    Episode 268 - Flight *Listener's Choice* Feb 27, 2017
    Show notes

Denzel Washington. 'Nuff said. He carries this film from beginning to end. He breathes life into 'Whip' Whitacre, a hard-living airline pilot and full-time douchebag. As the film begins, Whitacre snorts a toot of cocaine before heading out to fly a commercial aircraft. If you know anything about this movie, you know that early on, there is a serious problem with the aircraft. 'Whip' saves the day, but lands in hot water. Robert Zemeckis' directs with aplomb, and there are good turns by John Goodman, Don Cheadle, Kelly Reilly and Bruce Greenwood. But this is Denzel's show. In one of his best performances, (and in some ways a dry run for his work in 'Fences') he makes us understand how this man repeatedly makes the wrong choices, until it's too late.

    Episode 267 - Lion Feb 23, 2017
    Show notes

Dev Patel oozes charisma in his Oscar-nominated turn as Saroo, an Indian man living with adopted parents in Australia. Years earlier, he was separated from his parents, never seeing his mother and brother again. He one day decides he wants to find his home and reunite with his original family. They are probably pretty worried about him. 'Lion' is a good film, although Andrew is fonder of it than Phil is. The discussion ranges from how 'Weinstein Brothers' a film is this to the tactile cinematography (also Oscar-nominated) to the depiction of Saroo's decision to track down his family.

    Episode 266 - 13th Feb 20, 2017
    Show notes

Today, Andrew and Phil are joined by Eric, a new guest on ITQ who recommends Ava DuVernay's Oscar-nominated documentary about mass incarceration of African-Americans. The excellent film is available for streaming on Netflix and DuVernay could become the first black woman to win an Oscar for directing a film of any type. '13th' makes a convincing case that the massive imprisonment of black and brown people is not because they commit more crimes, but rather an extension of the siavery mentality. Illuminating interviews with Angela Davis, Newt Gingrich and others enforce the thesis of this topic.

    Episode 265 - 20th Century Women Feb 16, 2017
    Show notes

If there's anything we can take away about life in 1979 (the year before Andrew and Phil were born) it's that the music was kick-ass. Our hosts would like to lead off by saying it's possible to love Black Flag AND Talking Heads. Mike Mills may not be the bassist for R.E.M., but he certainly grasps what is a killer tune. Phil was dismayed that the most excellent soundtrack for 20th Century Women didn't quite up the game of the filmmaking (ala Kubrick, Tarantino, Wes Anderson, PT Anderson etc.) but this is certainly a writer's movie. Which did Mills come up with first: the characters or setting? Phil considers the film an extended reminiscence; but Andrew calls it a character study. Whoever is right, 20th Century Women is a must-see from 2016.

    Episode 264 - Andrew and Phil's Top Ten of 2016 Feb 07, 2017
    Show notes

The year has been over, but a few important releases were just seen. Now is the time to recap. In this special episode, our hosts each run down their favorite movies of 2016. There will be some surprises, for sure, but you know the quality of these films is going to be high. Looking for a suggestion of a film to see? Pick out one of these titles and you're guaranteed a fulfilling time at the movies. Don't think Andrew and Phil are only going to pick movies that just came out in the past few months. They're digging deep to bring you the very best. Each of them picked ten movies, but did not tell each other what they chose. Here's a hint - neither one picked 'La La Land' as their favorite of the year.

    Episode 263 - Toni Erdmann Feb 01, 2017
    Show notes

A sprawling, original screenplay by writer-director Maren Ade provides the backbone for this lively German farce. Career-driven Ines finds her professional life turned upside down by her practical-joking father. At first, his stunt to pretend to be a "life coach" seems to function as his irreverent attempt to spend more time with his daughter. But as the film proceeds down it's idiosyncratic path, deceptively wise dad's ruse seems less selfish, and more a desperate move to help his daughter cope in a ruthless business environment. Andrew felt the film took too long to build to a boil, but Phil was captivated throughout. Our two hosts conclude the episode ruminating who will win the Oscar for Best Foreign Film.

    Episode 262 - Paterson Jan 27, 2017
    Show notes

Jim Jarmusch is no stranger to low-key stories. His new film, 'Paterson' is a chronicle of one week in the life of a bus driving amateur poet in New Jersey. The acting is all around good, with Adam Driver embodying the main character in all his affable charm. Andrew saw the film as a beautiful tribute to life's small moments. Phil thought the film was precisely too small, and therefore not dramatic enough to stick in his memory. A film can delight in small moments and also feature a compelling plot, which this film did not deliver. Andrew challenged Phil to explain why he liked other slow-moving Jarmusch films, but not this one.

    Episode 261 - Elle Jan 25, 2017
    Show notes

Isabelle Huppert tackles another inscrutably twisted character in this stunner from Paul Verhoeven. Michele is the head of a video game company who is sexually assaulted in her home by a masked intruder. What follows is a game of cat and mouse that will leave you guessing. 'Elle' is also a study of a circle of friends and family, all of whom are flawed or damaged in some way. The whole ensemble of actors is stellar, but it is Huppert who rises above in her Golden Globe-winning performance that elevates this film to greatness. Andrew and Phil do their best to ascertain if the film is mere schadenfreude or if we can learn something about human nature from Huppert's confounding performance.

    Episode 260 - Moana Jan 20, 2017
    Show notes

This is a great Disney movie!! If anyone is debating whether or not to see this already-released film, know that seeing it would be the right choice! You've got great voice acting by Dwayne Johnson, Auli'i Cravalho and Jemaine Clement, to name a few. The animation is stellar. Andrew and Phil went off talking about how beautiful the water looks in this movie. Best of all is the refreshing Polynesian lifestyle that permeates the world of 'Moana'. It's a much-needed break from the day-to-day lives most of us lead. Will 'Moana' take home the Best Animated Film Oscar from 'Zootopia'?? Either way, they're both Disney movies, so John Lasseter don't care!

    Episode 259 - Hidden Figures Jan 18, 2017
    Show notes

Rare is the Hollywood film that appeals to the whole family. From grandparents to grandchildren, everyone will find something good in 'Hidden Figures'. The story is about a group of African-American women who work for NASA during the Space Race. The U.S. is in competition with Russia to put a man in orbit, and the most valuable contributors to the mathematics of it all are women treated like second-class citizens. They are true underdog heroes and their efforts make for an engaging story. Andrew and Phil hold hope for future PG-rated films as being as high caliber as this mainstream fare.
