    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Louis Gossett Jr., Legendary Actor, Author & Humanitarian

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Louis Gossett Jr., is one of our most beloved and respected actors, who’s been thrilling audiences with his iconic performances since he first conquered Broadway at the age of 17 in “Take a Giant Step”, followed by “The Desk Set”, “Golden Boy”, “The Zulu and the Zayda”, and “My Sweet Charlie”.

He also starred on Broadway in “A Raisin in the Sun”, and then made his film debut in the 1961 movie adaptation of the play. His unforgettable portrayal of “Fiddler” in the groundbreaking miniseries “Roots” earned him an Emmy Award for Outstanding lead actor. And of course, who can ever forget him as Sgt. Emil Foley in “An Officer and a Gentleman”, for which he won the 1983 Academy Award AND Golden Globe Award for Best Supporting Actor, making him the first Black actor to win in that category.

Besides his Emmy Award for Roots, he got 7 more Emmy Award nominations for his work in “The Sentry Collection Presents Ben Vereen: His Roots”, “Backstairs at the White House”, “Palmerstown, USA”, “A Gathering of Old Men”, “Touched By an Angel”, “Watchmen” and “Sadat”, for which he was also nominated for a Golden Globe Award. And he got another Golden Globe Award nomination for his performance in “The Josephine Baker Story”.

He's had 3 Daytime Emmy Award nominations, and won the award for Best Children’s Special, for “In His Father’s Shoes”. He’s been nominated 6 times for NAACP Image Awards and won twice. And in 1992, he was awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Very soon, we will all get to see him in his latest role, as “Mister” in the musical film version of “The Color Purple”.

In addition to his illustrious acting career, our guest is an accomplished writer, producer, director and musician – and perhaps most importantly, he’s a social activist, educator and humanitarian, dedicated to eliminating racism and fighting injustice wherever it exists, in all its forms.

In 2010 he released his riveting memoir entitled "An Actor and a Gentleman," chronicling not only the many triumphs of his monumental career, but also the heartbreaking and sometimes insurmountable obstacles he confronted and overcame as a working actor, and especially as a Black man in America.

In 2006, he founded The Eracism Foundation, which is a nonprofit organization dedicated to eradicating racism, fostering cultural diversity, historical enrichment, education and anti-violence initiatives.

His collaborations with composer Andrew Lloyd Webber on the phenomenally successful and beloved shows, “Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat”, “Jesus Christ Superstar” and “Evita”, brought him worldwide acclaim, as one of the greatest and most innovative lyricists of the modern age.

He went on to co-write “Blondel” with Stephen Oliver, and “Chess”, with Benny Anderson and Bjorn Ulvaeus from ABBA. With Sir Elton John, he wrote “The Lion King”, “Aida”, and “The Road to El Dorado”.

He collaborated with Alan Menken on “Aladdin”, “King David”, and the theatrical production AND live action re-make of “Beauty and the Beast”, which is the highest-grossing live action musical of all time.

He co-wrote a musical called “Heathcliff”, based on Emily Bronte’s “Wuthering Heights”, which produced a wonderful album featuring Sir Cliff Richard and the late Olivia Newton-John.

And with composer Stuart Brayson, he co-wrote the musical production, “From Here to Eternity”, based on the 1953 James Jones novel. This man’s list of accomplishments is nothing short of jaw-dropping. His shows have broken box office records in the West End, on Broadway, and around the world.

Many of his songs have become global #1 hits, including “Jesus Christ Superstar”, “I Don’t Know How to Love Him”, “Don’t Cry for me Argentina”, “I Know Him So Well”, “Someday Out of the Blue” – and he even wrote the lyrics to my favourite song from a James Bond movie, “All Time High”, from “Octopussy”, recorded by Rita Coolidge.

And speaking of #1 hits, he’s won THREE Academy Awards and THREE Golden Globe Awards for his songs “A Whole New World” from “Aladdin”, “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” from “The Lion King”, and “You Must Love Me”, from the 1996 movie, “Evita”. About Harvey's guest:

If you’re a fan of our show, you’ll know that one of our most popular features is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, in which we pay tribute to legendary stars who are no longer with us. Today, we’re honouring one of the most beloved and iconic female recording artists and performers in the history of country music: Lynn Anderson.

She recorded 52 albums and 72 singles, 50 of which were top 40 hits,18 reached the Top-10, and 12 captured the No. 1 spot. She was known for songs like “You’re My Man”, “How Can I Unlove You”, “Keep Me in Mind”, “What a Man My Man is” - and of course, her phenomenal worldwide crossover smash hit in 1970, “Rose Garden”. That song made her an international superstar, and a trailblazer.

