    Gen X, This is Why.

Gen X, This is Why is a podcast that re-examines the sometimes bizarre and often scarring media from our shared childhood. Jennie and Amye, sisters and sometimes mortal enemies, are your hosts. Our first stop is Walnut Grove as we take a fresh look at our favorite frontier family (as if we can name another), the Ingalls. There is some seriously weird sh*t in this show that answers a lot of questions…

    Show notes

The Ingalls, Garveys, and Olesons return to a broken down Walnut Grove and get to work rebuilding the town. Nels is still feeling the aftereffects of his city life and rages on Harriet, Charles may be getting hotter, and Doc Baker loses yet another patient in his care. Jennie gives us the world’s worst index card, Amye saw a whale (finally), and we demand justice for Hanson who totally deserved better in the end.

Little House on the Prairie S5 Ep02 As Long as We're Together Part 2 Jul 05, 2021
    Show notes

Charles is forced to attend a birthday party after the beating of his life, "Albert becomes Albert the Bastard," and Caroline and Mary play puppetmaster. Amye can't control her crying, Jennie's air conditioner makes another appearance, and we're ashamed to admit-we make some jokes at Mary's expense because we are horrible people.

Little House on the Prairie S5 Ep01 As Long as We're Together Part 1 Jun 28, 2021
    Show notes

This episode is a disaster, as Jennie's background noise is ratcheted up to ten and Amye is sick and sniffling through the whole thing. Also a disaster is the Ingalls' new living quarters. Charles and Caroline get a job because of Caroline's amazing biscuits, Charles angrily waits tables, and Laura is in hell. Jennie threatens to punch Amye, and Amye-clearly under the influence of cold medicine-feels empathy for older sibs everywhere.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep22 I'll Be Waving as You Drive Away Part 2 Jun 21, 2021
    Show notes

In the second part of “Mary Goes Blind,” we meet Adam, a sassy, straight-talking teacher who shows Mary some tough love and then inappropriate love as they begin a student/teacher romance. As Mary navigates the world of the blind, Walnut Grove continues to fall apart without its star pupil. In the end, the Ingalls family decides to pack up the team and follow Mary and Adam to Winoka. Jennie is fresh off of Happy Hour and has an index card four minutes in, and Mary is definitely in rehab-which Jennie immediately recognized.

    One-year Anniversary Episode! Jun 17, 2021
    Show notes

It's our one-year anniversary episode and we are answering your questions! Of course we fight over who came up with the idea for the podcast, Jennie admits her default stance in life is: annoyed, Amye cries about Young Guns 2 again and we ponder which shows we would like to cover next. Thank you so much to everyone who submitted questions!

It’s the Mary goes blind episode! After visiting a Doc Baker-ish eye doctor who lies to her and tells her she’ll be fine, the Ingalls are shocked to discover Mary is destined for blindness after a childhood bout with scarlet fever. Charles does all of the emotional heavy lifting in this episode, Laura finds another rando, and Caroline dishes out some real tough love. Amye is super emotional re-watching this as a parent, and Jennie is strongly considering renting some ad space in the local newspaper.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep20 A Most Precious Gift Jun 07, 2021
    Show notes

Caroline has the world’s fastest pregnancy with baby Grace and deals with some residual trauma over the death of Charles Jr, Laura and Andy Garvey build a much safer clubhouse than we did in 1988, and Mary shines as the class nerd-taking over for Ms. Beadle on maternity leave. Amye was definitely a sociopath as a teen, we discuss the idea of gender and identity, and Jennie admits she missed Amye (sort of). And in a shocking turn of events, Jennie lost her index cards.

Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep18 The Inheritance May 31, 2021
    Show notes

The Ingalls fall victim to a fast talking lawyer who definitely rips them off in the end. Carrie earns her own sound effect, Harriet continues to be awful, and we HATE Garvey. Also- we both agree the Ingalls are the exact type of people who should have money, which is why they never will. We relive our own clubhouse experience, and announce a very special episode for our one year episode!

A young woman, Anna, struggles to find a home for her baby so she invents Friendster and starts sending messages in bottles to Walnut Groves’ number one investigator, Laura. Willie may or may not have fathered a child, Laura has baby fever, and Doc Baker is all in on a one child policy. Amye gives fake news about JFK, we finally found the right actor to play Pa in a reboot, and Jennie does everything she can to avoid babies.

    Little House on the Prairie S4 Ep16 I Remember, I Remember May 17, 2021
    Show notes

Amye is very excited to see the beginning of Charles and Caroline’s epic love story, only...the casting of a young Charles has her quite upset. In this flashback episode, we learn how the two fell in love despite Boss Hogg’s best efforts. We learn Charles has the greatest big brother ever and Caroline’s mother can also bake the sh*t out of a pie. Amye rants about old timey teaching methods, and Jennie struggles to understand love.
