    Gen X, This is Why.

Gen X, This is Why is a podcast that re-examines the sometimes bizarre and often scarring media from our shared childhood. Jennie and Amye, sisters and sometimes mortal enemies, are your hosts. Our first stop is Walnut Grove as we take a fresh look at our favorite frontier family (as if we can name another), the Ingalls. There is some seriously weird sh*t in this show that answers a lot of questions…

    Show notes

In this episode we relive the trauma of everyone's favorite witch, Ms. Peel, who derails Mary's plans for a successful teaching career in a super weird town. Rev Alden reclaims his spot as public enemy number one, Charles saves the day, and there's an epic fight over the ten commandments. We fight about Jennie always being late and Amye's weird fear of grass. The green monster from Venture also makes a surprise return, and Amye would like everyone to know she is not attracted to minors.

Amye PLAYED herself and is forced to recap 1983's War Games with Jennie, who loves this movie and has 85 index cards to accompany the episode. Matthew Broderick guides us through the dangers of AI, complete with the bald dude from Top Gun, Dabney "Daphne" Coleman, and a father who butters his corn like a bad *ss. We discuss being scarred for life by The Ring, Amye's complete lack of knowledge around computers, and Jennie allows Amye to discuss JFK.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep12 Here Come the Brides May 03, 2021
    Show notes

It's wedding season in Walnut Grove, mostly because a new father/son duo has arrived in town. Ms. Beadle falls hard for Mr. Simms, while Nellie uncharacteristically falls for his soft-hearted shoeless son. When Nellie and the Johnny Johnson wanna-be run away to elope, Nels and Harriet grab the shotgun and race to stop the wedding. We hear way too much about Amye's favorite meal, relive the glory days of Viewmasters, and remember when Jennie wore braces for like fifteen years

Time Capsule: The Last Blockbuster Apr 29, 2021
    Show notes

Join us as we rewind to the glory days of video rental in our coverage of Netflix's 2020 Documentary: The Last Blockbuster. The story centers around the "Blockbuster Mom," Sandi, and her dedication to the lone surviving Blockbuster in Bend, Oregon. We meet a supporting cast of D-list celebrities, all of whom Jennie dislikes, and are mostly men. They reminisce about the sounds and smells of local Blockbusters, while telling the story of the video chain's slow death. Amye relives the trauma of splitting her pants on her very first day of work, Jennie remembers taking apart old computers, and Amye's annoying dog makes an appearance.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep11 Meet Me at the Fair Apr 26, 2021
    Show notes

Once again we are in the Upside Down where Mary is hot and all the boys love her. This time it's a broke-down, smooth-talking balloonist who wears a cape and is much too old to even be filming these scenes. Also in a bizarre turn of events, Amye is low energy. Finally, we have a big fight over who's responsible for this mess...per usual.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep10 The Fighter Apr 19, 2021
    Show notes

When professional boxer, Joe Kagan, shows up in Walnut Grove, everyone wants a piece of the $50 purse for lasting three rounds with the prize fighter. Everyone, except Charles. Nellie manages to bully half the town into taking the bet-including her own father, and after a self-inflicted wound sidelines Garvey, Charles is forced into the ring-why? We aren’t sure. Amye hates boxing and wishes Rocky movies didn’t have “the fighting parts,” Jennie refuses to do an index card on Nels, and we disagree over what Amye thinks is a terrible ending.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep09 The High Cost of Being Right Apr 12, 2021
    Show notes

When a fire burns up Jonathan Garvey’s crop, he throws a HUGE temper tantrum in which he walks out on his family (which explains why his son grew up to become Ram in Heathers.) We work on solving three mysteries: Why does everyone drink coffee at night? Where the heck is Laura? And, does Michael Landon hire bad actors to make himself look better? We also get all meta and have a fight about a fight.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep08 The Aftermath Apr 05, 2021
    Show notes

When a (super hot) Jesse James and his outlaw brother show up in Walnut Grove, the town must decide whether or not to turn them in. Charles takes a different approach and rents Mary to them for 10 cents a day, while Garvey earns the nickname "The Fixer." Amye recalls her annoying obsession with Young Guns II, we debate the true meaning of a "ride or die," and Jennie relives her trauma of Scooby Doo.

April Fool's Day (Fake) Episode: Little House on the Prairie - S2 Ep17 Troublemaker Apr 01, 2021
    Show notes

BONUS EPISODE: Because we missed Carl's Jr and Edwards so much, we went back and covered an episode that we skipped from Season 2!
Doc Baker has a nephew, and spoiler alert: he’s trouble. Laura and Carl’s Jr sign up for a fishing tournament right before he plunges a knife in her back, Mary is studying for another test, and Carrie has trouble with basic counting. We relive some trauma around school fights, have a lengthy aside about video games, and we were thrilled to see Ride or Die on our screens again with his hooch jug. Jennie swears A LOT in this episode so get ready for that.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep07 To Run and Hide Mar 29, 2021
    Show notes

Doc Baker finally realizes what we've known all along- medicine just isn't his forte. When he loses a patient, he decides to buy the farm...literally. We find out what Harriet does in her spare time, Laura has apparently left town, and we meet Stanley- Amye's new favorite rando. Jennie doesn't understand farming nor the birthing process, and Amye once again insults those of Italian descent with her accent.
