Apocalypse Now? How to Stay Sane When Everything Feels Uncertain Jun 04, 2024
    Show notes

Humans have worried about the end of the world since… probably the beginning of the world. But lately? It seems like people are worried more than ever.

Today, we get honest about the existential anxiety that is plaguing our daily lives. Whether you think that humanity is going to hell in a hand basket, you fear that the world is literally going down in flames, or you wonder why everyone around you is so keyed up, this honest conversation is for you.

Listen as we get honest about:

    • How a sense of doom - about the end of the world, or the trajectory of humanity - is part of the zeitgeist of the last few years
    • How the fear of the end of the world is fueled by a sense of powerlessness and the constant exposure to micro stressors
    • The fact that this is not our first rodeo! "There have been numerous predictions about the end of the world, but none have proven true." (LOL)
    • How fear is a normal human response to uncertainty... and fear makes it hard to have rational thoughts
    • How focusing on what you can control, taking actions that align with your values, engaging with other humans in real life, and being intentional with your time will help you regain a sense of security and peace, no matter the stress in the world

Plus, Jessica simply cannot stop singing; Andrea blames Earth Day for her existential dread; and the fact that we recorded this episode a few weeks ago becomes abundantly clear because we are currently SWARMED by cicadas. #cicadapocalypse

HW Fave: Your Hard is Hard May 30, 2024
    Show notes

We hear it everyday in our offices: after a client shares the things they are struggling with, they inevitably say "But so many other people have it worse than I do... I should just suck it up and be more grateful."

    <cue the record scratch>

Today we get honest about the fact that this is NOT true! You can have the house and the partner and the kids and the van... and the things that are hard in your life STILL count.

We hope you enjoy listening to this OG episode of Honest Women - it's literally the first one we ever recorded, and it's still one of our favorites!

HW Fave: SUMMER IS COMING (and moms are scared!) May 28, 2024
    Show notes

Summer is here! Which means sunny, stress-free, lazy days for kids and… pretty much the exact opposite for Moms. Today Andrea and Jessica get honest about what summer is REALLY like for the women who are in charge of making it memorable.

    Listen in as we discuss:

    • Dealing with the frantic pace of May when we have no energy to care about it
    • The mental load of planning for summer and how we (both!) already failed at planning
    • The anxiety caused by dealing with constant schedule changes
    • Why we reject summer bucket lists
    • Specific challenges for working and stay-at-home moms
    • And why moms should be recognized as the heroes of summer

We hope you enjoy listening to this OG episode - it's one of our favorites! And let us know if you'd like us to host a new kind of summer camp for those of us who failed to make the summer signup deadline... rosé, sprinklers, and disappointment... of course we didn't actually meet the deadline for planning this this year. But maybe next year? 2025 goals?

    58. Why Are Millennials and Gen Z Less Happy? A Deep Dive into Generational Happiness May 14, 2024
    Show notes

Did you know that the United States is no longer one of the top 20 happiest countries. So, what's the deal? In today’s episode we have honest conversation, one generation at a time, as we work to identify the reasons for this decline.

Continue the conversation in our FACEBOOK GROUP! Join the HONEST WOMEN PODCAST COMMUNITY.

    Listen to Learn more about:

    • The United States has slipped out of the top 20 happiest countries list, raising questions about what's dampening the national mood.
    • Boomers seem to be in a golden age, while millennials and Gen Z are facing more challenges and feeling less content.
    • Changes in society, advancements in technology, and a lack of understanding between generations are all contributing to this happiness gap.
    • Boomers had the advantage of growing up in a time of economic prosperity and stability, which influenced their outlook on life.
    • Younger generations are dealing with different issues like financial instability and the overwhelming presence of technology in their lives.
    • To improve happiness levels, it's crucial to build empathy and understanding between the generations. Recognizing each other's experiences and challenges can go a long way in bridging the gap.
    • Each generation has its own set of unique challenges and experiences that shape their worldview and behavior.
    • Economic factors such as student loan debt and high housing prices have had a major impact on the happiness and well-being of Millennials and Gen Z.
    • The rise of the internet and social media has changed the way younger generations connect with each other and experience loneliness.
    • It's important to create spaces both online and offline where people can authentically connect and understand each other, helping to address generational differences and build a happier society.

    56. Good Enough is the New Perfect: Why Feeling Like a "Bad Mom" Doesn't Make You a Failure May 07, 2024
    Show notes

You might make a self-deprecating joke about riding the hot mess express, or saving for your kids’ future therapy, but the truth is? Behind the closed doors of the therapy room, so many women share that they fear they are a "bad mom," and there’s nothing funny about it.

Listen as we get honest about :

    • the fact that nearly every mom sometimes feels like a "bad mom" and fears that she is failing at motherhood.
    • how apps like BabyCenter, and internet mom groups, created a generation of "responsibilized" moms
    • how parenting information has separated moms from their intuition
    • the unrealistic, unconscious expectations that many of us have for ourselves or our children
    • how early motherhood experiences, including postpartum depression and anxiety, can contribute to the feeling of being a "bad mom"
    • Winnicott's "Good Enough Mother" (aka the one time psychology DIDN'T blame moms for absolutely everything)
    • why it is important to challenge the idea of being a bad mom and practice self-compassion. This is SO MUCH EASIER to do in community, so we'll be continuing the conversation in the facebook group, and we'd love you to meet us there!

Plus, Andrea sings the praises of a beloved pre-k teacher; Jessica reacts - strongly - to the idea of the "good enough" mother; and Andrea and Jessica discover that they were both bloggers in the early internet days (who knew?).

As we head towards Mother's Day, we want YOU, our beloved listener who is also a mother, to know this:

You are exactly the mom that your children need. So make all of the "bad mom" jokes that you want, but remember - you are more than good enough, just the way you are. Happy Mother's Day!

Like this episode? Check these out:

    • 44. Isn't this Supposed to be Fun? (February 27, 2024) - in case you don't enjoy the daily grind of motherhood, and that makes you feel like a bad mom (spoiler alert - you're not!)
    • 37. Exploring Mommy Wine Culture During Dry January (January 9, 2024) - talk about societal pressures! Also, I think we should all take a moment to reflect on the fact that 20% of women in the US in the 1950s were being prescribed valium up to 4x a DAY to deal with their daily difficulties, so... you're probably doing fine.
    • 22. So You Lost Your Shit... (September 20, 2023) - in case losing your shit makes you feel like you're a bad mom... at least you're in good company! This is never not going to be one of our favorite episodes.
