    086: Simple ways to make money for your nonprofit you need to know Oct 22, 2020

    My guest today is Janet Cohen. Jan has been a consultant and trainer who has worked with more than 250 nonprofit organizations over more than 20 years. Her focus is on customized services for nonprofits throughout the country for diversification of revenue, earned income, marketing planning, and strategic planning processes. She also serves in Interim Executive positions, especially those with an earned income focus.

    Jan partners with Academies for Social Entrepreneurship as the Lead Social Enterprise Trainer & Coach and has worked with over 75 participating agencies. In addition to her own training/consulting business, Jan was the Director of New Business Ventures at HOPE Services for 3 years, an affiliate consultant with CompassPoint Nonprofit Services in the Bay Area for 6 years, a senior consultant with the National Center for Social Entrepreneurs for 5 years, and Chief Executive Officer of Project HIRED, a nonprofit employment service serving individuals with disabilities, for 10 years.

    She taught classes in the Nonprofit Management Certificate program at San Jose State University and has been a national speaker and trainer at more than 200 meetings and conferences. She has written guest blogs and articles for Social Enterprise Reporter, Nonprofit World, and other publications.

    Ms. Cohen is a member of the Bay Area Interim Executive Director Group and the Alliance for Nonprofit Management's Executive Transition and Leadership Committee. She also currently serves on the Board of CalNonprofits Insurance Services, a subsidiary business of the California Association of Nonprofits.

    Jan has degrees or certifications from the University of Massachusetts, University of Maryland, and the University of California at Santa Cruz.

    085: How are board practices different now? Oct 15, 2020

    My guests today are Gayle Gifford and Mike Burns. Gayle has spent time in the trenches, organizing for peace, environmental, human, and civil rights. She served as Director of Development and Communications at PLAN USA, as Deputy Director/Director of Development and Marketing at Save The Bay, and as Director of Development at CityYear RI before launching her own business in 1996 with master communicator Jon Howard (who also happens to be her spouse).

    Gayle earned the advanced fundraising credential, ACFRE, from the Association of Fundraising Professionals, in 2002. That's a distinction held by only 100 or so fundraisers worldwide. She has an M.S. in organization and management from Antioch University New England.

    Gayle an adjunct instructor at Brown University. She serves as board chair for Blackstone Academy Charter School serves on the Advisory Council for Latino Dollars for Scholars of Rhode Island.

    She lives in Providence, RI with her husband and a cat. She is mom to three adult children who are all also involved in public service.

    Mike Burns began his career as an executive director of a community health center and now has over 20 years' experience as a nonprofit manager. Since 1994 Mike has been an organizational development consultant and partner in BWB Solutions. Since 2017 Mike has been faculty in the University of New Haven's Nonprofit Management Certificate Program. Mike's consulting practice focuses on strategic planning, governance and helping nonprofits assess their readiness for strategic alliances.

    Mike operates an organic farm and has been a professional foster parent for nearly 20 years!

    Mike and Gayle are fellow researchers with Mary on two national studies about nonprofit board leadership conducted through the Alliance for Nonprofit Management. They have conducted their own research in New England on how the pandemic has affected board practices, which is the topic of today's episode.

    We discuss what they learned from surveying over 100 nonprofits about how the pandemic is affecting board practices. You will learn about board meetings, board member engagement, changes in how planning is being approached and more.

    Vaishali transitioned from a left-brain engineer to a right-brain intuitive by accident. Getting nowhere after consulting tens of psychics, she studied and learned the subtleties of intuition.     082: Are you in tune with the grant writing lifecycle? Sep 24, 2020

    My guest for this episode is Rachel Sacks. Rachel brings over a decade of experience in the public health and nonprofit health sector to her current consulting company: Leading Healthy Futures.

    Rachel's work with organizations and stakeholders across the healthcare field has provided her with a broad perspective on the challenges and opportunities the sector faces. Her prior work has included roles at the Illinois Chapter of the American Academy of Pediatrics, the Chicago Department of Public Health, and the Center for Jewish Genetics.

    She helps clients conceptualize, define, and actualize new ideas for grant opportunities and partnerships, and is adept at translating complex scientific, medical, and policy information into easily understandable language for lay audiences. Rachel is also a skilled facilitator who regularly leads state and local planning processes and has presented at national conferences.

    Rachel graduated Cum Laude from Northwestern University with a Bachelor of Arts in History and Science in Human Culture and holds a Master of Public Health from UIC.

    Today's guest is Paul Nazareth. Paul has been a leader in Canada's philanthropic sector with over 20 years' experience. Currently Vice President of Education & Development at the Canadian Association of Gift Planners, he's also the founder of Connectworking - a skill building program for people of purpose. He was most recently VP at the charity CanadaHelps, has been a philanthropic advisor with Scotia Wealth, and spent over a decade with charities like the University of Toronto.

    Paul is on the board of several charities, is Chair of the advisory committee at the Humber College postgraduate fundraising program, is on the advisory committee of the Carleton Masters in Nonprofit Leadership program, and he's a national faculty instructor with CAGP and more. Paul has been featured in the Globe & Mail and Forbes on the topic of personal branding and in his role with Connectworking, Paul continues to teach professional skill and strategy to social and for-profit leaders.

    My guest today is Lidia Varesco Racoma. Lidia is a brand strategist and marketing designer and has been working with nonprofits since she started her design career 20+ years ago. Through her company, Lidia Varesco Design, Lidia empowers nonprofits, associations, higher ed and entrepreneurs to make a change through strategic branding and creative marketing design.

    Since 2000, she has helped her clients get their message out and reach the right people. She blogs about branding and marketing and leads workshops for nonprofits and small businesses. Lidia is active in the local nonprofit community as a volunteer/member of Association Forum, as well as serving on the board of directors for the Association of Consultants to Nonprofits (ACN) as Director of Marketing and Communications.
