Harvey Brownstone Interviews Professor Stanley A. Goldman, Author, “Left to the Mercy of a Rude Stream” Feb 05, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Stanley A. Goldman, Professor of Law, Director, Center for the Study of Law and Genocide, Author, “Left to the Mercy of a Rude Stream: The Bargain That Broke Adolf Hitler and Saved my Mother”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Stanley A. Goldman, has written a book that moved me so deeply, that I simply had to invite him on our show. The book is entitled, “Left to the Mercy of a Rude Stream: The Bargain That Broke Adolf Hitler and Saved my Mother”.

Our guest tells the riveting and harrowing account of how his mother, Malka Repstein, a young Jewish wife and mother living in Poland during the Second World War, survived the unspeakably brutal murder by the Nazis of her husband and 2 young children, and spent 2 years in the horrific Lodz ghetto, before being transported to the Auschwitz death camp, where she and a group of 500 women were literally at the steps of the gas chambers, when they were miraculously saved and sent to the Krupp Munitions Factory in Berlin to work as slaves, and subjected to inhuman living and working conditions.

In April 1945, the women were transported from the factory to the notorious Ravensbruk concentration camp to be exterminated. Malka had no idea that her life would be saved by a bizarrely improbable and little known bargain struck on April 21, 1945, by a courageous German Jew with a Swedish passport, by the name of Norbert Masur, and the worst mass murderer of the 3rd Reich, Heinrich Himmler, head of the SS and Gestapo, directly responsible for the implementation of the unprecedented and most extensive genocide in history, carried out by the Nazi regime, and forever referred to as the Holocaust.

Himmler, who by that time realized only too well that the Germans were headed for humiliating defeat, was desperate to cultivate a positive relationship with the Allies in the hopes of saving his own skin. And so he secretly agreed to release 1,000 Jewish female prisoners from the Ravensbruk concentration camp and turn them over to the Red Cross for safe passage to Sweden. Malka eventually went to America, married Morris Goldman, and gave birth to our guest.

He’s a professor of law at Loyola Law School in Los Angeles, as well as a celebrated journalist and television news correspondent and legal analyst. He’s also the founding director of the Loyola Center for the Study of Law and Genocide.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Henry Jaglom, Renowned Writer & Director Feb 02, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Henry Jaglom, Renowned Writer & Director

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Henry Jaglom, is a renowned and highly respected writer, director and playwright, whose body of work reflects his life long dedication to truth, honesty and authenticity in his artistic expression.

He trained with Lee Strasberg at The Actor’s Studio in New York, where he acted, wrote and directed plays. He then made his way to Hollywood, first as an actor in movies including “Psych-Out”, “Drive, He Said”, and “The Last Movie”, and then as a filmmaker. He wrote and directed such classics as “A Safe Place”, “Sitting Ducks”, “Tracks”, “Can She Bake a Cherry Pie”, “Eating”, “Last Summer in the Hamptons”, “New Year’s Day”, “Hollywood Dreams”, “Deja Vu”, and my personal favourite, “Train to Zakopané”.

He’s worked with some amazing actors including Jack Nicholson, Lee Grant, Maximillian Schell, Dennis Hopper, Roddy McDowell, Vanessa Redgrave, Faye Dunaway, David Duchovny – and he made 3 movies with Orson Welles, with whom he formed a deep friendship. In fact, in 2014, a fascinating book by film historian Peter Biskind was released, entitled, “My Lunches with Orson”, based on a series of previously unreleased recordings, of private conversations between our guest and Orson Welles every week over lunch at the famous “Ma Maison” restaurant in Hollywood. The book provides the most riveting and revealing insight into the enigmatic, wickedly witty and restlessly intelligent person that Orson Welles really was.

Our guest is widely considered to be a cinematic genius and a true maverick of American cinema – so much so, that he’s the subject of a fascinating 1995 documentary entitled, “Who is Henry Jaglom?” Well, my friends, you’re about to find out.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Casey LaLonde, Grandson of Screen Legend, Joan Crawford Jan 29, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Casey LaLonde, Grandson of Screen Legend, Joan Crawford

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Casey LaLonde, is the grandson of one of the greatest cinematic legends of all time, Joan Crawford. In 1947, 7 years after adopting her children Christina and Christopher, Ms. Crawford adopted twin daughters, Cathy and Cindy.

Our guest is the son of Cathy Crawford LaLonde, who, sadly, passed away on January 10, 2020. Although our guest was only 5 years old when his superstar grandmother, whom he affectionately called “JoJo”, passed away, he has many fond memories of his time spent at her home in New York. And he’s dedicated a great deal of his time and energy in preserving, celebrating and honouring her incredible body of work and legacy.

Joan Crawford made 89 movies, including some of my all-time favourites: “Grand Hotel”, “The Women”, “A Woman’s Face”, “Humoresque”, “Flamingo Road”, “Sudden Fear”, “Autumn Leaves”, “Possessed”, “The Damned Don’t Cry”, “Whatever Happened to Baby Jane”, and of course, “Mildred Pearce”, for which she won an Academy Award. She also appeared in dozens of TV shows including “General Electric Theatre”, “Della”, “The Lucy Show” and “Night Gallery”.

Joan Crawford rose from a youth of dire poverty, and literally reinvented herself, first into a dancer in the roaring 20’s, then into a silent screen star, and then into a full-fledged screen goddess. She was known for her phenomenal work ethic and perfectionism, as well as her incredible devotion to her fans.

