    43. Let's Hear it for the Boy (Moms)! Feb 20, 2024
    Show notes

Raising a child is challenging, no matter their gender... but raising boys just hits different than raising girls! Today, we get honest about all things #boymom: the cultural narratives around raising as on, our own hopes and fears for our sons, and how the relationship we have with our sons is different than the one we have with our daughters.

    Listen to learn more about:

    • the cultural norm of the "wild boy"
    • a possible origin story for the #boymom trend
    • how we both felt about having sons
    • how we identify - as boy moms or girl moms
    • the cultural narrative about the relationship between boys & their moms
    • how we REALLY feel about becoming THE mother-in-law
    • our fears and hopes for our own boys
    • how our goals for our sons impact how we parent them today

Plus, Andrea cringes at her own (former) traditionalist stance on why she wanted a boy first; Jessica seems unsure about how many children Andrea has; and we both wade deep into how our relationships with our sons are shaped by our relationships with the other women that will be in their lives.

    42. Transform Your Marriage Today: 10 Tips You Can't Afford to Miss! Feb 13, 2024
    Show notes

As couples therapists, we've seen it all, and we know that love doesn't come with a manual. But hey, where's the fun in that, right? So today, we're sharing some lighthearted (slightly questionable) marriage tips peppered with a healthy dose of humor and a dash of honesty. Plus, we're throwing in some insights from our own experiences as wives because, let's be real, sometimes life teaches you more about love than any textbook ever could.

Listen to learn about Andrea and Jessica's top tips:

    • Stop attacking; stop defending.
    • Go to bed angry, yep, we said it!
    • Rewrite date night.
    • Be ok with them NEVER liking to do the dishes.
    • Acknowledge one another in passing.
    • Give what you want.
    • ASK for what you want; don't just assume.
    • Increase non-sexual touching...like, a lot!
    • Repair quickly.
    • Try not to fall out of love at the same time.

Yes, we know the irony here. The two of us giving tips when we are entirely against dishing out tips! We promise you this is not one of those episodes. Marriage is hard! In fact, we even did a couple episodes on the topic:

    41. The Complicated Relationship Between Mothers & Daughters Feb 06, 2024
    Show notes

All relationships are complicated… but perhaps none are more complicated than the relationship between mother and daughter. Today, we get honest about some of the factors that make the mother-daughter relationship so loaded… things we’ve learned both as therapists, and have experienced in our own lives.

    Listen as we discuss:

    • The messages we receive as women about having a daughter:
    • That we will either be best friends or have a lot of conflict with our daughters
    • That we are not complete unless we have a daughter
    • The ways that societal expectations for little boys and little girls are different
    • How trying to change the roles and expectations for women make parenting our daughters complicated
    • How our own experiences with female friendships and with our own mothers shape our relationships with our daughters
    • How our own insecurities show up in our relationships with our daughters
    • How we can sometimes try to correct things that we see in our daughters because we see them in ourselves, and how it can be really hard to separate what is ours from what is hers
    • The elephant in the room... how our relationships with our own mothers shapes our relationships with our daughters

Plus, Andrea channels her inner Freud; Jessica models receiving a compliment; and we both step into the confessional a record number of times as we discuss our raw thoughts and feelings about the complicated relationships we have with the relationship we have with having daughters (<< did you catch all of the layers here??).

    • You Asked, we Answered! (October 18, 2023) - another episode where we spent a lot of time... maybe the whole time...in the confessional, as we answered the questions you have about therapists.

    39. Is it Time to Break Up With Your Phone? Jan 23, 2024
    Show notes

We hate to say it, but one of the most significant relationships we have as modern women is the one we have with our phone. But while we have many good reasons for using them, we have to admit that our phone usage has an impact on our relationships and on our mental health. Today, we get honest about those impacts, and ask the practical question - short of building a time machine to the 1990s, is there anything we can do to improve things?

    Listen to learn more about:

    • how our phone usage harms our most important (and even very casual) relationships
    • a few of the ways our phones damage our mental and physical health
    • some practical suggestions to change your relationship with your phone

Plus, Jess ruins everything for everyone by making a plan (and thereby causing a blizzard which kept her kids at home which wrecked the plan); Andrea and Jessica wrestle with the word ironic (thanks, Alanis!); and we reveal how we discover Tik Tok trends (via MSNBC articles about 3 months later… tell me you’re a millennial without telling me you’re a millennial!)

    37. Exploring Mommy Wine Culture During Dry January Jan 09, 2024
    Show notes

There are some things that are so baked into our culture that they can feel scary to even talk about… but we wouldn’t be Honest Women if we weren’t bold enough to talk about those things. Today, we explore Mommy Wine Culture: where it came from, how it impacts us, and where it might not be serving us.

    Listen to learn more about:

    • How / Why / If Andrea & Jess do Dry January
    • Why shame makes it difficult to examine our drinking behavior
    • The origin of Mommy Wine Culture
    • Marketing of alcohol as an escape from the challenges of life
    • The history of using substances to deal with womens' distress (do NOT miss this!)
    • A few of the things that alcohol does *not* help us deal with

Plus, Jess gives an update on the dress she got stuck in; Andrea discovers that you *can* return alcohol to the liquor store if yor decide to become sober before you make special cocktails; and Jessica and Andrea nerd out about the history of substances being marketed to women instead of dealing with their real, actual problems. Were housewives in the 1950's really happy, or were they just f*ing high on valium? You'll have to listen to find out!

    35. Reframing Regret: How this Difficult Emotion Can Help You Grow Dec 19, 2023
    Show notes

It’s impossible to count the times that we’ve been told to live life with no regrets… but is that a realistic, or even worthy goal? Today we have an honest conversation about the rather taboo topic of regret: what it is, what to do if you feel it, and even wonder if it is possible that this rather uncomfortable experience can be beneficial.

    Listen to learn more about:

    • The difference between regrets of action and regrets of inaction
    • Why ruminating on regrets of action - like moral failings - is not serving you
    • The three regrets of inaction - boldness, foundation, and connection regrets
    • How regret can lead us to our values and help us to shape our life going forward
    • The false promise of "if only" regret thinking (hint: your life would not be perfect and painless right now "if only" you had done X instead of Y)
    • What to do RIGHT NOW if you are feeling regret

Plus, Andrea works through a really raw friendship regret; Jessica explores a time she regretted in her relationship with Andrea; and Jessica almost spits out her coffee when Andrea shares her not-so-evolved reaction to a relationship that ended poorly. NO REGRETS, right?
