163: No competition contracts with Defense Logistics Agency (YouTube Live) Mar 15, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode, I share one extremely helpful tool for conducting market research, the Federal Procurement Data System (FPDS), which is a database of government contracts. By searching for contracts related to your industry or product, you can gain valuable insights into which agencies are buying what, how much they are spending, and who the top vendors are.

To use FPDS effectively, it's important to understand the various codes and classifications used in the system. PSC codes, for example, are used to categorize products and services, and can help you identify potential markets within your industry. By sorting contracts by PSC code, you can get a sense of which products or services are in high demand and which areas may be oversaturated with competition.

Another useful classification in FPDS is NAICS codes, which are used to classify businesses by industry. By searching for contracts related to your industry's NAICS code, you can see which agencies are most likely to be interested in your product or service and who your main competitors are.

By understanding the data available in FPDS and using other research strategies, you can identify the most promising markets and position your business for success. Tune in to this episode to learn how.

160: Winning two subcontracts in 3 months with Angela Chamberlain | AlchemyGov Student Interview Feb 15, 2023
    Show notes

In this episode, we have Angela Chamberlain, founder of Kana Consulting. She was born in Manila and came to America when she was 6. Angela went to University in DC as a Business major and Division 1 athlete for Field Hockey. She worked in Finance / M&A in the corporate world for many years. While living in California she became a personal trainer and continued when moving to North Carolina.

How did she start her government contracting journey? She heard Eric on the Truck N Hustle podcast when she was trying to go into dispatching. She continued to listen to the podcast and then was introduced to government contracting.

In March 2022 she made $250 by bringing a sources sought to a potential client that was not ready to commit but paid for the information she gathered. The month right after, she started her consulting company. She continued learning and in May 2022, she attended a school event and met a couple that had a small business. Her husband then pushed her to tell them what she did and that was how she got her first client.

Angela continued learning and finding people who she can help and so one of her biggest wins came August 2022 where she received two awards as a subcontractor, the biggest projects for her client.

Tune in to this episode to learn more about Angela Chamberlain.

159: Buy a small business versus start one from scratch with Shane Prosser Feb 08, 2023
    Show notes

Shane Prosser is a US Army veteran and cofounder of FalconTek, an SDVOSB GovCon services firm, and GovBrew, a GovCon focused media firm.

After his time in the Army, Shane worked as part of the corporate development team at Computer Sciences Corporation (CSC), focusing on m&a for the publicly traded company. Shane and his older brother Chad Prosser acquired a small professional services business in the public sector. Since they acquired it, the firm has grown from 20 personnel to 225 personnel supporting government clients. Additionally, in 2020 they started a GovCon media company, GovBrew, that is focused on providing value to the GovCon community and empowering readers with engaging content that will keep them informed and entertained.

What I love about today's guest is he took his M&A knowledge to acquire a small business with only 20 personnel. Then he added his federal procurement skills to grow that business supporting government clients.

In previous episodes we discuss this strategy of buying an existing business that has some past performance and then growing that business using federal contracts as the primary vehicle. With the impending wealth transfer baby boomers set to pass $68 trillion to their children, over the next decade, an estimated $30 trillion in wealth will be exchanged from the hands of Baby Boomers to younger generations. This great wealth transfer will not only be a significant shift in our society but have far-reaching implications for business and society.

This will allow more diverse founders and disadvantaged small business owners and entrepreneurs to acquire businesses, grow and scale them.

I hope you pay attention to this one of a kind episode as our next Giant, Shane Prosser shares what he has learned over the last 7 years in the business.
