Harvey Brownstone Interviews Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society”

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Michael Dane, Author, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Michael Dane, has written a multiple award-winning and critically acclaimed memoir entitled, “HomoAmerican: The Secret Society”.

Our guest started out with a prestigious scholarship at the Julliard School of American Ballet in New York, then moved to the American Ballet Theatre, and was then recruited to the Iranian National Ballet in 1976. But when it became frightfully clear that the Shah of Iran was about to be overthrown, our guest fled the country in a harrowing escape over the Turkish mountains.

He then danced with the world famous “Ballets Trockadero de Monte Carlo”, performing in the most glamorous venues. He then reinvented himself as a singer-songwriter, moved to Paris, signed a recording contract with Aquarius Records, and recorded 3 albums. As a provocative and innovative performer in Europe and New York, he became something of a sensation, headlining at the most avant garde clubs including “Studio 54”, “The Grapevine” and “The Anvil”.

He then became an actor, appearing in movies like “Spike of Bensonhurst”, “A Certain Sacrifice”, “Hangmen” and “It Could Happen to You”, and on TV shows including “All My Children” and “Saturday Night Live”. And the things he’s had to do to make a living when he was BETWEEN jobs? Well, you’ll have to read the book to learn about that. What makes his book so special, is his ability to articulate, in the most exquisite way, the stark reality of life for most gay men, especially from my generation – the journey of growing up in isolation, and in ghettos created by stereotypes, forcing us to create false personas and identities in a world that insists that we wear a disguise in order to survive.

The book has won numerous awards, including THREE Royal Dragonfly Awards, the Independent Author Network Award, and the IndieReader Discovery Award. And the New York Public Library for the Performing Arts AND the Stonewall National Museum & Archives have added the book to their research collections. This is an introspective, insightful, brutally honest and occasionally shocking account of a turbulent, sometimes chaotic – but always fascinating – life lived on the edge.

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Paul Brogan, is a man who exemplifies the term “resilience”.

After coming out in the early 60’s at the age of 10, he suffered and overcame many harrowing obstacles, including severe asthma, bullying, sexual abuse, rape, depression, committal to a mental institution, gay conversion therapy, eating disorders, a suicide attempt and incarceration on 3 separate occasions. Despite those challenges, he’s lived a remarkably adventurous, productive, and even glamorous life.

He’s an accomplished pianist and stage performer. For a time he worked at CBS in Hollywood, and he met and befriended many celebrities including Katherine Hepburn, Elizabeth Taylor, and Eleanor Powell. He’s been a teacher, an award-winning blogger, a radio talk-show host, and for 5 years, he’s been hosting an award-winning TV interview show called “Capital Area Chats”. He provided collaborative assistance and research support for 2 best selling books, "Crowning Glory", the 1996 autobiography of celebrated Hollywood hairstylist, Sydney Guilaroff, and "Doris Day, The Untold Story of the Girl Next Door", the 2008 book by David Kaufman. His book, “The Concord Theatre and Concord’s Love Affair with the Movies”, became a best seller.

And now, he’s written a turbulent, compelling and sometimes shocking memoir entitled, “A Sprinkling of Stardust Over the Outhouse: Musings, Memories, Madness and Pillow Talk”.

    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Sharon Gless, Legendary Emmy & Golden Globe Award Winning Actress, Author, “Apparently There Were Complaints”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Sharon Gless, is a beloved, multiple Emmy and Golden Globe Award-winning actress who’s been dazzling audiences since she became the very last contract player at Universal Studios in 1972.

After distinguishing herself in a number of memorable roles on TV including Kathleen Faverty in Marcus Welby, Maggie Philbin in “Switch”, Sidney Enderman in “Centennial”, Penny Alston in “Turnabout”, and Jane Jeffries in “Housecalls”, she landed the iconic role of Christine Cagney in the groundbreaking TV series, “Cagney and Lacey”, which was the first TV drama with 2 female lead characters, for which she won 2 Emmy Awards and a Golden Globe Award for Best Leading Actress in a Drama Series. She went on to win another Golden Globe Award and 2 more Emmy nominations for her starring role in “The Trials of Rosie O’Neill”.

And then, for 5 glorious seasons, she became immortalized for exemplifying the warmth and loving acceptance of the ideal Mom in another groundbreaking TV show, “Queer as Folk”, which became the #1 show on the Showtime cable network, and forever changed the landscape of how the LGBTQ community was portrayed on television.

After playing Lynn Warner on “The State Within” and the evil Colleen Rose on “Nip/Tuck”, which earned her a 9th Emmy nomination, she gave us yet another Emmy nominated iconic performance, as the chain-smoking, hypochondriac mother from hell, Madeline Westen in “Burn Notice”, which ran for 7 seasons. She continues to deliver outstanding performances on TV in “The Gifted”, “Casualty”, and in the upcoming TV movie “Constance”, and in a feature film being released next year, “Fast Charlie”, co-starring Pierce Brosnan and the late James Caan. In addition to having a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, she’s been nominated for 23 prestigious acting awards, including 10 Emmy Award and 7 Golden Globe Award nominations.

And now, her best selling memoir entitled, “Apparently There Were Complaints”, which was released last year, is now coming out in paperback on November 29th. This is a deeply personal, brutally honest and highly relatable book that I simply COULD NOT put down.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Bruce Ferber, Writer, TV Producer & Author, “I Buried Paul” Nov 20, 2022
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Bruce Ferber Writer, TV Producer & Author, “I Buried Paul”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Bruce Ferber, back on our show, is one of the most gifted and interesting guests I’ve ever had the pleasure of interviewing.