In fact, she was the first female country artist to have a #1 record worldwide, she was the first female country performer to appear on The Tonight Show, and she was the first female country performer to headline at Madison Square Garden. Her multi-platinum “Rose Garden” album was the highest grossing album by a female recording artist for 27 years until Shania Twain broke that record in 1997.

Lynn Anderson won a Grammy Award, 2 Academy of Country Music Awards, an American Music Award, 3 Billboard Magazine Awards, a Country Music Association Award, and a People’s Choice Award. She was also named Artist of the Decade by Record World, and in 2019 she was inducted into the Western Music Association Hall of Fame AND the North American Country Music Association Hall of Fame. She’s such a legend, that she’s even had a ROSE named after her by the American Rose Society.

Today’s guest, Michael Dempsey, started out as president of Lynn Anderson’s official fan club at the age of 18. He then became her accountant, then her booking agent for over 10 years, and finally, he was her manager for the last 12 years of her life, until she passed away unexpectedly from a heart attack in 2015 at the age of 67. But most of all, he was Ms. Anderson’s very dear friend and closest confidant.

Today’s special guest, Bill Mumy, is an actor, musician and writer, who’s been entertaining the world since he was 5 years old.

In fact, he was by far the most successful, recognizable and popular child star in the 60’s and 70’s. He appeared in dozens of TV shows including “The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet”, “Bewitched”, “The Twilight Zone”, “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”, “The Fugitive”, and many more.

In fact – and this is really jaw-dropping – this man worked with more legendary superstars by the time he hit puberty, than most A-list actors ever do in their entire lives. He worked with everyone from Red Skelton, Loretta Young, Franchot Tone, June Allyson, to Bob Hope, Lucille Ball, Judy Garland, Gene Kelly, Jackie Gleason – and yes, even Brigitte Bardot.

And get this: in a highly publicized interview, Jimmy Stewart said that our guest was the ONLY child actor he’d EVER worked with who was worth a damn. What a compliment!

As an adult, he’s appeared in many movies like “Papillon”, “Sunshine”, “The Twilight Zone movie”, “Double Trouble”, “Hard to Hold”, and the 1st “Captain America” feature film. And on TV, he’s appeared in “The Rockford Files”, “Star Trek: Deep Space 9”, “The Adventures of Superboy”, ”Matlock”, “Diagnosis Murder”, and he played “Lennier” for 5 seasons on “Babylon 5”.

And of course, EVERY “Lost in Space” fan was OVERJOYED to see him appear as “the real Dr. Smith” in the 2018 Netflix reboot of “Lost in Space”.

Throughout his life, he’s been a highly accomplished and popular musician, both as a solo artist AND as a member of several bands, including “Redwood”, “The Generators”, “Action Skulls” and “Barnes & Barnes”, whose song, “Fish Heads” became a worldwide hit. He’s released over a dozen albums. And he got an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Achievement in Music Direction and Composition.

Besides being an actor and musician, he’s had a prolific voiceover career, and he narrated over 50 episodes of A & E Biography. He was even the voice of Farmers Insurance for 11 years. He’s created and written numerous comic books, screenplays and novels. And for 4 years, he produced, wrote and hosted his own weekly radio show.

And now, FINALLY, he’s released his highly anticipated memoir entitled, “Danger, Will Robinson: The Full Mumy: A Memoir”, which gives us a very insightful, honest and entertaining look not only at his multi-faceted career, but more importantly, we get to know him as a son, grandson, husband, father, grandfather and human being.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Tony Orlando, Superstar Recording Artist and Entertainer, Pt. 2 Mar 22, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts a second in-depth interview with Tony Orlando, Superstar Recording Artist and Entertainer

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s special guest, Louise Sorel, is a multi-award winning and beloved actress who’s been dazzling audiences for over 6 decades.

Over the past 2 ½ years, we’ve had close to 300 guests on our show, and ALL of them have been an absolute pleasure to meet, and to interview. But NO ONE has generated the intense emotional response, and overwhelming outpouring of love, that Tony Orlando created when he first appeared on our show a little while ago.

Tony and I both believe that something magical happened during that interview, because what you were witnessing, was the realization, by a legendary artist, possibly for the first time, of the very significant impact his career has had within the entertainment industry, and for his fans. You were also witnessing the creation - in real time - of a deep and powerful friendship – a bonding of two hearts.

Both he and I were INUNDATED, not only with thousands of comments from fans expressing just how much that interview meant to them – but with an equal number of requests that we invite him back on our show to continue that very special conversation.

In fact, a number of devoted Tony Orlando fans have sent me several pages of questions they would like me to ask him. And I’m INCREDIBLY GRATEFUL that this BEAUTIFUL human being has agreed to, once again, take the time out of his very busy concert schedule, to appear on our show.

And so, by popular demand, I am THRILLED and VERY HONOURED to welcome back to our show, my very dear friend, the SUPER FABULOUS Tony Orlando.
