    Show notes

It’s easy to provide answers to your employees when asked. We all like feeling needed and many of us have a hard time telling people to go fend for themselves. But if you strike the right balance, you’ll end up with capable employees who never feel like you’re the gatekeeper to the information they seek.

Ep 123: Balancing empathy with command skills. Jan 21, 2019
    Show notes

Have you ever walked into a chaotic environment and seen someone who seems to be unaffected by the chaos. He or she just seems to know what’s going on and their confidence and ability to control the room has a calming effect. You want to ask THAT person your question, even if they aren’t a subject matter expert. This is what command skills look like in action. But as we continue to place higher value on leadership soft skills like empathy and compassion, we tend to get leaders who have a tougher time with command skills. If you over-index on empathy, do you find it harder to display command skills? Or do you strike the right balance?

Only about a third of employees worldwide say they’re “fulfilled” by their work. But what does it mean to be fulfilled at work? If you’ve never been fulfilled by your job how would you know? As a leader, do you get to spend your time doing the things that fulfill you? Do you work to make sure your employees are doing the things that fulfill them?

Ep 121: Investing in relationships even when we don't have much in common with someone. Jan 07, 2019
    Show notes

We find comfort in our commonalities. Our education, our upbringing, the type of music we like, even our religion or skin color. All of them are subtle signals that another person has walked a path similar to ours. Those commonalities are often catalysts to conversations which become the beginnings of fantastic interpersonal relationships. Yep, it’s easy to make friends with your coworkers if you have things in common with them. Much more difficult when there’s no jumping off point. But those who take the time and make the effort to create relationships with others—even when there’s seemingly not much in common—tend to be more well-liked and move farther in their careers.
