196: From Nothing to This! An Inspiring Story Feb 02, 2023
    Show notes

My guest today is Jessica R. Munoz. Jessica is a clinical emergency/trauma nurse practitioner, and she is the Founder & CEO of Hoʻōla Nā Pua Pua (HNP), which means "New life for our children", a nonprofit organization whose mission is the prevention of child sex trafficking and providing care for youth who have been exploited. Rooted on the "justice gene in her DNA", Jessica's passion to "forever shine the light" into the dark places and watch new life come forth shapes her vision and life's mission.

She has 16 years of healthcare experience, entrepreneurship, community advocacy, transformational systems change, and leadership. She has built multiple partnerships across diverse sectors, both public and private, to bring a unified response and resources to ending the exploitation of children through a public health and systems change lens.

Over the past 14 years, she has published articles and provided training and strategies on prevention, identification, intervention, and response for hundreds of healthcare professionals, service providers, law enforcement, and community leaders. She works closely with the judiciary, district attorneys, and state, federal, and local law enforcement to help shape a multi-disciplinary collaborative response to trafficked youth and young adults in Hawaii and beyond.

Since 2009, Jessica and her team have been driving the anti-trafficking movement in the Hawaiian Islands, the Pacific, and across the national landscape. Her passion to serve exploited children and her pursuit of a comprehensive understanding of their needs have fostered her role as a trainer and advisor in Cameroon, Africa, with Vital Voices Global Partnership. She has also provided training on trauma-informed survivor-centered care, medical services, and multidisciplinary building teams in Samoa, Cambodia, Africa, Guatemala, Mexico, Africa, and Thailand.

Jessica envisioned, developed, and opened Pearl Haven---Hawaii's first residential treatment campus for sexually exploited teenage girls. A model of care that has gained national attention and recognition.

Of note, she and her team worked with CBS and the executive producers of the TV show Hawaii Five-0 to bring awareness through their 2017 episode, which highlights the issue of child sex trafficking in Hawaii and the work being done by Jessica's organization. This episode had over 8.9 million viewers in the first viewing and multiple PSAs created by the cast to help spread awareness.

    188: A Story of 100 Women and Contagious Generosity Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

My guest for this episode is Wendy Steele. Wendy is the founder and CEO of Impact100, a global nonprofit organization dedicated to uniting and empowering women to create a transformational impact in their communities. Since launching Impact100 in 2001, Wendy has dedicated her life to encouraging women to see themselves as both activists and philanthropists, bringing them together in order to unite their efforts, support one another, and enrich their communities as a team. What began as a grassroots effort in Cincinnati has today collectively granted more than $105 million to worthy nonprofits across more than 60 local chapters and four countries. The importance of giving back with the intent to leave the world a little better than she found it was instilled in her from a young age, leading her to see that all of us have something important to give. Wendy believes that, in giving to others, we gain in incalculable ways, and we can encourage others to do the same.

Wendy's debut book, Invitation to Impact: Lighting the Path to Community Transformation, shares her personal journey building one of today's most powerful grassroots organizations and invites women to become part of the solution by impacting their very own communities. Part business book, part memoir, Invitation to Impact provides insights for catalyzing meaningful change by giving women a seat at the table and a chance to join the movement—or spark one within themselves.

In recognition of her work with Impact100, Wendy was selected by Forbes for the July 2021 50 over 50 Impact list recognizing women changing communities through social entrepreneurship, law, advocacy, and education. She was also featured as a guest speaker on TEDxBocaRaton in 2014 where she discussed what contagious generosity means and why we should all get involved. In 2020, Wendy was named a Distinguished Honoree of the Jones Prize in Philanthropy from the Institute of Private Investors, and she was also awarded the 2014 Jefferson Award for Public Service for her work with Impact100.

Wendy resides in Tampa Bay, Florida, and enjoys reading, writing, traveling, walking the beach, and spending time with her husband, Rick, her five adult children, and as well as her dog, Gracie.

Here's what to expect during the episode:

    • How does women's empowerment help the community?
    • Why do some donors stop giving?
    • What does contagious generosity mean?
    • How can you encourage people to give back to society?
