    Episode 258 - The Handmaiden Jan 16, 2017
    Show notes

A Korean woman in the 1930's becomes the new handmaiden of a Japanese heiress. But things are not as they seem. Throw in explicit sex, sumptuous production design and the masterful direction of Park Chan-Wook and you've got 'The Handmaiden'. Perhaps destined for a spot on Andrew's Best of 2016 list, this film has become a critical darling, but not quite broken through to American audiences yet. The director of 'Oldboy' and other violent films tackles a very different and sensual subject matter. The story has many twists and turns, all the while maintaining an elegant sense of detachment as it juggles a complex story involving many characters.

    Episode 257 - Fences Jan 13, 2017
    Show notes

August Wilson's posthumous screenplay is faithful to the monologue-driven staging of his own Pulitzer prize-winning masterwork. The story of an African-American family in 1950's-era Pittsburgh succeeds on many levels, due primarily to the acting and Wilson's words. Phil felt that the direction didn't bring the play into the cinema enough, while Andrew applauded it for maintaining the integrity of the original theatrical production. Viola Davis recently took home a Golden Globe for her portrayal of a woman who suffers because of her husband's indiscretions, but still carries on.

    Episode 256 - Silence Jan 08, 2017
    Show notes

Shh! No talking during the service! What's that? We're not in church? Somebody tell Marty Scorsese, because this film is one of the most reverent depiction of piety in all of cinema. The heroes of this brutal film are the priests, but you needn't be religious to be captivated by their spirit. Andrew and Phil both liked 'Silence' but Phil lamented that it could have been made with a more appropriate (read: less whitewashed) cast. At one point, Gael Garcia Bernal was attached for the Andrew Garfield role. The star of 'Hacksaw Ridge' performs admirably in this difficult role, but his overwhelming whiteness and unconvincing accent prevent a total immersion into the world of the film. However, the overall impact is strong and results in one of the most memorable movies of the year.

    Episode 255 - La La Land Jan 04, 2017
    Show notes

Some people just aren't charmed by dance numbers on the 405. Andrew could barely hide his disappointment with this film. He believes it is a pointless, mediocre attempt to revive the movie musical. Phil liked it, but it's hard to ignore the singing and dancing in this film are not up to par. Ryan Gosling and Emma Stone are charismatic movie stars, but they can't hold a candle to Gene Kelly or (God rest her soul) Debbie Reynolds. Every now and then, a film disappoints, except this particular film has gotten universally rave reviews. 'La La Land' will most certainly win the Golden Globe for Best Musical/Comedy. The question is will it maintain the momentum needed to take home Oscar gold?

    Episode 254 - Nocturnal Animals Dec 23, 2016
    Show notes

Amy Adams is an art gallery owner who receives a manuscript in the mail from her ex-husband. It's a book he's written and titled 'Nocturnal Animals', a term he used to describe her. The term has dual meaning, as it also refers to a group of West Texas scumbags who terrorize a family on the road at night. The woman in the book doesn't end up too well. Is this book a veiled threat from a man still heartbroken after a divorce? Tom Ford's second film as director is highly compelling, and features a dynamite cast. A highly unusual film that provoked an interesting discussion for Andrew and Phil on today's episode.

    Episode 253 - Rogue One: A Star Wars Story *Listener's Choice* Dec 20, 2016
    Show notes

Now and then on ITQ, a listener will guest on an episode about a new release. It doesn't happen often, but all one has to do is ask and we will oblige. On this show, returning champion, Clint joins Andrew and Phil to discuss the hotly anticipated winter release, 'Rogue One'. Some liked it more than others. Phil actually fell asleep for part of it. The funny thing is, the last time he fell asleep at the movies was for another film directed by Gareth Edwards, 'Godzilla'. But Andrew and Clint both found it exciting and fun - perhaps a little bland. Listen to the episode for a fun, rambling time.

    Episode 252 - Tell No One *Listener's Choice* Dec 16, 2016
    Show notes

A twisty, French thriller that seems to have influenced recent American films comes to In the Queue from frequent contributor, Aaron. Eight years after his wife's mysterious disappearance, a man finds himself drawn into a mystery that hints she may in fact be still alive. Featuring a jaw-dropping chase through high-speed traffic and many unpredictable plot developments, 'Tell No One' is a satisfying journey into a troubling world of intrigue. Andrew and Aaron both rave about the film, and Phil liked it as well, but there is some disagreement about the efficacy of the pacing. For a thriller, 'Tell No One' does take it's time in establishing the thrills.

Episode 251 - Manchester By The Sea Dec 14, 2016
    Show notes

In Kenneth Lonergan's New England-set drama, responsibility to one's family is everything. Men take care of their kids, and when tragedy strikes, a man must cope. Casey Affleck has won many an acting award this year for his towering performance as Lee Chandler, a janitor whose laconic demeanor masks a lot of pain. All the actors in 'Manchester By The Sea' are stellar, and they craft flesh and blood characters that will haunt you after the lights come up. It is a drama that has a dose of humor and ample heartbreak. We can all recognize the world of this film because it is drawn from life. One of the years best.

    Episode 249 - Moonlight Nov 29, 2016
    Show notes

One of the truly great films of 2016, Barry Jenkins' 'Moonlight' is the story of an African-American boy struggling with his identity in a tough neighborhood of Miami. The film has the feel of a rich, winding novel, more about color and emotions than external events. The central character, Chiron is tortured because of his painful home life and burgeoning sexuality. People come and go in his life over a period of about 15 years but the one person who keeps appearing is Chiron's friend, Kevin. Their dinner conversation at the end of the film is the culmination of a fascinating tale that transcends race, age or class. 'Moonlight' should be seen by everyone.
