Today’s guest, Joel Thurm, is a show business veteran whose name you may not know, but whose work you have most definitely seen and loved.

For over 40 years, he was one of the most sought-after, powerful and respected casting directors in Hollywood. Starting in the early 70’s, as a casting director at CBS, then casting TV shows for superstar producer Aaron Spelling, then becoming Senior Vice President of Talent and Casting at NBC for 10 years, and also serving as Vice President of Television Talent at Paramount Studios, our guest helped create entertainment that has brought countless hours of joy to millions of people around the world.

On the big screen, he was responsible for casting 3 mega-hit movies: “Grease”, “The Rocky Horror Picture Show” and “Airplane”. And in the world of television, he cast dozens of hugely popular TV series including “Taxi”, “Fantasy Island”, “The Bob Newhart Show”, “Starsky & Hutch”, “Charlie’s Angels”, “Cheers”, “Miami Vice”, “The Golden Girls”, “Seinfeld”, “L.A. And my favourite of all his TV movies is “An Early Frost”, starring Gena Rowlands and Ben Gazzara, which was the first movie about AIDS, winning 4 Emmy awards.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells Jul 04, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Singing Legend Peggy Lee’s Granddaughter, Holly Foster Wells

    About Harvey's guest:

One of the most popular features of our show is our “Gone But Not Forgotten” series, celebrating the careers and legacies of the greatest stars who are no longer with us.

Today’s guest, Holly Foster Wells, is descended from show business royalty. She’s the granddaughter of one of the most popular and beloved music artists of all time: the fabulous Peggy Lee, whose contributions to the world of popular music and jazz were monumental.

Over her 7-decade career, she recorded over 1100 songs and released over 50 albums, with over a hundred top 100 hit singles, including “Somebody Else is Taking My Place”, “Why Don’t You Do Right”, “Golden Earings”, “Riders in the Sky”, “Is That All There Is”, “Lover”, and of course, everybody’s favourite, “Fever”, for which SHE came up with that distinctive arrangement, AND she wrote new lyrics.

As a matter of fact, Peggy Lee was an extraordinary songwriter, who wrote or co-wrote over 270 songs, including her hits “Little Fool”, “What More Can a Woman Do”, “I Don’t Know Enough About You”, “It’s a Good Day”, and “Manana”. For the Disney movie “Lady and the Tramp”, she co-wrote ALL of the original songs, and she supplied the singing and speaking voices of 4 characters. She also wrote songs for many other movies, including “Anatomy of a Murder”, “The Jazz Singer”, “The Rawhide Years”, “Johnny Guitar”, “Tom Thumb”, “The Heart is a Lonely Hunter”, “The Russians are Coming, The Russians are Coming”, “Walk, Don’t Run”, and many more. She appeared in 10 movies including “Stage Door Canteen”, “The Powers Girl”, “Jazz Ball”, “Mr. Music”, “The Jazz Singer”, and my personal favourite, “Pete Kelly’s Blues”, for which she received an Academy Award nomination for Best Supporting Actress, and the Audience Award for Most Promising Female Personality of 1955.

Ms Lee received 13 Grammy Award nominations including 1 win, plus a Lifetime Achievement Grammy Award. She was the first female recipient of 2 awards from the Songwriters Guild of America: the Aggie Award, for her composing skills, and the President’s Award, for her support of young, emerging songwriters. In 1990 she won the ASCAP Pied Piper Award, and 2 years later she was inducted into the Songwriters’ Hall of Fame. She received 2 honorary doctorates, a Star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and in 2020 the ASCAP Foundation established the Annual Peggy Lee Songwriter Award.

Peggy Lee was a creative powerhouse, who directed her life and career on her own terms. But for her millions of fans, it’s all about her quietly captivating voice, that continues to resonate with audiences of all ages.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Phyllis Taylor, Life Coach, Mediator, Motivational Speaker, Author, “The Prison Lady: True Stories and Life Lessons From Both Sides of the Bars” Jun 30, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Phyllis Taylor, Life Coach, Mediator, Motivational Speaker, Author, “The Prison Lady: True Stories and Life Lessons From Both Sides of the Bars”

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Phyllis Taylor, is a remarkable woman who reinvented herself in a most innovative and unique way, following her retirement from a 30-year career as a paralegal, technical writer and training specialist at a major law firm.

After attending one of Oprah Winfrey’s public speaking engagements, she decided to become a volunteer in prisons, where, for the past decade, she has worked with countless male and female inmates to develop their self esteem, anger management, problem solving skills, positive thinking, and a variety of life skills and coping mechanisms to help them in the rehabilitative process.

Her unique combination of interpersonal skills, compassion, common sense and a huge heart, made her an immensely popular and sought-after personality within the jail system, and she was even awarded “Volunteer of the Year” at one of Canada’s largest women’s prisons.

Her experiences in the jails, and the many insights she learned not only about the correctional system, but from the prisoners she worked with, are the subject of her fascinating book entitled, “The Prison Lady: True Stories and Life Lessons From Both Sides of the Bars”.

This is an entertaining, moving and inspirational book full of empathy and profound perceptions about an almost totally neglected and forgotten segment of society. Her book resonated with me on multiple levels, not only because of my 26 year career as a family and criminal court judge, but because this woman has articulated so beautifully, the key to what it means to live a meaningful and purposeful life.

In addition to her work in prisons and as a writer, she’s a certified life coach, mediator and motivational speaker. But in my opinion, she’s much, much more than that. She’s a HEALER.

Harvey Brownstone Interviews Polly Gibbons, Renowned Jazz Singer / Songwriter Jun 20, 2023
    Show notes

Harvey Brownstone conducts an in-depth interview with Polly Gibbons, Renowned Jazz Singer / Songwriter

    About Harvey's guest:

Today’s guest, Polly Gibbons, is an internationally renowned singer from England who’s rich, powerful, soulful voice delivers a unique jazz fusion that incorporates her R & B, gospel, jazz, funk and blues influences.

She’s been twice-nominated as "Best Jazz Vocalist" by the BBC and Jazz FM, and the London Sunday Times described her jazz vocals as “vintage R&B with shades of Aretha Franklin”. With her raw, smouldering voice that’s full of heat, she conquered the London jazz scene at the age of 17.

And since then, she’s become a regular at the legendary jazz club, Ronnie Scott’s in London. She’s performed at Royal Albert Hall, opening for George Benson and Gladys Knight, and in 2018 she had a residency at New York's legendary Birdland Jazz Club. She’s performed on tour across the USA, Europe and Asia, from Java Jazz in Indonesia to the Montreal Jazz Festival and the Pittsburgh Jazz Festival.

In 2014, renowned producer George Klabin signed her to his record label, Resonance Records in Los Angeles, where she’s recorded 3 highly acclaimed albums: “Many Faces of Love”, “Is it Me?”, and “All I Can Do”. On June 30, she’ll be releasing her 9th studio album entitled, “As It Is”, containing 10 original songs composed by our guest, who not only produced the album – she accompanied herself at the piano, supported by a great team of musicians. The songs on the album feature heartfelt stories of personal struggle and resilience, with magnificent vocals, always characterized by this brilliant singer’s wit and grace.

In describing this woman’s voice, we need go no further than Peter Quinn of Jazzwise Magazine, who proclaimed her “a truly exceptional, once-in-a-generation talent, possessing a voice of such sizzling intensity and raw emotion, that you could fry an egg on it.”
