Poem read by Jessica at the end of the episode:

“Light A Candle” by Paul Alexander

And I will light a candle for you

To shatter all the darkness and bless the times we knew

Like a beacon in the night

The flame will burn bright and guide us on our way

Oh, today I light a candle for you

The seasons come and go, and I’m weary from the change

I keep moving on, you know it’s not the same

And when I’m walking all alone

Do you hear me call your name?

Do you hear me sing the songs we used to sing?

You filled my life with wonder, touched me with surprise

Always saw that something special deep within your eyes

And through the good times and the bad

    We carried on with pride

I hold on to the love and life we knew

    33. Your Guide to Boundaries This Holiday Season Dec 05, 2023
    Show notes

If the thought of everything you've got on your plate this holiday season - and all of the extended family time - has you fondly reflecting on the no-gathering pandemic holiday season of 2020... you're not alone! But a global pandemic can't be the only way to get some relief around the holidays. Instead, we're revisiting the ever-relevant topic of boundaries, with a holiday spin.

    Listen to learn more about:

    • What a Boundary Is (and is not)
    • Time and Energy Boundaries
    • Financial Boundaries
    • Behavior / Content Boundaries (looking at you your weird uncle who gets sloshed and says something totally inappropriate)
    • How and When to Set a Boundary
    • Why You Shouldn’t be a Jerk When you Set a Boundary (and why we all need to re-learn some civility after the last few years)
    • What to do When Your Boundaries are not Respected
    • The Surprising Person who is Most Likely to Kill Your Boundaries (spoiler alert… it’s you!)

Plus, Jess gets triggered when Andrea accidentally puts her on the spot; Andrea confesses that she struggles with the idea of doing things she doesn’t want to do… even when she really needs to compromise; and Andrea & Jessica discover that they REALLY don’t agree about Family Christmas Cards.

    32. NO-Cember: When to Say, "Yes" and When to Just Say, "NO" Nov 28, 2023
    Show notes

Welcome back to the Honest Women Podcast! As we bid farewell to No-vember, we're diving straight into No-Cember. Today, we're getting honest about the challenges of saying 'yes' and 'no,' especially as the holiday season approaches.

In today's episode, we get honest about:

    The No-Cember Trend:

    • Reflecting on the "No-vember" trend and extending it into December.
    • Exploring the challenges of deciding when to say "yes" and when to confidently say, "NO!"

    Barriers to Responding to Invitations:

    • The struggles of an extrovert: Balancing social commitments.
    • The struggles of an introvert: Identifying when to say, "YES!"
    • Overcoming the fear of disappointing others.

    Weighing the Impact:

    • Debating between attending an event you're not enthusiastic about versus declining and potentially upsetting someone.
    • Addressing the fear of backlash and setting boundaries.

    Holiday Magic vs. Realistic Choices:

    • Balancing the desire to make the holidays magical with the reality of limitations.
    • Navigating situations where you want to attend, but your partner does not.

    Navigating Multiple Invitations:

    • Social etiquette and strategies for handling multiple invitations on the same day.
    • Waiting for the date of an annual event and handling conflicting schedules.

    What to Prioritize:

    • Distinguishing between what you need to show up for versus what is optional.
    • Evaluating personal desires and available resources.

    The Art of Saying 'No':

    • Sharing personal frameworks for decision-making.
    • Advocating for honesty in declining invitations and the positive impact it can have.

    Handling Rejections:

    • Discussing the effectiveness of being open, honest, and vulnerable when declining.
    • Acknowledging the challenges of a simple "no" with little explanation.

As we navigate the holiday season and enter No-Cember, let's embrace the power of honest communication in setting boundaries. Remember, it's okay to prioritize your well-being and be intentional about the commitments you choose to take on.

    30. When Gratitude Feels Like Another "To-Do" Nov 14, 2023
    Show notes

Hello, Honest Women community! Welcome back to another episode of the Honest Women Podcast. Today, we're diving into a topic that resonates deeply this time of year. It's November, the month of gratitude, but what happens when finding gratitude feels like just another task on our never-ending to-do list?"

In today's episode, we get honest about:

    1. The unseen burden that often falls on women: There is a lack of balance within our homes, especially during the holiday season. As demands increase, many of us, particularly women, feel we barely keep our heads above water. The pressure to present Instagram-worthy homes and families adds another layer to the struggles. Today, we get honest about the challenges of finding gratitude amidst these expectations.
    2. Our blocks to gratitude: during this chaotic time, self-care, healthy eating, and even basic needs like sleep often take a back seat. We explore the factors that hinder our ability to be present and experience gratitude. Are past experiences, societal pressures, or personal exhaustion contributing to this block? We delve into the complex web of emotions and circumstances that might hold us back.
    3. Working to find gratitude in the every day: From dry shampoo to online grocery shopping and our beloved Pinterest meal planning boards, there's humor in the little things. We discuss the importance of recognizing and appreciating these small joys. Plus, the value of being grateful for yourself during this season.

