Terror Train (1980) feat. Homos on Haunted Hill Dec 30, 2020

Show notes

Happy New Year, everyone! We're hopping aboard a party train to ring in the new year with Roger Spottiswoode's Jamie Lee Curtis-starring slasher film Terror Train! Joining us for the bash are Chris Moore and Kevin Jones, the co-hosts of the Homos on Haunted Hill podcast!

Join us as we discuss the slasher go-to of pranks being the reason for someone killing a bunch of horny dumb-dumbs, read into the queer coding of Doc (Hart Bochner....again!) and Mo (Timothy Webber) and instigate the #JusticeForMitchy movement.

Plus: yearbooks in college? Another cross-dressing serial killer? Lots of magic with David Copperfield! And how about that 2008 would-be remake starring Thora Birch?

Oh, and if you'd like to read the interview with Derek MacKinnon (Kenny Hampson) that we reference in the episode, you can do so here.

The Cell (2000) Dec 23, 2020

Show notes

Happy holidays, everyone! We usually take this week off, but we had an extra episode in the Horror Queers archives that we recorded back in October for the Nightstream Film Festival, and we thought we’d release it as a little holiday treat for all of you. That treat comes in the form of a discussion of all things J. Lo in Tarsem Singh's The Cell!

Join us as we enter the mind of a killer and try to figure out whether the film really is "style over substance," defend Lopez against the haters and discuss the implications of giving a serial killer an empathetic backstory (especially one that involves potential queerness).

Plus, suspension masturbation, a Sindel cameo and another Lizzie McGuire connection! The Cell really is a better Nightmare on Elm Street sequel than, well, some of the Nightmare on Elm Street sequels.

Better Watch Out (2016) feat. Ariel Fisher Dec 16, 2020

Show notes

This week on the pod, we're wrapping up the holiday season with queer writer/director Chris Peckover's 2016 film Better Watch Out. We're joined by returning guest Ariel Fisher and...well let's just say that both the film and the discussion go places that you might not expect.

Big, flashing SPOILER WARNINGS for the film, as well as We Summon The Darkness.

Also: TRIGGER WARNING. We get into some heavy, uncomfortable, challenging topics, including rape, sexual assault, toxic masculinity and micro aggressions. Take care of yourself before listening.

It's not all doom and gloom, though: there's also a running gag about the Power Rangers movie.

Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993) feat. Lindsay Traves Dec 09, 2020

Show notes

Our Angel of Death awaits as we enter the dark streets of Gotham City to discuss the first (and only?) Batman slasher film Batman: Mask of the Phantasm! Joining us for the discussion is Batman expert (and all-around swell gal) Lindsay Traves!

We'll delve into the film's rushed production and failure at the box office. Joe compares the Bruce/Andrea romance to a similar one in On Her Majesty's Secret Service and Lindsay gives her reading on the romantic (or sexual?) relationship between Batman and the Joker.

We'll also highlight the importance of having an openly gay actor (Kevin Conroy) voice Batman, lament the inherent gatekeep-iness of comics and have a grand ol' time pitching the live-action casting of Andrea Beaumont.

Plus, Joker = horror (and plenty of Mark Hamill praise), balaclavas vs. bolas, Tia Carrere and Trace confesses one of his incredibly embarrassing high school horror stories. Oh, and masturbating to video game characters, because why not?
