knew Heather Alexander is now Alexander James Adams. He transitioned, and is therefore no longer a "Celtic woman". I don't know myself how to handle dead names when it comes to musicians with work still under their old name, but I'm sure you will do so with grace, considering your commitment to equality and diversity with your podcast."

I did know that of course. I was a big fan of Heather Alexander's work, which is why I reached out to Alex. After getting that emailed, I realized I should've asked Alex before adding Heather to the Celtic Woman show. So I did.

Alexander James Adams responded: "Thanks for playing the music. No apologies needed.

Heather was proud of her femininity. She worked hard at it.??

I tend to refer to her as a separate person, though I show her off vocally when it is needed. (It's taken years to get a good falsetto??) I like to think that I just have her running around in the background, making commentary like they do for movies on the bonus DVD. It's a red head thing!

I'm fairly open with the fact that I transitioned and leave it up to each individual as to how or what they say. You can go with the "faerie tale" if you like; Heather being a changeling returned home and me being a Stolen Child released, or you can be straight with your audience. I trust your judgement.

I'm honoured and happy for you to play the music of the Heatherlands. As the Heir, I keep the magic alive by holding all that has been done equal to all that will be.

Honesty is always fulfilling for me.

Again, thank you for supporting my music, especially this year.

I'm glad you're getting through this still standing and wish you great advancement in the new year!

    Happy Holidays!"

Congratulations to our new President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris. Hopefully our new leaders will bring a lot more stability and kindness for our future.

Nan Griffin emailed: "Hi, I see your other podcasts on there and your music too and was wondering if your podcast, Irish and Celtic Music Podcast, will show up on Spotify anytime soon? Please advise and thanks"

Georgy Grigoryev asked the same question. I told him the same answer I told Nan. He replied: "oh dang! it's a terrible decision from their side! Thanks for the podacst anyway! My favourite one and not like "oh I don't know they are all great" but truly honestly the most loved podcast!"

Teddy Zeitlin emailed: "I just found your podcast. I am in the USA. In my 70s. I always loved folk music. I always found the sound of Irish music to be so comforting, so down to earth. I was in Dublin a couple of years ago, and loved it. Ireland is one of the places I hope to be able to visit again. COVID-19 go away!!!

A couple of years ago while taking my then 8 year old granddaughter to Hebrew school, I put on a local Irish music show in the car. She loved the music. Glad I was able to pass that on to her. She plays violin. Hopefully one day the fiddle."

    1. (Gene) Brewer replied to the Celtic Music Magazine: "Yes, I did retrieve the free tracks and have installed them into my library, which continues to grow. Thank you very much.

A few of my favorite bands/artists that I know names for are:

Slainte (out of Seattle I believe but think they has broke up)

Celtic Fiddle Festival (Kevin Burke is tremendous on the fiddle)

    Chieftains

    Altman

There's lots of artists I like but I don't know or recall exactly their names.

Right now I am living in a small SoCal desert town and there is no Celtic music scene here to my knowledge. this why I stream a lot of music.

I'm retired so my entertainment funds are limited. so I look for the most for the least. Some people call it cheap, I call it frugal. However I'll be getting the bumper sticker offer to help out the cause.

My heritage is Irish (Ussery from County Cork), English, German and Cherokee Indian.

My internet is flaky and sometimes real slow (DSL) like last night. Had trouble streaming the podcast. Looking into getting a better ISP."

It was a rollercoaster of a week here in the States. So I just want you to know, I love you for listening and for supporting the diversity in our Celtic community. It's important to remember kindness in these tough times. So I hope I can bring a smile to your face with more great Celtic music.

You may already know that I include timestamps in each episode. This makes it easier for you to find out who is playing and what the awesome track is.

A few months ago, we started using an app called Forecast which creates chapters to make it even more easy.

I can't find the email. But a month or so ago, someone emailed and suggested that I put the artist name first, instead of listing the song first. I just did that. So now when you look at the show notes, it should be even easier to find out who is playing what track so you can vote for them in the Celtic Top 20.

