    Episode 238 - The BFG Jul 15, 2016
    Show notes

Steven Spielberg collaborates with Disney and all our hopes are high. The source material is Roald Dahl and we know this is going to be good. But the outcome is less than great. 'The BFG' is faithful to the language of the book and several aspects of the special effects are cool, but Spielberg was never an expert humorist and the technical aspects are developed more than the actual story. A late scene that deals with the Queen of England seems like it's going to end the film, but then it keeps on going. Essentially an animated film, Andrew and Phil surmise Spielberg took on this project because it pushed the boundaries of movie technology.

    Episode 237 - Weiner Jul 13, 2016
    Show notes

The hottest documentary of the year so far, 'Weiner' is an entertaining and critically-praised account of a political trainwreck. New York congressman Anthony Weiner had a promising career, but he was forced to resign after the press got a hold of an image of his crotch that he Tweeted to a female fan. The scandal rocked Weiner's marriage to Huma Abedin, but she stayed with him. This intimate documentary follows the disgraced candidate as he runs for mayor of New York City, in an attempt to regain his lost political glory. Andrew and Phil both liked 'Weiner' and the two discuss how the film manipulates the candidate's story to make us feel certain attitudes to this flawed man.

    Episode 236 - Swiss Army Man Jul 08, 2016
    Show notes

In case you needed any assurance that maverick distribution company A24 is killing it with high quality, original films, along comes 'Swiss Army Man.' A dazzling comic adventure tale that is unlike anything you've ever seen, the film is the feature debut of 'DANIELS', a directing team previously responsible for music videos. Their new film moves with the energy and emotion of music, spinning a spectacular, surreal yarn centered around Hank (Paul Dano) who is shipwrecked on a deserted island. Washing up in the surf is a human corpse (Daniel Radcliffe), who becomes the best friend Hank has ever had. To tell more of the plot would be spoilage. One of the most lively and passionate episodes of In the Queue is the result of 'Swiss Army Man.'

    Episode 235 - Charlie Bartlett *Listener's Choice* Jul 05, 2016
    Show notes

The recent, untimely death of actor Anton Yelchin sent us into his back catalogue. The 2007 high school dramedy, 'Charlie Bartlet' was recommended to us by our special guest, Rankin. Yelchin plays the titular character, a charismatic teenager whose goal in life is to be liked by everyone. After getting expelled from private school, the affluent teen finds himself in a brand new public school where he has a long way to go to reach popularity. Yelchin is confident and charming in the role, and Robert Downey Jr. is entertaining as the befuddled principal. Today's discussion ranges from an appraisal of high school movie tropes to Yelchin's performance and the overall message of the film.

    Episode 234 - The Shallows Jun 30, 2016
    Show notes

Just when you thought it was safe to watch an underwater monster movie, 'The Shallows' reminds you that an intelligent, frightening film about a killer shark is hard to come by. Blake Lively plays a med student who comes to a secluded Latin American beach to do some surfing. What she finds in the water is more than she bargained for, and she'll have to use all of her survival skills to outwit a Great White that keeps circling her rocky perch in the titular shallows. Andrew and Phil both enjoy a good, one-woman against-the-elements movie, but this is not it. The screenplay itself is quite weak, and our two hosts have a fun time dismantling it for your listening pleasure. Cowabunga.

    Episode 233 - Stalag 17 *Listener's Choice* Jun 28, 2016
    Show notes

A cynic with a cigar was never as charismatic as William Holden. Winning an Oscar for his role as a POW who looks only after himself, Holden is the bright star at the center of 'Stalag 17'. Billy Wilder's WWII comedy comes to us from Kristy, a returning guest here on In the Queue. Andrew and Phil both feel the film relies too heavily on comic relief, instead of building actual tension, the potential for which there is in spades. Early in the film, Americans gets brutally gunned down by Nazis as they attempt to escape the camp. But it's not long until the relentless Brooklynite cut-ups Harry and Animal take over the plot for close to an hour. But then a stool pigeon is exposed, everyone at ITQ is glued to the screen, and 'Stalag 17' ends up as a near-classic.

    Episode 232 - Finding Dory Jun 23, 2016
    Show notes

This heartwarming tale from Pixar (their third in one year) follows blue tang fish Dory in her search to find her long-lost parents. The sequel to 2003's smash hit 'Finding Nemo', this animated film features many new characters and situations that keep the franchise moving forward, despite some moments that seem rehashed from the original. Andrew holds Pixar to a very high standard, and while he enjoyed the film, it's not one of his favorites. Phil brings up the controversy surrounding the film's supposed "gay characters", two women seen only for a moment, but who have made an indelible impression on some viewers.

    Episode 231 - The Emperor's New Groove *Listener's Choice* Jun 17, 2016
    Show notes

One of the wackiest Disney animated films of all time, 'The Emperor's New Groove' embodies many tropes. It is a buddy comedy, an unlikely friendship story and a tale of comeuppance. This 2000 film contains some of the most cynical and downright screwball humor of any film in the Disney canon. David Spade stars at Emperor Kuzco, ruler of a pseudo-Incan land who finds himself turned into a llama and expelled from his palace by the conniving spell-caster, Yzma. Llama Kuzco hooks up with a shepherd named Pacha and together they try restore the Emperor to his rightful place. Calvin, a new guest, joins Andrew and Phil for this episode, and the three discuss the troubled history behind the making of this film, as well as the joyous finished product.

    Episode 230 - Maggie's Plan Jun 15, 2016
    Show notes

Greta Gerwig stars as Maggie, a young woman in New York who wants to have a baby, but not deal with having a man in her life. She seems to have found the perfect sperm donor in Guy, a pickler bottler (phallic reference, anyone?) who is copacetic to have no involvement in Maggie's life. But she has been spending time with John (Ethan Hawke) a frustrated novelist in an unhappy marriage, and love begins to grow. Rebecca Miller's New York relationship comedy is unfortunately overshadowed by the work of the king of New York relationship comedies and suffers in comparison. 'Maggie's Plan' is not very funny and Andrew in particular hated watching this detached treatment of romantic entanglements. Phil wanted to like this film and found some of the performances to be quite good, but ultimately felt the story was too slight to be satisfying.

    Episode 229 - Inside Man *Listener's Choice* Jun 10, 2016
    Show notes

In one of the best heist films in recent memory, Denzel Washington leads a powerhouse ensemble cast under the direction of Spike Lee. A daring daylight bank robbery in Manhattan is the premise for 'Inside Man', but the plot is of equal importance to the acting and overall flavor of the City. Working from a script by Russell Gewirtz, Lee directs with flair and urgency, concocting a thriller that is light on it's feet and a lot of fun. Returning guest, Chris brings this film to In the Queue and with Andrew and Phil, the three of them debate the efficacy of Spike Lee's famous trademark camera move.
