We’re covering a lot in this week’s episode! The dockworkers’ strike is over, and we’re going to unpack how this is impacting the market and inflation. We look into how inflation, historial October market trends–particularly in election years–are influencing the stock market trends. We’re also touching on how our own scarcity mindset impacts our kids’ attitudes towards money. And Linda shares a bit about campaign funding as she’s running for office (hint: it has to do with investing–at least, in the state of Texas).

If you want to join Linda and Gina at the fundraising event in LA, find it here!

Q4: A September stock market recap & market reactions to global conflict, the dockworkers’ strike, and the latest job reports Oct 04, 2024

September is one of the worst months historically for the stock market. But the market actually performed really well–the DOW, the SMP500, and the NASDAQ are all up right now. This is unprecedented! And it’s a good reminder to start your investing journey sooner rather than later!

Several factors are influencing the market as we start October and Q4 of 2024: geopolitical conflicts throughout the world; the latest jobs report; and the dockworkers’ strikes. Just remember: we’re investing for the long term. While the stock market and the economy are influenced by the news day-to-day, hold firm in your investments and try not to make any sudden moves when the market dips or peaks.

Let’s get into it: last week, Fed Chair Powell and the FOMC voted to lower interest rates by 50 basis points. All but one member of the FOMC voted yes on lowering interest rates–and Linda agrees with that single member. She unpacks how the interest rate lowering might impact the economy and the stock market–and the historic context of this decision (spoiler alert: yes, interest rates have indeed been higher in our country’s history!). Linda also explains the terms “dovish” and “bullish” when it comes to attitudes towards the stock market.

September is one of the bumpiest months for the SMP500–especially during an election year. The Harris/Trump debate has sent the Trump Media/DJT meme stock tumbling–and the rest of the market is reacting negatively, too. But don’t forget: we stay calm when we’re investing. Take a beat. The market is doing exceptionally well for the year. Linda also back at how the market has recovered since the pandemic, and examines the latest inflation data.

Linda unpacks capital gains–what they are, and how investors can use them to their advantage. She also discusses how investors use taxes on capital gains to their advantage. As you probably know already, folks who are farther along their financial journeys and have been investing for years are well aware of how to make capital gains work for them come tax season. That said–many of the wealthiest investors use capital gains as something akin to a tax loophole. As a part of her presidential campaign, Vice President Harris is proposing a tax policy aimed at the ultra wealthy, who have been exploiting capital gains for some time. This would also relieve the tax burden of the rest of us somewhat.

As you go farther along your wealth management and financial journey, you’re going to encounter different kinds of investing. Options trading is a certain type of investing, but we encourage you to to have a fair amount of comfort as an investor before you try it. At the very least, you should have a high tolerance for risk before you try it.

Q3: How’s the Economy doing? Using Walmart and Target earnings reports as our guides Aug 23, 2024

So, there are some indicators that our economy is not doing so well… like, inflation is still way up. And our nation is in debt big time. But at the same time, Fed Chair Jerome Powell might not have to hike up interest rates in September. Plus, there are a TON of interventions the powers that be can make before we have a recession. So don’t get it twisted: Linda walks you through all of the data she’s looking at right now.

Linda’s also checking in with two of her very favorite companies: Target and Walmart. Both companies had earnings calls recently, and their reports give us a lot of data about how the economy is doing, and how consumers are behaving. Linda breaks down the data from both companies.

Just don’t forget: we’re on a financial journey, not a sprint. When things get bumpy, we keep calm and try not to make any sudden moves or giant purchases.

From greed to fear to scarcity mindset, investing can be a really triggering experience. Linda discusses how to identify, manage, and process some of the most intense emotions associated with investing.