He spent 2 decades as a HUGELY SUCCESSFUL television comedy writer and producer, on TV shows including Bosom Buddies, Growing Pains, Sabrina The Teenage Witch, Coach, and especially Home Improvement, where he served as Executive Producer and showrunner. He’s earned multiple Emmy and Golden Globe nominations, as well as People’s Choice, Kid’s Choice and Environmental Media Awards.

But several years ago, he switched gears, and discovered that writing books was an even more gratifying endeavour. When he last appeared on our show, we talked about his fascinating book entitled “The Way we Work: On the Job in Hollywood”, which is a collection of essays from award-winning screenwriters, directors, producers, and people behind the scenes, giving us an eye-opening look at what really goes on in the trenches of the film and TV industry. I said it then, and I’ll say it now: this is one of the most frank and astute books about the realities of show business that has ever been written.

But our guest’s true passion is writing fiction. His first 2 highly acclaimed, award-winning novels, entitled “Elevating Overman” and “Cascade Falls”, were – for me – about figuring out what really matters in life, living life to the fullest, and healing our pain.

His latest novel, entitled, “I Buried Paul”, is a touching and insightful story of a middle-aged musician searching for creative fulfilment, in the context of family, lifelong friends and the enduring power and appeal of the music of the greatest band in history, The Beatles. In his writing, our guest demonstrates a remarkable ability to convey wisdom and important life lessons in a profound, witty and heartfelt way.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Tom Moore, Celebrated Theatre, Television And Film Director, Author, “Grease: Tell Me More, Tell Me More” Nov 10, 2022
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Tom Moore, Celebrated Theatre, Television And Film Director, Author, “Grease: Tell Me More, Tell Me More”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Tom Moore, is a celebrated theatre, television and film director who is in large part responsible for one of the greatest Broadway shows in history – “Grease”.

He was the director of the original Broadway production, which ran for 8 years, from February 14, 1972 to April 13, 1980, making it the longest-running Broadway show at the time. And of course, the show inspired the blockbuster movie starring Olivia Newton-John and John Travolta – who actually appeared as “Doody” in one of the national tours.

This year, to commemorate the show’s 50th anniversary, a very special book has been released, edited by our guest, along with one of the show’s producers, Ken Waissman, and Adrienne Barbeau, who was the original “Rizzo”, and who appeared on our show last year. The book is entitled, “Grease: Tell Me More, Tell Me More: Stories From the Broadway Phenomenon That Started It All”.

It’s a fascinating and entertaining collection of reminiscences and stories, memorable moments, hilarious mishaps, and sentimental anecdotes, giving us the inside scoop about the show, told by the creative minds that made it happen, including stars like Barry Bostwick, John Travolta, Adrienne Barbeau, Treat Williams, Marilu Henner, Peter Gallagher, Adrian Zmed and many others who appeared on stage and who worked behind the scenes. The book is a must-read, not only for fans of the show, but for every theatre lover, because we get to share the collaborative experience of so many artists working on a labour of love, which became a momentous and beloved piece of music theatre history.

In addition to his monumental involvement in “Grease”, which earned him a Tony nomination for Best Director, our guest directed many other Broadway shows, including the nostalgic World War 2 musical, “Over Here”, starring 2 of the Andrews Sisters, “Once in a Lifetime”, “The Octette Bridge Club”, and “Moon Over Buffalo”, starring the one and only Carol Burnett.

He received a second Tony nomination for Best Director, for “Night, Mother”, and he also directed the movie, starring Sissy Spacek and Anne Bancroft. If that weren’t enough, he’s a highly respected three time Emmy-nominated television director, who’s directed many TV shows including “ER”, “Mad About You”, “LA Law”, “Gilmore Girls” and dozens more.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Gary Lynn Floyd, Singer/Songwriter Nov 08, 2022
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Gary Lynn Floyd, Singer/Songwriter

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Gary Lynn Floyd, is a singer-songwriter whose beautiful songs and rich, silky voice reach straight into your heart. He incorporates his Texas roots in gospel and jazz into a musical style that is a mix of pop and R & B, combining silky, soulful vocals with emotionally powerful lyrics.

He’s released 9 albums, including “Walk on Water”, “This Side of Goodbye”, and “Gospel of Zen”, which was nominated for three 2010 OutMusic Awards, including Album of the Year. His other albums include, “Unbound”, “Body and Soul”, “My 88 Keys, Volumes 1 and 2”, and his collection of greatest hits entitled “Then and Now: 10th Anniversary Edition”.

He also produced an album of piano compositions entitled, “Speechless”. There’s a strong spirituality in his lyrics. And through his songs and live performances, he’s become a catalyst for positive change, by conveying love, light and clarity through his music. In fact, the Global Women's Empowerment Network selected his song "Unbound" as its theme song.

Several months ago, our guest honoured me in a very special and profound way, by recording his latest single, entitled “I am Yours”, which was written by the brilliant songwriter, Harriet Schock, and inspired by my struggles after coming out to my parents at the age of 19 and being rejected by them. His soulful and textured voice was the perfect vessel to convey the universal message of that song. The public response to the release of the song created immense interest in the artist who sang it.
