Spiral (2020) Mar 09, 2022

Show notes

What's better than escaping from the city and moving out to the country? Well, if it's 1995 and you're an interracial gay couple, almost anything. That's the story at the heart of Kurtis David Harder's queer horror film Spiral, our 2020 entry in our "Underseen or Underrated?" theme.

Join us as we discuss this unabashedly queer horror film that manages to combine supernatural horror with very real horror to great effect. We'll discuss the hate crime that opens the film (and compare it to a similar opening in It Chapter Two) and we'll also discuss internalized homophobia, in a conversation that hits a close to home for Trace.

Plus, polyamory, leaving your doors unlocked in suburbia and PTSD. It's a heavier episode focused on on an admittedly heavy film, but never fear: our trademark humor is still here in spades!

Climax (2019) feat. Matt Cipolla Mar 02, 2022

Show notes

Put on your spandex, avoid the sangria and stay out of the electrical closet because this week's "underrated or underseen" entry is Gaspar Noé's Climax (2019).

Joining us on this (acid) trip is writer Matt Cipolla, who brings a wealth of Noé knowledge, as well as nihilist philosophy like E. M. Cioran's aphorisms.

We discuss Noé as a troll and why the film is (or isn't?) political and racist, as well as the unorthodox & collaborative production, child murder and more than a few drug stories.

Plus: why Trace will never watch this again, speculation about who lives and dies, and the comfort of rewatching the dance sequences.

Asssassination Nation (2018) feat. Dani Bethea Feb 23, 2022

Show notes

It's trigger warnings for alllllll the things this week as we discuss the lulz in Sam Levinson's (Euphoria) controversial, confrontational and very, very timely film Assassination Nation (2018)! Joining us for the discussion is writer Dani Bethea!

Join us as we discuss the film's approach to violence (where is the line between empowerment and re-traumatization?), its unusual (but intentional) lack of slurs, its commentary on empathy and that awesome single-take home invasion sequence that serves as the centerpiece of the film.

Plus, Chekhov's Daddy, fisting Oscar the Grouch, Joe's lesson on the film's opening sequence, Trace's comparisons to Detention and why "if you weren't The Nun, you weren't gettin' none!"

mother! (2017) feat. Ghouls Next Door Feb 16, 2022

Show notes

Grab your crystal heart and prepare for combustion. For 2017's "underseen or underrated" entry, we've recruited Gabe & Kat of Ghouls Next Door to discuss Darren Aronofsky's big budget flop: mother!

The Jennifer Lawrence movie is more endurance experience than film and features a messy mix of religious, environmental and creative allegories that definitely contributed to its F Cinemascore.

Needless to say, there's lot of unpack, including plenty of Biblical connections (why is Michelle Pfeiffer's Eve such a c*nt?!), conservation pleas (get off the damn sink!) and potential autobiographical ties (Aronofsky's treatment of J. Law, his former girlfriend and muse). It's a lot...just like this movie!

Boys in the Trees (2016) feat. Aaron Dries Feb 09, 2022

Show notes

Blast your '90s music and prepare to get vulnerable with your masculinity because we're talking Nicholas Verso's 2016 coming-of-age drama Boys in the Trees! Joining us for this discussion (one that Joe's been waiting two years for) is Aussieauthor Aaron Dries (Dirty Heads, House of Sighs)!

Join us as we discuss the film's handling of some admittedly sensitive subject matter (CW: sexual assault) before discussing the creative process that removed any explicit queer content from the film. Expect plenty of comparisons to Stand By Me, The NeverEnding Story, Bridge to Terabithia and E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial.

Plus: Whip-its/nangs, trading bullying stories (watch out for shaving cream!), toxic fire extinguisher snow and some lessons in Australian culture. Oh, and Joe and Aaron have a meet-cute!
