Krampus (2015) feat. Bobby Torrez Dec 02, 2020

Show notes

We're kicking off the holiday season by hunkering down in a snow globe with YouTube star Bobby Torrez and a screening of Michael Dougherty's Krampus (2015).

The film has an all-star cast (Toni Collette! Adam Scott! Allison Tolman! David Koechner!), but doesn't manage to nail its balance of tones like Trick 'r Treat did. Thankfully the film has a great score (suck it Joe!) and a fantastically unnerving jack in the box named Der Klown, who Trace cannot stop jizzing over. Plus: Krampus as an LGBT icon, why the holidays are hard for queers, and lesbian-coded twins.

As we walk along the parade route, we'll discuss the oft-used white savior trope (Seth Cohen's mom really wants to save these black teens!), family secrets involving mixed race genealogy and the always welcome presence of Tony Todd.

Plus, lengthy shots of a snow cones, atrocious mid-'90s CGI, magic mirrors and the film's odd decision to double down on black pain. Oh, and why is this New Orleans school open on Mardi Gras?

Cruising (1980) feat. Andrew Scahill Nov 18, 2020

Show notes

Hold onto your hips and lips because for our 100th episode, we're going Cruising! Along for the *ahem* ride, is film professor Andrew Scahill, who guides us through an academic deep dive of the 1980 William Friedkin film, which has been one of our most requested titles since we started Horror Queers!

There's LOTS to talk about: the heavily protested production, the depiction of the gay community, the critique of the police, and the frank depiction of sex and community. Throw in the film's historical legacy and its reappraisal through a contemporary lens and there's plenty to sink our teeth into.

Plus: Pacino's look of gay panic, The Velvet Rage, and a Rebecca/Cruising porn parody! Don't blame us - you made us do this!

The Ruins (2008) feat. Dax Ebaben Nov 11, 2020

Show notes

Can four Americans on vacation in Mexico just disappear? We're here to find out as we discuss previous guest Carter Smith's 2008 pandemic creature feature The Ruins! Joining us is Bloody Disgusting's own Dax Ebaben!

Join us as we discuss the Stephen King-approved source material (aka one of the scariest novels of the 21st century) and how it translates to the screen in the Ben Stiller(!)-produced film that most critics compared unfavorably to Little Shop of Horrors (those critics are dumb).

Plus, sad handjobs, impromptu amputations, questionable German accents (sorry, Joe Anderson) and all the praise for Laura Ramsey's tragic performance.