As we navigate the holiday season, let's remember to be honest with ourselves about the struggles we face and find gratitude in the small, everyday moments. Thanks for joining us in this candid conversation. Don't forget to show yourself some appreciation. Until next time, stay true, stay honest, and take a moment to be grateful for the amazing person you are.

    29. When Your Partner Is Struggling with Addiction or Mental Health Nov 07, 2023
    Show notes

It can be incredibly hard to take care of yourself when your partner is struggling with addiction or their mental health. Today, we answer an email from a beloved listener, asking us how to do just that.

    We get honest about:

    1. How you might have gotten into this relationship in the first place
    2. What you CAN'T do when you're married to someone who is struggling with addiction or their mental health
    3. What you CAN do to take good care of yourself and others

We also discuss our love for 90s rap and try to make nicknames happen. Our low-key avoidance of this tender topic is quite hilarious, in our humble opinion.

All joking aside, if you have a loved one who is struggling with addiction, please check out all of the applicable family support groups:

    28. Revisiting Expectations Oct 31, 2023
    Show notes

We have a confession to make. Andrea and Jessica have fallen victim to the “do more, be better” message that we have openly pushed against since we launched the Honest Women podcast in May of this year. In today’s episode, we get honest about our own expectations and how we have been forced to re-evaluate them. Get ready for some raw, real, unfiltered self-disclosure.

In today's episode, we talk about our "zones":

    1. The things we want to accomplish that often make us look "impressive." Think spirit fingers and a little razzle dazzle!
    2. The things we HAVE to do but often don't LOVE to do. Think dishes/school emails/kids' clothing/meal planning/grocery shopping...did someone say, "invisible labor?!"
    3. The fun stuff! And often, things that go by the wayside when we are drowning in zone 2, and expecting too much of ourselves in zone 1. Think sleep, connection, exercise!

    We get honest about:

    1. How we got here, once again.
    2. How unrealistic expectations have negatively impacted us.
    3. Re-evaluating what our expectations should be in this "season" of our life.

    27. Hobbies! They're Not Just for Husbands Anymore! Oct 25, 2023
    Show notes

Believe it or not, the topic of hobbies - especially stereotypical "men's" hobbies - makes an outsized appearance in both individual and couples' counseling (I'm looking at you, golf!).

How is it possible that leisure activities can cause such turmoil in so many partnerships? Well, the conversation around hobbies often reflects bigger issues in our marriages, and can lead to bigger issues in our marriages, such as:

    • who "owns the time" in the partnership
    • mom guilt vs. dad guilt (aka, not a thing)
    • default parenting
    • internalized productivity culture

    If you've ever:

    • felt like you can't possibly do something, just for the fun of it, because there's so much to do and other people need so much from you
    • felt like even if you DID get time, you don't have "a thing" and wouldn't know where to start
    • felt like your partner thinks that their time is more valuable than yours
    • burned with resentment when your husband joins another sports league
    • felt like you've lost your sense of self
    • wondered if you might be a vampire, only allowed to have fun before the sun comes up or after the sun goes down (just me???)

    This episode is for you!

Please enjoy, share with a friend (and make a plan to start a hobby together! "Lunch" is an option!), and leave us a 5 star rating and review.

    26. You Asked, we Answered! Oct 18, 2023
    Show notes

What do you want to know about your therapist? Are there questions you would love to ask but don’t feel like you can? Today, as therapists, Andrea and Jessica give honest answers to questions that our listeners wish they could as their therapists.

Andrea and Jessica also discuss how therapists handle listening to people's problems all day, whether therapists silently judge their clients, and if therapists talk about their clients with their friends. They emphasize the importance of the therapeutic relationship and unconditional positive regard in therapy.

    Key Takeaways:

    1. Therapists may feel emotionally drained after listening to people's problems all day, but they genuinely care about their clients and want to help.
    2. Therapists are trained to provide unconditional positive regard and hold their clients in a non-judgmental space.
    3. It is essential for clients to feel comfortable with their therapist and to trust that their therapist likes and cares about them.
    4. Therapists are bound by confidentiality and ethical guidelines and do not discuss their clients' issues with others outside of professional consultations.
    5. Therapy is a safe space where clients can bring their most vulnerable and shameful experiences without fear of judgment.

    25. Living and Parenting in the Age of Mass Shootings Oct 11, 2023
    Show notes

There's never a good time to talk about mass shootings...

So now is as good a time as ever.

Join us as we talk about it's like to live and parent during a time in the U.S. where mass shootings are commonplace; normalize the many different ways that we deal with this reality; consider the impact that these discussions have on our relationships; and ask the very obvious question:

"If so many people think this is a problem, why the hell is this still happening?"