Brandon Carl emailed a couple photos: "Hello Mark it is nice to meet you. This is my first time messaging you. I have been a long time listener of your podcast and am always a fan of Irish and Celtic music. I am actually in a bagpipe band in Virginia and play the snare drum. What I normally do while listening to your podcasts is play my truck simulator on my PC. Euro Truck Simulator 2. It can be a pretty addicting game. Hope you have a great New Years and talk to you soon! Cheers! *Note:: Band photo was when I used to play the bass drum."

Kristina Arroyo emailed a photo: "I'm working on this piece while listening to your beautiful show, started this on winter solstice."

Scott Selhorst emailed from Dayton, Ohio: "Hello Marc, I have been a fan, a listener, and a supporter for a long time. Listening to episode 491 got me thinking about this. Episode 18 (April 2006) is still one I listen to every so often.

My kids, much younger then, thought 4:15-4:20 was pretty cool. You might think that is a very specific, possibly strange, 5-second range. Listen to it, and you will understand why 4, 8, and 9 year old kids would think that was pretty cool. I cannot recall how I initially found your music, but you introduced me to this genre of music, which I enjoy immensely. Thank you."

Nova Fortier sent a beautifully satirical question: "Mark, I've been listening to your podcast on and off for a couple of years. I enjoy most of your podcasts, your updates on where life finds you. But, when you label something 'female' or 'women' on your podcasts, I am just extremely confused as to why you included any male voices on your latest podcast? I mean, truly, now, why must I endure male voices on a titled podcast to showcase female voices? Looking at all the musical recordings and references throughout history, surely the male ego has been adequately stroked to allow for women to, truly, be able to showcase their own musical abilities without treading on the chrystalline male ego? Sure, you, as a master musician in your own right, can do better, to research an entirely female show when it is marked as such? Yes, that was stroking your fragile male ego, because, after listening to you for so long, I've learned that you need such proddings. Simple male, will you never evolve to meet your female sister, ever?"

Trip McCool emailed: "Marc, I want to thank you for playing "Gravy In The Grave". Both my wife and I had Grandfathers who fought in WWI and suffered poisoning from Mustard Gas. It was tough time for young Irish men who returned to a world with little to no support for the insanities of war. The ravages of the mind, body and soul. My Grandfather Frederick Michael Dougherty, was one of those who "Let the women do the thinking and the men do the drinking." Add four children, the stock market crash, the great depression and 'the old boy' was off for the greener pastures of the mind. When my father said, "You don't know what growing up tough is." he meant it! "You want gravy with your spuds! Sweet Jesus will give ya Gravy in The Grave." Keep your guard up!"

James Martin emailed a photo: "I am frying up some giblet doggy treats while doing some thanksgiving meal prep. Someone in my house is very excited about these treats."

Michael Carey emailed a photo: "always enjoy listening to your podcast when I am out walking my wife's sulcatta tortoise. Here is the pic of Groot the tortoise and Iggy the iguana in West Palm Beach Florida"

In every episode, I ask you to vote for your favorite tracks in that show. It is my great pleasure to share with you the Top 20 Celtic Songs and Tunes of 2020. These tracks were voted on BY YOU! Your vote matters, not just in a democratic election that brings President-Elect Joe Biden to the White House next month. It also matters for creating this incredible list from twenty amazing bands.

2020 was a crazy year. The livelihood of thousands of Celtic musicians vanished in a blink of an eye. Streaming music is more popular than ever. But it pays nothing. I can't help but wonder how many of these incredible artists will continue creating music.

So as you listen to this show, I want you to think about how you can help these amazing artists. In fact, I might throw out a few suggestions during the show.

    I WANT YOUR FEEDBACK

Ye know. I love getting feedback for the podcast. I love hearing what you think of this show and sharing it here. While feedback is great right here, it's also super important in a public setting. Like reviews on iTunes or your favorite podcatcher. It's also hugely important to musicians.

If you enjoy an artist's music, tell someone. You can do it as a review on iTunes or Amazon. You can post how much you love a song on social media. You can email the artist and say thanks.