After her death in 1977, her eldest daughter Christina published a book entitled “Mommie Dearest”, claiming that Joan was physically and emotionally abusive to herself and her brother Christopher. The book, which was made into a movie starring Faye Dunaway, was hugely controversial, and was immediately denounced by many of Ms. Crawford’s friends and co-workers, as well as by her daughters Cathy and Cindy – although to be fair, some celebrities including Helen Hayes, June Allyson and director Vincent Sherman, while never witnessing any abuse, DID describe Ms. Crawford as an unusually strict parent. Whatever may be the case, the book and movie had the unfortunate effect of somewhat overshadowing and tarnishing Joan Crawford’s well-deserved place as one of the Golden Age of Hollywood’s most important and prolific leading ladies.

Her handprints and footprints are in the forecourt at Grauman’s Chinese Theatre in Hollywood. She has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. She was awarded the Cecil B. DeMille award at the 1970 Golden Globes. And the American Film Institute named her the 10th greatest female movie star of all time.

The efforts of our guest, to shine a light on Ms. Crawford’s talent and artistic legacy, are greatly appreciated by her legions of fans, including myself.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Barri Cohen, Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker, “UNLOVED - HURONIA’S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN” Jan 26, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Barri Cohen, Award-Winning Documentary Filmmaker, “UNLOVED - HURONIA’S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Barri Cohen, is an award-winning filmmaker, best known for documentaries focusing on health, mental health, environmental and social justice issues. Some of her best known works include her feature documentary entitled, “Toxic Trespass: Children’s Health & The Environment”, “Toxic Beauty” and “Girls Night Out”.

Her latest film adds to the recent revelations here in Canada, of brutal legacies of neglect, abuse, violence and the trauma inflicted on our most vulnerable citizens. We know about the tragic and horrendous plight of Indigenous children in residential schools. We’ve learned what’s happened to many children at the hands of Catholic priests. We’ve heard about the treatment of elderly people isolated in nursing homes.

And now, thanks to our guest, we’re learning about the shameful and horrific treatment of disabled, institutionalized children, in her multi-award winning documentary entitled, “UNLOVED - HURONIA’S FORGOTTEN CHILDREN”.

The movie takes us on an intensely personal journey of the filmmaker’s quest to uncover the mystery of what happened to her 2 long-deceased, intellectually disabled half-brothers, who were rarely talked about, after they were institutionalized in the 1950’s at a government run facility in Orillia, Ontario, first opened in 1876, and called the “Ontario Hospital School”. It was neither a hospital nor a school. In 1945, it was renamed the Huronia Regional Center, and it operated until it was finally closed in 2009, after having held captive, tens of thousands of vulnerable children and youth, who suffered dehumanizing treatment.

That institution forms part of the immense tragedy of Canada’s, and the 20th century’s, disastrous treatment of intellectually disabled children. In the film we meet a number of survivors who speak frankly about the physical, emotional and sexual abuse and trauma they endured, and the landmark class action lawsuit they brought against the Ontario government, which was finally settled in 2013. The film, written and directed by our guest, will be televised in Canada on the CBC network on Sunday January 29, and will then be available on CBC GEM.

Our guest was the co-chair and a founding member of the Hot Docs International Documentary Film Festival. She was the National Executive Chair of the Documentary Organization of Canada. And she’s the former editor and publisher, and currently a columnist, at Point of View Magazine. And if that weren’t enough, she’s currently studying psychoanalysis.

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Sara Karloff, is the only child of one of the greatest and most beloved cinematic legends of all time – the master of horror, Boris Karloff.

Although this brilliant British actor made 174 movies and demonstrated remarkable versatility, in films like “The Criminal Code”, “Scarface”, “The Public Defender”, “Five Star Final”, ”The Lost Patrol”, “The House of Rothschild”, and “The Body Snatcher”, he is most definitely best remembered for his iconic roles in such horror classics as “Frankenstein”, “Bride of Frankenstein”, “Son of Frankenstein”, “The Mummy”, “The Old Dark House”, “The Black Room”, “The Black Cat” and “The Raven”.

He appeared in many television shows, and starred in 3 TV series of his own: “Thriller”, “Colonel March” and “The Veil”. And who can ever forget his portrayal of the Grinch in the classic animated Christmas special, “How the Grinch Stole Christmas”, for which he won a Grammy Award.

And of course, his instantly recognizable voice inspired the 1962 hit song by Bobby Pickett, “The Monster Mash”. He was a charter member of the Screen Actor’s Guild, and he’s one of the very few stars to have been awarded TWO stars on the Hollywood Walk of Fame: one for his work in movies, and one for his work on television. Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Edward Miskie, Actor, Singer, Producer, Author, “Cancer, Musical Theatre and Other Chronic Illnesses”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Edward Miskie, is an award-winning actor, singer, writer and producer who’s appeared in dozens of musical theatre productions including “Ragtime”, “Mama Mia”, “Anything Goes”, “42nd Street”, “Into the Woods”, “Kiss Me Kate”, “Hairspray” and “White Christmas”.

On television and film, he can be seen in “Bite Size Hallowe’en”, “Shut Up Astoria”, “Wicked Little Town”, “Chambers”, “Optima”, “The Allies” and “Cancer Can Rock”.

But what compelled me to invite him on our show, is his remarkable book entitled, “Cancer, Musical Theatre and Other Chronic Illnesses”, which is a brutally honest, turbulent and sometimes hilarious account of his traumatic but thankfully triumphant experience as a 25-year old young musical theatre star, who was suddenly diagnosed with a rare form of non-Hodgkins lymphoma. The book tells the insightful, compelling, poignant, and ultimately life-affirming story of his 10-month journey back in 2012, navigating the terrifying and tempestuous world of cancer treatment. Originally published in 2017, a special edition was produced in 2022 to celebrate the 10-year anniversary of his victory over cancer.