In the meantime, What are you doing today while listening to the podcast? You can send a written comment along with a picture of what you're doing while listening. Email a voicemail message to celticpodcast@gmail.com

Jason Denen emailed: "Hey Marc, thanks so much for all the celtic Christmas music. This episode had so many wonderful tracks I hadn't heard before. I'm lucky to have a job where I can work from home, but being in the same spot every days gets wearying. It's great to have new music to fill the space. I find most Christmas music that gets played on the radio trends to the same old tracks. I do like the classics, but they get so overplayed during the holidays."

Georgy Grigoryev emailed: "Hi Marc, Is it possible to listen Irish and Celtic music podcast on Spotify? I tried to look for it but there's no results."

Sadly, no but you can enjoy the Celtic Top 20 on Spotify through our Top Irish & Celtic Music Playlist. This playlist has many of the tracks featured on the Celtic Top 20 for the past 15 years. Sadly, it doesn't have all. Some are no longer available. But it has most of them.

J Dickerson saw my moniker and asked: "Ok. What does Celtfather mean?"

Celtfather was a nickname given to me by Les Howard of The Signal Podcast. I was one of the earliest and biggest promoters of independent Celtic music on the internet starting back in 1999. Everyone else was going through the traditional promotional means through radio, magazines and anywhere a publicist would send your material.

I took a different strategy. I created an internet newsletter and website with the Celtic Music Magazine. In 2005, I started the Irish & Celtic Music Podcast. I soon had the #1 most-downloaded podcast for Celtic music in the world. So when I met Les, he came up with The Celtfather moniker. I loved it and started using it to brand myself. Of course, in 2010, it took on new meaning when my first daughter was born.

At the end of November, we hit a HUGE milestone for the podcast. We now have over 300 kind souls who donate to the podcast each and every month. They collectively pledge over $800 per episode to make this show happen. I was already planning a Celtic Christmas Women episode. But because of that milestone, I decided to turn it into a 2-hour special. Plus, I'm adding another 2-hour special next month.

So in this show I'm gonna share Christmas music by women playing Celtic music. That's because women don't get the attention they deserve in the music business in general and in Celtic music either. So I'm gonna highlight these ladies.

Today, we're gonna have a flashback. For the most part these are artists who submitted music many, many years ago. I haven't played them in a while.

Though Runa has a new album out. It's called The Tide of Winter. You can hear them on the Celtic Christmas Podcast. There are currently three episodes now online. I have two more planned. So please subscribe on Apple Podcasts or your favorite podcatcher. You'll find a link to that show in the shownotes.

We hit TWO HUGE MILESTONES this week. First, we now have over 300 Patrons of the Podcast. That is amazing. And I am deeply grateful. In fact, I set a milestone on Patreon such that when we hit that milestone, I would bring you a 2-hour Women of Celtic Christmas music special. That goal was achieved. So look for that episode in two weeks.

But that's not all. We also hit a financial milestone. The podcast now earns over $800 per episode through your generous support. That is absolutely incredible. And it means I can bring you more and better made content. Thanks to folks like Mitchell Petersen who edits the podcast, Miranda Nelson who provides graphics and social media posts and Todd Wiley who manages the Song Henge Podcast and additional social media promotion.

Someone recommended its good background music with a steady tempo thats easy to concentrate to. That is all true, but then I fell in love with it too and look up the artists you mention to find more of their work. Haha"

    John Mahony emailed: "Hi Mark,

I've listened for quite a while and even went back to listen to the early episodes to see what I'd missed! I enjoy the music, and thanks for taking the time and effort to put this together every week!

There wasn't a specific link to email you with my vote for the picture, but I liked the traditional Irish one better than the Americanized Halloween image. Sorry, since I know you put some effort into making that image, but that's it.

Have you heard of Emma Langford? She's brilliant and would be a great addition to the podcast some day.

I could send you a picture of me in front of my Zoom green screen, but it would be rather boring, I think."
